I am 70, and I’ve tried various probiotics, but would like some personal recommendations from my Gransnet peers please..
Those are way, way out of my price range 🤦‍♀️

How much??!!😱

I’ve been taking Nature’s Best Acidophilus Extra 10. They are about £18 for 60 capsules - take 1 per day.

Symprove, liquid probiotic. Expensive but very well reviewed and sorted my gut

Blossoming Tue 13-Jun-23 10:34:25

I use Biokult Everyday to keep my digestive system functioning properly. I take 1 at lunchtime and 1 at dinner time and that works for me.

What about things like Kefir and Kimchi? I honestly don't know and am wondering if they're any good

ExDancer Tue 13-Jun-23 11:35:55

I'm watching this with interest, hoping someone will suggest something to ease my long lasting wind (gas) problems. My GP just says I'm to try not to 'take in air when I eat and drink.
(no - I don't eat with my mouth open).
The poor man doing my last UltraSound said he couldn't get a clear picture because I had so much gas in my gut.

I drink a small glass of kefir daily together with a sachet of Bimuno probiotic - recommended by MM.

Haven’t had any digestive problems at all so far and in good health. (Im 68 🙄🥱😳)

make kefir, look at youtube videos about kefir and how to make it. I have kefir every day and my making it is down to a fine art, I spend 5 minutes every three days and all it costs me is whole milk, I use organic whole milk and make 2 litres a week.

Sour after first fermentation then the magic happens at second fermentation and the acidity disappears. In my fridge right now, I have a `cauliflower` kefir mother in a small amount of milk, sleeping. Yesterday morning I strained the first fermentation and the container holding second fermentation is in the fridge too. The mother looks like a tiny caulieflower

I dip into it twice a day, for breakfast on cereal and afternoon as a welcome cold drink or smoothie

Kefir is above and beyond any commercially packaged probiotics. I am 75 and in great health

Kefir starters are easily available, amazon or ebay. Fresh is best and home made is very cheap

Aveline, kimchi and sourkraut contain a lot of salt. Easily made and full of good bacteria but I only made them for a while because of the salt content

I take Boots multivitamin with added probiotics, about £5 for 30. I used to take Holland and Barret Acidophilus, but prefer to have the vitamins as well.

Symprove for me too. Yes, it is expensive and it doesn't necessarily work for everyone, but for me, it has literally been life-changing and worth every penny.

I also endorse Symprove. Obtainable on Amazon. Quite expensive but I have found that one or two months supply usually cures the problem. If you get the passion fruit flavour its not unpleasant. You take it on an empty stomach (before breakfast) so thats quite important.

I take a prebiotic along with probiotic. It says in the adverts ( Angela Ripon) that even if you look thin you can have internal fat that prebiotics help to break down. It’s like food for the probiotic. I’ve had digestive problems all my life and wish there had been as much information in the past as my digestive system has governed my life for years. One article I read said to take a probiotic that has to be kept in a fridge as they’re better. When I first started taking the prebiotic I did have awful stomach pain for a while, which, I suppose, shows that it was doing something. I think I should have started off with a tiny amount. I now take a pre biotic, probiotic, have kimchi and kefir most days. The prebiotic insulin is also supposed to help with sugar spikes, too. And, if you take it at night, helps you to sleep. Steph McGovern either made a programme about it or did a podcast and Michael Mosley did a podcast about prebiotic inulin. Mind you, because of covid etc I still haven’t made any long journeys or gone on any protest marches to test how much my digestive system has improved!

I am interested in this as I am seeing my gp shortly to discuss the dreadful state my gut is in. It’s always been a problem but recently got worse.
Have started to look into kefir, GF and just taken a course of probiotics which seem to have made no difference and have just run out, so hope she has some helpful advice. The tablets are not cheap.
Diet is healthy cooked from scratch, always watch what I eat but lurch from one end of the gut spectrum to the other with nothing normal in between. I was diagnosed with colitis a while ago but had no follow up after the diagnosis so the Diarrhoea/constipation rollercoaster just continues adnauseum.

Shinamae Tue 13-Jun-23 15:59:53

Now, I am really confused. 🤷‍♀️😂
Probiotic, prebiotic, inulin or kefir? 😩😜

Katyj Tue 13-Jun-23 17:12:41

Watching with interest. I’d like to improve my immune system. I’ve tried the Boots vitamins with probiotics, but they made me feel sickly.Anyone else had this problem ?

Madgran77 Tue 13-Jun-23 17:16:52

Kefir absolutely works for me. A glass every day for breakfast

Symprove, liquid probiotic. Expensive but very well reviewed and sorted my gut

Without a doubt the best you can get. It works differently to other probiotics.

Did you watch the Ch4 series Know your S**t? I actually binge watched it in the hope that someone in it might have the same problems that I have.

I use bio-kult which is the one stocked by my very good local herbalists: (ie they consider it The Brand)

once of sometimes twice a day. It's available on Amazon too now. it's not cheap but I consider it very helpful indeed. I am sure that natural ones like Kefir help but this works for me for ease of use.

Blondiescot Tue 13-Jun-23 17:50:03

If anyone does want to try Symprove, I can give you a code which will give you 50% off your first three months.

I take that one. Because, even though I’ve said it’s best to take ones that have to be kept in the fridge I have a terrible habit of taking them out of the fridge and forgetting to put them back in. I can also travel with them.

If anyone is interested why Symprove is so good, this article explains why.

Shinamae Tue 13-Jun-23 20:37:13

I have ordered Bio-kult so although the symprove sounds like the Rolls Royce of pro biotics they are way out of my price range….😬

Blossoming Tue 13-Jun-23 20:46:01

Biokult was recommended to me by a MacMillan bowel cancer nurse. I struggled to balance my diet following sigmoid colectomy and am doing much better with the help of these capsules.
