It said in the paper that the skin condition scabies is spreading rapidly in Britain.
It is caused by a mite that burrows under the skin and causes intense itching. It is spread by close contact with skin or infected clothing and bedding. Because a lot of doctors aren’t familiar with it, it’s often misdiagnosed as eczema with the result that one person infects the whole household. A neighbour who worked in a care home recently had it.
As a child it was seen as a disease of poverty but I suspect the rise in it today has everything to do with the government’s promotion of energy saving low temperature washes in the washing machine.
To kill the scabies mite infected clothing needs to be washed at a least 60 degrees and/or a tumble dryer on a hot setting used.
In the old days everyone boil washed their bedding.
It’s sad to see things that you thought had died out years and years ago resurfacing today.
