Heat and the Elderly.

Could swear I have Iniut in my gene pool. Temperatures from the early 20°s affect me. I've had heat exhaustion twice, once in Israel, once in Norfolk. It comes on so gradually you don't realise what's happening. By a lot of trial and error I've discovered that carrying a very small plant spray full of water and spraying it on my armpits and down the front and back of my neck cools me down best of all. It doesn't drench your clothes. I also wear a neck fan all summer. Both these devices have prevented

Just reviving this thread rather than start a new one. Yesterday the temperature where I live went up to 25 degrees. I was working in the garden over the lunch time period and when I came in started to feel really giddy and ill. I thought I was going to be sick and faint. Wow! Had a glass of water with a little salt and sugar, put fan on and relaxed in the cool. Thought of the late Michael Moseley. RIP.

But, if you ever feel a leg throwing itself over you in the night, its time to throw that pillow out...

My daughter and o were discussing having someone to cuddle in bed, and said it's a shame someone hasn't invented something.

We had a Google, and found a pillow dressed in mens Pjs, with an arm that can go around you.

There is a good choice. Will look at these when new duvet is needed.

I might go and google though, because almost anything is available these days.

Perhaps somebody has thought of it and produced one.

Separate single quilts on the same bed, perhaps?

3ft of single quilt v 90% of double quilt - don’t think he’ll go for that. Can you get a double duvet with 15 tog in one half and 9 tog in the other?

what extreme measures? I have slept in the spare bed but after 54 years of sharing a bed it is a bit lonely. I do get annoyed though if he steals all the covers and I am cold at 4am

I love sitting outside watching my washing dry and the weeds grow when others hate the heat. Every evening I watch TV with a blanket over my lap- sometimes I have to add the small electric pad as I am so cold. I go to bed every night with a 15 tog and a hwb.

please don't tell my husband you can get 15 tog duvets! our 13 tog is too hot for me - he has a wool blanket folded double on his side and wears a thermal top

I'm "only" 72 but have found the heat over the last couple of summers quite unbearable.
I bought a portable air conditioner two years ago and have just bought another ex-display, a bargain! They do bring the temperature down to bearable levels though I know it is an expensive way to deal with the problem.
I do most of my shopping online and if it is really hot I only go outside to take my grandchildren to school.
I keep my blinds down when the sun is on those windows and keep the awning down over my living room doors.

We've air con, makes the house bearable during the summer. I'm aware of cost, which is not large, however I'm thrifty other ways.

It's been really worthwhole for me, I felt as though I was barely surviving in 2022.

I have no thermostat ! Either I’m freezing or boiling. I’m on a lot of heart pills so I expect that’s the reason. I hate complaining but can’t help it sometimes!

I also can’t seem to cope with the extreme temperatures either. Always got more layers on than anyone else or legs hanging out the bed!
Thought there was a named condition for it but not sure, maybe there is something you can take to stop/ease it.

I struggle with the heat now too, but I recently discovered that it's actually one of the side-effects of my medication.

One of the good things about living alone is that I dont have to bother what I look like. In cold weather I wear a fleecy poncho with layers underneath. And in hot weather I wear flip flops and a smile.

I seem to always be either too hot or too cold! I used to love the heat, the summer of 1976 was bliss to me. Now at 78 I dread the mercury going over about 25.
