Phillips CPAP Machines may cause cancer

I can find no evidence of any incidents in the UK Primrose, USA only.
The DM seems to delight in these headlines to sucker people in, I think it is irresponsible.

I don't understand how this machine could cause cancer, it just seems that it " takes in room air, then filters and pressurizes it before delivering it through a tube and into your mask."

I suspect this is a panic caused by someone not understanding the difference between cause and co-incidence. and if it is the foam, not the machine, surely the answer is to change the foam, not change the machine?

I use a CPAP machine and I too was bemused by the mention of foam passing into airways. It would make breathing uncomfortable and I imagine could cause choking. As far as I know only air passes through.

DH has a CPAP machine, all it does is blow air down his neck. As far as I can see there isn't any foam anywhere in it and all it blows into him is air and watere vapour.

As far as I understand the machines are made in the U.S.

All that says is there was a problem found, so they replaced the machines?
Recalls happen all the time across a variety of products.

As soon as new machine arrives we will check the serial number and go from there.

I haven't seen the article, but I'm guessing that if foam is involved, it is within the filters, and presumably it is tiny particles of it that might be inhaled and potentially cause cancer.

If that's the case, hopefully they will just need to change the type of filter in the machines, though it wouldnt surprise me if it is hard to find an alternative that wouldn't shed any particles whatsoever. But science is not my thing, so I could be totally and utterly wrong.

Some people’s hatred of the DM (and people who read it) overshadows commonsense. It’s like when the DM reports on maybe a new drug or some cutting edge treatment. Haters say “it’s all made up. Don’t believe what the DM say”. yet in the article it will say somewhere that the info comes from the British Medical Association or other reliable source but they miss that completely. Sheer stupidity!

Well the new machine has arrived along with booklets, leaflets and loads more literature.

The most important thing is that the filters are no longer made of FOAM which was breaking down and producing dangerous particles which were then being inhaled.

The machine we received today has PAPER filters which sounds much better.

Philips have taken this very seriously and recalled loads of these machines and personally, we thank the DM for highlighting this. As users are on these machines every single night for maybe 8-10 hours it is vital that what they are breathing is just fresh air.

Primrose53 I doubt if many, if any, of those who constantly condemn the Daily Mail ever read it. We read it as part of a range of papers we read across the political spectrum.

The amount of political, or quasi political new in the paper is not large and it has award winning health and personal finance sections in it several days a week.

I would not say that it is anymore biassed and incorrect than The Guardian. I have been sometimes shocked by the misinformation and biassed reporting in that paper

The Guardian sounds very self righteous and priggish to me but I have to admit I have only read it a few times. I would guess ( probably wrongly) that the people writing for it are pretty young and a bit on the naive side.

First night using new machine and what a difference! Really quiet unlike the other one which sounded like you were in a tent in gale force winds. Husband had first good night’s sleep since September when he got the other machine.

For those of you who like myself use a ResMed CPAP machine please do not be alarmed. The type of foam used in these filters is not the same as that subject to recall by Phillips (or so I am led to believe).

Yes my cPap may be was recalled and replaced last year.
