I have had this problem and asked the pharmacist at Boots (about 3 years ago) and she highly recommended a product called Cryotag. It was not cheap (around £25, I think) but it has been a miracle for me (also, living alone). It is hard to describe, but basically there is a cotton-swab type applicator which you load (moisten) from a canister and dot it onto the skin tag. I think it is liquid nitrogen like used in a doctor's office. I applied it two or three times and the skin tag dried up and fell off. I still have it and use it when another one pops up, so cost effective in the long run.
BTW - I will add that I read somewhere that the skin tags can be caused by repeat irritation to the skin, i.e. a thin chain I wore around my neck all the time. I stopped wearing it and the problem pretty much stopped.
