We were told by a consultant a few weeks ago that there had been a production problem at Phillips. Guess what’s being delivered tomorrow ? a different CPAP machine by Phillips.
Now we read the production problem was because so many lawsuits were raised due to people getting cancers from the foams in these machines and production has been halted.
There is a big article about it in the Daily Mail today.

I've not actually read the article as it is not relevant to me, but I am glad my search came up with something useful.
It was mainly about the Philips machine so although interesting, was not really relevant to me thankfully.
Cripes ! Didn't these things save people's lives during the pandemic ?
Agree if it's not true , the DM or someone will get sued to wotsits.

I think you may be confused with ventilators Labradora.
People with sleep apnoea stop breathing when they are sleeping. In my husband’s case 30 times in an hour. The NHS provide CPAP machines, masks etc which they wear every night. Some people get on fine from day one, others take weeks and a few like my husband take months. He is on 2nd machine and 5th mask so far but the good news is he has come down from stopping breathing 30 times to just 6. It has not lowered his BP though which the Consultant hoped it would.
You are correct Labradora. CPAP machines were successfully used for patients with Covid during the pandemic. Many of us received letters asking us to return our machines for that purpose if we were not using them.

Well, I stand corrected then! I never knew that.
Who would have a CPAP machine and not use it? If you are a driver for example you need to confirm that your sleep apnoea is under control (ie by using the machine) or your licence can be taken away.
I know not everybody drives but why would anybody hang on to an expensive NHS machine that they don’t use?
Wouldn’t fancy being issued with a machine that had been used by a covid patient, cleaned or not.
I think some people just don’t get on with the machine and are embarrassed to admit it. Others are just lazy and can’t be bothered to return them like those who don’t return their mobility aids etc.

We couldn’t do that. We are very conscious that he is on his 5th mask and they cost about £150 each. The machine itself is nearly £2,000.
If you go to phillips.co.uk there is a list of products outside of the US that are affected and a list of safe devices.
I couldn’t do that either Primrose. I am aware of the cost as our hospital allows us only one new mask a year which is fine.
I just want to say a huge thank you to the OP. I hadn't seen the report about any CPap recall, but as my husband uses one, I persuaded/nagged him into contacting his clinic. Turns out that his IS one that is being recalled and they apologised for not getting in touch earlier. He's collecting his new one tomorrow. They did say the risk was very small, but even so ... better safe than sorry!

Aah thank you OurKid1. 👏👏. Hope your husband gets on with his new machine.
As often happens on GN some people use threads to either get at the OP, a newspaper they do not like or the Americans 🤣🤣
Glad I posted it now. Thanks again.

Yes, I know what you mean and this thread was drifting that way. He's got his new machine, but no medical people were available at the hospital clinic (!!) to discuss whether he should be concerned and why he wasn't notified. He's asked for his consultant to phone him to discuss and has been told that'll be at least 4 weeks away. So ... I've persuaded/nagged (again) him to ask for a telephone appt with his GP to find out more. He's had this machine for at least 4 years, and should have had a check every two apparently. He's laid back about it all, but I'm (not so) quietly fuming and want answers, particularly as he's been having tests for a recurring cough for months. At least it's on the way to being sorted now and he says his new machine is much smaller and lighter and generally less cumbersome, so hopefully it'll be fine. Thank you.
thanks for sharing
My Dh has a resmed machine, which also has a water tank, he found that the original one gave him a dry mouth. It has a made his sleep much better.

In case anyone is looking at this and expecting to see a thread about CPap machines (despite this being an old thread), I'd just like to say that Philips did report a problem and anyone using one should check with their consultant. I saw this thread back in February, my husband checked and his machine was indeed one of those affected. It was replaced and now no problems. They said they would have contacted him 'eventually', but I am so pleased I saw the original thread - without any scam posts!!
Wouldn’t it be nice if those people who sneered at this because it was first mentioned in the Daily Mail, were polite enough to apologise to the OP as it has already helped a few people on here.
