Do you think you know when you are going to die?
WORD ASSOCIATION - 9th May 2026
Hello 👋
Here is the new thread!
Thank you to regular and irregular posters all.
Especially those such as Silverling and Charleygirl who have provided so much advise and support. (There are lots of other lovely posters, but too many to list).
As well as advice, there is also much wisdom and kindness.
I will link to the first and second threads below.
Wherever you are on your replacement journey, you are most welcome to join us here
And it worked! How odd!
Morning all,day 2 after another Xray think I am being sent home.
Uncomforable first night lovely sleep last night, getting about under my own steam slowly but free range now.
Thankyou for asking FC, hope your ankle is not causing lots of problems
Good to see on the list today again.
Thank you, it’s really good to hear from you. If I remember correctly, I went home on day 3 too.
They’ll make sure you can use your crutches and what have you.
I read what you said about being better on your own, and I tend to agree, you’ll be able to concentrate on yourself.
Be prepared to be very tired
See you soon x
Thanks Fanny am dropping off at odd moments , I am now going to get myself up washed and dressed for breakfast we are allowed on clothes so putting on trackie bottoms.
Had a lovely sleep last night
Hope the ankle is holding up today x
Morning downtoearth probably too late but you might find a skirt or dress much easier than trousers.
Fanny sorry about your ankle, hope it gets sorted out soon. Are you using sticks? They might help.
SL have my joggers on, physio has said there are changes being made for recovery etc not stringent as before will be careful but not as worried about movement as before.
Have used grabbers and implements and managed ok
Glad all going ok downtoearth. Yes about rules, surgeons do differ. I didnt want to wear the stockings so checked and it was ok. Had to self inject fir 4 weeks of course but dudnt have to wirry about getting stickings on and off as was moving around.
I didn’t have socks or injections.
I only knew if the injections because of on here.
I’m going to start a thread about my leg difference I think because I feel so clueless about it
Is that still as bad as it was Fanny? One year on, mine seems to have settled down.
Fanny I have replied to the other thread but if anybody else on here has unequal leg lengths you need a shoe build up.
Downtoearth you have done so well. Please do not forget when at home the hoover should really stay dormant for around 6 weeks. It would be easier if you have an upright.
You will not even see the dust collecting elsewhere and I would be inclined to leave it. You have had major surgery and you will feel very tired. Those are my excuses for doing little!
Thankyou charley I was on an elective surgical ward for all types of elective surgery not a specialised orthopaedic ward as lovely as the nurses where I think their handling techniques where a off, have been manhandled or so it felt to an Xray trolley HcA pulling my leg up wondered why I hollered, and another pulling my leg up to get in a car, then wondered Why I hollered loudly both pushing my leg when clearly painful.
Am home now after 5and half hour wait for pharmacy to sort my meds as asprin is contraindicated for my meds for the anticlotting, I now have 28 days of injections .
I am tired tearful and uncomfortable.
I believe we are pushed out too quickly from operations to free up beds.
I will donate hoover to any visitors, and sleep as much as I can.
Welcome home downtoearth, have an early night hope you get some sleep, if not I recommend phenerghan over the counter sleepers. Tomorrow is another day. Don’t expect too much too fast you will be fine. Keep in touch.
I will thanks SL
Hello everyone.
Sending you a gentle hug Downtoearth
Welcome home, I’m sorry that you had such a rubbish day yesterday
Thankyou fanny a gentle hug is what I need
I’m pleased to hear you are home downtoearth, but I do agree that we are probably discharged too soon after surgery.
It’s one thing to feel we are getting on ok in hospital, but another thing altogether when we are home, especially like you having to cope alone.
Yes, we all know they need the beds. Heaven knows there are enough people waiting for their operations, but I still feel three (or in some cases two) days is too soon. It is major surgery after all.
Having said that of course it’s great to be back in our own bed, and things do improve over the days and weeks.
Are you having any physiotherapy! I was scheduled for one day a week for four weeks but she discharged me after three as she said I was doing well and could continue with the exercises at home.
At the time I did feel that it was too soon to be sent home as I live alone , but on reflection it was probably best as you have to move around more and no bed is as good as your own !
Ignore the dust and as you say get visitors to push the vacuum cleaner around. Just remember to drink plenty of fluids and avoid the dreaded constipation that comes with taking codeine. I did sleep every afternoon as it does take it out of you but so good not to be in pain. Every day gets better.
I am glad to b,e home, not taking opiates managing with paracetamol, back to my own diet with fruit and nuts hope will deal with any constipation.
Yes susie you do need to be more active to look after yourself physio after 4 weeks at cottage hospital, not missing arthritis pain I have a horizontal cut on my bum cheek as well with clips that are sore feel like its got easier to move around today, although first thing this morning was a challenge
Every day is a step closer to recovery. As for steps I have just returned from a wonderful white cliffs walk of 22,000 steps.
My hip is fine. Shame about the foot but that’s another story,
downtoearth you have done so well and it must be great being at home. Please just do what you want when you want. Rest and sleep but keep dehydrated.
As to discharge I was last on the list on a Wednesday night, felt unwell and was sick on Thursday and discharged at 10am on Friday after a 5 minute walk along a corridor.
This was in a private hospital but under the nhs.
It all seemed very fast but the Friday I was discharged was good Friday and they closed the whole hospital over Easter so everyone was discharged. Bizarre!
Thankyou charley.
You can see the nurses are so pushed for time with many patients to look after,I actually felt I wanted to help them by doing as much as I could for myself and make their day easier.
SL was catheterised and bag not emptied bed needed to have all theatre bits removed, but theatre staff annoyed nursing staff bringing me back during meal time and just dumped bed inside ward ,the drip I was supposed to have wasnt connected.
When physio got me out of bed room spun fortunately didnt faint, but was touch and go.
But guess different departments dont always cordinate and clash at times.
But staff where lovely at all times.
Getting up to do some breakfast and wash my hair over the sink it looks a total mess.
Forgot to say SL your mileage is impressive, doubt I would have managed that pre op have now got smart watch so can register steps.
Fanny hope your foot is behaving better today
Paying for it today downtoearth. Can hardly get myself to the bathroom.
