Diverticulitis and mental health

I have just returning home after visiting my brother who was released from hospital with a sever diverticulitis attack. He was mentally o.k. when I left, just a little down. Had a phone call last night that he was missing. A neighbour said he was dropped off by taxi wearing just an incontinence pad and shirt. Neighbour said he saw him handing over large amount of money to taxi driver. Just had another call to say carers can't get in. Has anyone had a similar experience. I'm 5 hours away and have to use public transport. Any advice welcome.

I would be calling the police. When my Dad went missing, they were brilliant. Maybe he has a urinary infection and this has triggered his behaviour but you obviously need to get professional help as soon as possible. The police would probably get him to hospital for a check up when they found him.

Have you or anybody else managed to speak to him on the phone? If not it would be reasonable to ask the police to break in. Horrible situation to have to cope with when you’re so far away. An infection of some sort is a likely cause of his confusion.

I would be speaking to the Police and asking for a welfare check.
You could also perhaps ask if the neighbour knows which Taxi company they saw - handing over a large amount of money is also concerning!

Definitely speak to the police and ask for a welfare check. My mother was taken ill a couple of months ago and as it would take us a minimum three hours to get to her I asked for a welfare check,The police were brilliant as were the emergency services.

My dear brother hung himself last night. Why didn't the taxi driver alert someone. Apart from his state he had a catheter in situ.
Thank you for responding.

That's terrible news, what a shock. Why on earth was your brother sent home from hospital inappropriately dressed and with a catheter in? Heads should roll for this negligence. I am so sorry and my thoughts are with you thanks

Oh heavens I am so so sorry ....

I agree with Curlywhirly though, was he discharged from hospital or had he self- discharged - there is a negligence issue there it seems??

What dreadful news Barmcake such a sad situation. ?

Just to add I have had severe diverticulitis and the pain is just dreadful, this could have added to causing his state of mind to be in turmoil.

Please accept my condolences.

So sorry for this tragic outcome.
My son has mental health issues and once or twice phoned from hospital after excess pills, not o.d. tentatives. It's so awful to be far away, I am in France.
I send you my sincere condoleances, be strong.

You are so sweet and kind. I don't want to talk to anyone but sharing with complete strangers has given me some comfort. He was terrified of going back to the hospital. He said the nurses were not caring and he was never washed etc. They had arranged carers to come in but he just wanted to be alone. Every single one of us has tragedy in our life. In fact, life is tragedy itself. I am so grateful to you for taking the time to reply. Bless you.
