When to resume sex after hip replacement

Sorry if this is too explicit but if you dont ask...

I'm now 3 weeks post total hip replacement and am starting to think about sex! Trouble is, my DH is (ahem) very overweight and I'm quite skinny, so the thought of missionary scares the life out of me! I also can't widen my hips much (physio has given me a 'clam shell' exercise as part of standard physio and my knees just will not part).

I can't kneel down and get back up and I can't comfortably lie on my side to just 'do him'.

Should we just wait a bit longer, given that he is feeling a bit frustrated. He has 2 hands after all! Or is there a position we could try?

I was going to post something rather naughty, but I am a good Catholic girl. 😇

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 17:02:50

How about sitting on your husband's err.... lap, facing away from him?

We won't tell anyone... smile

A friend was asked if she still had sex at her hip replacement consultation when she was in her 60's so I was all set for the conversation in July this year. I am 74, he didn't ask and so neither could I... I found.
hence the vested interest above....

Miss A, I have a saintly image to preserve.😉

BlueBelle Wed 30-Oct-24 17:22:11

Well mine has cobwebs so I can’t advise 🤣

I don't understand why the OP doesn't ask her clinicians, who will be better informed of her situation, than those of us on here.

Howeevr, this thread has cheered me up with the witty responses.

Agreed.

I assume everyone enjoys sex. And I further assume we're all adults. Ask clinicians as part of run up to a procedure and during after care. I do.

Everyone has a different body and recovery, just ask.

Well given me a laugh on a miserable dank afternoon!

Marg75 Wed 30-Oct-24 17:44:37

Ditto the cobwebs!

Oops.
I meant to quote Marydoll.

There was a deathly silence when I mentioned something similar on the hips and knees thread when I was approaching my THR....I thought I was being witty when I said that right at the back of a very thick book outlining everything I needed to do post op....the last 2 lines in tiny print said you can resume sex when you feel comfortable in doing so.... There was definitely a whiff of disapproval that I'd raised such a subject in-between picker upper thingys and raised toilet seats. Good for you wanting to get back to'normal'. Knowing only too well how difficult and painful sex can be with a grade 4 hip joint I too was looking forward to swinging from the chandeliers again. 😂. My DOH at the time ( now husband) didn't put me under any pressure to resume until I was ready...and I think it was about 3/4 weeks before we risked it. For fear of half the ladies on here needing resuscitating and the sale of smelling salts trebling I will only say...do not attempt to move your operated side wide but your other leg should be fine to extend ( as needed). One final piece of advice ..... You'll have to wait a bit longer before riding cowgirl and shouting yeeha😂😂😂😂😂

I don’t find this either explicit or offensive.

Sex between consenting adults is perfectly normal.

I’m still not sure if this is genuine though grin

kittylester Wed 30-Oct-24 18:24:04

Now I do need smelling salts!! grin

Thank you Naughtyneine straight from the hip…so to speak🙂

Coolgran65 Wed 30-Oct-24 19:25:45

Doesn't offend me at all. We're all adults.
I suggest you give him a little manual pleasure and save yourself until you are ready.

Visgir1 Wed 30-Oct-24 19:28:49

If you Google it, it suggests 3 months.

ftm420 Wed 30-Oct-24 19:31:46

Good grief. You'd think I'd written a porn novel from some of the reactions. I honestly can't believe no one has thought about this before!

It's the sort of thing I've read from mumsnet over many years before I transferred to gransnet. Does everyone just stop when they are over 60?!

FoghornLeghorn Wed 30-Oct-24 19:33:59

Goodness. What an uptight and easily offended lot you all are. Gransnet indeed!

Galaxy Wed 30-Oct-24 19:34:41

I would think it was a troll on MN too as would many on MN, its nothing to do with age, it is to do with the fact that there are lots of trolls. This doesnt mean u are one it just means there are a lot of trolls.

Quite. I’m sorry you’ve received such ridiculous responses for your perfectly reasonable question. It’s like we’ve been transported back to 1950. I hope when you do manage to recommence your sex life that you remember to turn the lights out and just delicately raise the hem of your winceyette nightdress.

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 19:49:49

Well, I did suggest facing away from the husband, so at least you wouldn't have to look at hi enjoying "congress". 🙀

Esmay Wed 30-Oct-24 19:51:48

I don't think that you've posted before If this is a serious question :
Three weeks is too early .
Healing will permit sex between six to eight weeks after the incisions have fully healed .
Full healing around the joint itself takes a full three months .
If your hubby is overweight he needs to do something about it . He shouldn't lie on top of you .
You'll have to pleasure him manually .

And most importantly :
you need to consult your doctor .

MissAdventure Wed 30-Oct-24 19:53:33

She has posted before, about having had a hip replacement!
