When to resume sex after hip replacement

Sorry if this is too explicit but if you dont ask...

I'm now 3 weeks post total hip replacement and am starting to think about sex! Trouble is, my DH is (ahem) very overweight and I'm quite skinny, so the thought of missionary scares the life out of me! I also can't widen my hips much (physio has given me a 'clam shell' exercise as part of standard physio and my knees just will not part).

I can't kneel down and get back up and I can't comfortably lie on my side to just 'do him'.

Should we just wait a bit longer, given that he is feeling a bit frustrated. He has 2 hands after all! Or is there a position we could try?

MissAdventure

I've seen this person post before, so nothing to suggest trolling.

What a fuss about a normal thing!

I think the OP also wondered when she could start running again.

Remember the thread about Botham and the Revitiv machine?
Someone suggested too much vibration could loosen the cement in joint replacements.
Running, sex - whatever, proceed with extreme caution.

ftm I can’t answer your perfectly reasonable question and am surprised it wasn’t raised at your discharge from hospital. I’d suggest contacting either where you had the op done or your GP, or perhaps on the knees and hip thread here.

Its very good you still have a physical relationship!
It's only 3 weeks so try and wait a bit longer for your body to heal.
Do you have a vibrator you could use? Discuss it with your man.

The advice is to wait till the anaesthetic has worn off.

Blow job? Sex toys? Doesn’t have to be one on one

Just imagine arriving in A&E with a painful dislocated hip after inventive cavorting, and being asked how it happened, and the sniggering that would go on behind the, non soundproof, curtains. 😵‍💫!

‘ Inventive cavorting’ is a splendid phrase!

Smelling salts for MissA

madalene Wed 30-Oct-24 15:54:29

Actually what are smelling salts? I always wondered.

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 15:58:37

My mum swore by her smelling salts.
Its a little bottle of very strong smelling "stuff", though I don't know what.

One sniff is enough to blow your hat off!

Smelling salts contain ammonium carbonate which gives off the pungent smelling ammonia. I remember learning this in a chemistry lesson at school smile

I like to think I'm broad minded but it's not an appropriate post for this site, or any other for that matter.
If this person hadn't posted before I would expect a group of hormonal teenagers on half term to be taking the p--s. !

Georgesgran Wed 30-Oct-24 16:14:32

It’s actually brightened my day reading all the replies. Obs, I need to get out more!

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 16:17:40

No idea why you would think that.
I'm pretty sure teens could be far more racey.

It's OK to talk about sex in 2024.

madalene Wed 30-Oct-24 16:19:03

Thank you ladies for smelling salts explanations.

Surely everyone carries smelling salts and wears one's pearls for occasions such as these?

I'm laughing out loud at some of the comments. Soo funny.

OldFrill Wed 30-Oct-24 16:40:42

My friend said had sex around six weeks, but don't tell his wife.
Plenty advice on Google.
I took think it's a genuine poster, seen them post on other threads

Marg75 Wed 30-Oct-24 16:40:53

Loving this thread! Haven't got anything I dare add but will keep reading 😂

Candelle Wed 30-Oct-24 16:41:55

I can't help the OP as I do not know the answer but surely this is a good place to ask ladies of similar ages, some of whom who will have gone through the same operation.

OP, I hope someone actually helps you although Miss Adventure of 00.48 seems to be on the right track!

Marydoll Wed 30-Oct-24 16:48:38

I don't understand why the OP doesn't ask her clinicians, who will be better informed of her situation, than those of us on here.

Howeevr, this thread has cheered me up with the witty responses.

I was 83 and widowed when I had my THR so have no advice to offer.

This post reminds me of the early days - when irreverent posts were the norm. Love it.

Ooh you are naughty! 😂
