Kaolin and morph

Do you remember it? It was grandad's favourite 'go-to' for any kind of tummy upset, but you can't buy it over the counter at the chemist's any more (because of the 'morph' I expect). Our lovely independent chemist used to make it up himself.
DH felt a bit bilious last night, I'd been lazy and opened a tin of Frey Bentos steak pie, and admit the pastry was a bit soggy underneath.
And I remembered the days when I'd have had a bottle of K&M in the bathroom - but all I had was milk of magnesia. It stopped him feeling sick but he still had stomach cramps.
What is the modern substitute?
Is there one?

cc

I found some online: www.chemist-4-u.com/care-kaolin-mixture-200ml

It says Out of stock, and probably has been for a long time!

Oh yes Indian Brandee I remember it well. When I was a girl I suffered badly with period pains my dad never said anything apart from …..a bit off are you today, I’ll fetch you some Indian Brandee…..and off he would go to the corner shop carrying a cup and return with 4 penny worth which he warmed and watched as I drank it, then that was it the wonder cure. With a wife and 4 daughters Dad must have fetched gallons of the stuff over the years bless him x

I was also a dispenser in the 60s and used to make up 20 fluid oz bottles of Kaolin and Morphine!

My late mum always had some in the cupboard.

Codeine or co-codamol would do it. It's the opiate that is known for causing constipation and therefore works for diarrhoea symtoms.

Buscopan is much cheaper on Amazon, if buying them.
Have just ordered some.

Indian Brandee for period pains. It was warm and soothing even if it had no other properties! My dad swigged Andrews Liver Salts (you can still buy it) for indigestion (from which he suffered a lot). He died of stomach cancer so maybe it wasn't a good idea. The mum of a friend swore by Dog Oil for joint and muscle pains - she was still doing Yoga at 99! And my dear granny used Dr White's Compo for everything , as did her 8 siblings, and all lived into their 90s, with one dying a week before her 105th birthday and made the local newspaper as the oldest resident ever known in Derbyshire. Oh, and I've just remembered Zambuk for skin infections, sores and bruises. Greasy dark green stuff. You can still buy that as well.

Imodium is used to stop diaorrhea or you can buy other brands. Buscopan acts on the bowel muscle by relaxing it thus helping with cramping pains. Useful for IBS!

Port & brandy together, full measure of brandy 1/2 measure of port so i.e. equal measures = 1/6gill. Works every time for me. I used that when I had my awful period cramps too. Enjoy

It used to make me sick, not deter it. Awful stuff.

Woodward's gripe water was always rather nice!

It seems its the 'morph' that gives that almost instant pain relief followed by the kaolin that binds up with the food you've just eaten and expels it harmlessly that made it my family's go-to for any gastric problem.
I don't suppose the occasional intake of opiates harmed us.
Interesting how many there were.

I remember this from my youth. It's still available online.

The mind boggles what used to be taken
On slightly different lines. In sixties my mum used to put lead and opium poultices on a knee that used to regularly swell up

If you are going to France, visit a pharmacy and stock up on SMECTA. It comes in a box of little sachets which you mix with water - from the taste of it, I’d say it def contains kaolin (or Fullers Earth). It’s really good. As others have already mentioned, the combination of paracetamol & codeine which you can buy OTC here is also a good one - codeine can control diarrhoea. Interestingly, you can rarely, if ever, get this combination without a prescription in other countries.
