What NHS needs is not more money but needs to be better run

The OECD has published a report that shows that when it comes the money per head invested in health services the UK is one of the bigger spenders. Only 5 countries in the world spend more - US, Germany, France, japan and Austria.

However, when it comes to outcomes, despite this high expenditure we are way down in the rankings.

For example, on average OECD countries have 4.3 hospital beds for 1,000 people. The UK has 2.3., with only 5 below us. OECD has 38 members, so we are rank 33 out of 38. We have fewer MRI, CT and PET scanners and we also have some of the worst paid nurses.

Surely the time has come for a major review of how the health service is run in this country and why we get such poor outcomes from the money invested and with those in politics and the health service claiming it is underfunded.

It clearly is not under funded, just badly organised and run.

Before I retired a manager from the NHS joined the company. He stated that the NHS was a blackhole no matter how many billions was poured into it the money would disappear . He also said that giving GPs budget control was a mistake which I believe was a Blair decision. I took it he knew what he was talking about.

I have in the last few years had many dealings with hospitals and gps and have to say the mistakes and lack of care has been eye opening and disheartening and quite frankly terrifying I dread to think how someone without someone to advocate for them would get on.

My Husband has sleep apnoea and since he was diagnosed in Sept has had a machine and breathing mask to sleep in. He is now going on to his 4th mask and they cost about £150 each!,

None of them has been any good, they all have their problems but what a waste.

DH had sleep apnoea and got on very well with machine and mask, which he bought himself because the wait on the NHS was so long.

A year or two later, quite unrelated, he had a heart attack and triple bypass surgery - and hasn't has s;leep apnoea since.

M0nica i know several people who have had all the gear and it’s perfect from day one. We met the nurse last week and mentioned this and she said she meets plenty of people who have to try several before they get the right one. She nor the doctors can understand why he has it because he is not overweight at all.

We are now in separate bedrooms because the machines are so noisy. My son can even hear it in his bedroom along the landing and round the corner!

Pleased to hear you husband is well now.

Primrose I know many people do have problems with these machines. I was merely noting that my DH didn't have a problem, he certainly didn't take to it like a duck to water but got used to it, but was very glad to give it up.
