Started last week with a very sore throat, now a full blown head cold. Muffled hearing, stuffy nose but dripping like a tap, lack of energy and a dry tickly cough. Had planned to get out for a walk this morning to try and clear my head in fresh air. But, all I want to do is snuggle under a blanket in the sofa. Would you force yourself to go out in the cold or stay home in the warm???

Grandma70s Mon 08-Dec-25 10:51:58

Stay at home! Look after yourself.

Luckygirl3 Mon 08-Dec-25 10:52:36

Oh bad luck - get thee to a snuggly blanket and be kind to yourself while your body fights this off!

rafichagran Mon 08-Dec-25 10:56:09

Stay inside under the blanket.

Aveline Mon 08-Dec-25 11:02:08

Stay in an even temperature. Do whatever you need to to remove any stress on your body so it can concentrate on fighting off these nasty germs.

I have had this whatever it is for a week. Stay fully hydrated, sip water, and steam inhalation at least 3 times a day. I tried a decongestant and a vapour rub on my feet and chest. Take it easy or else!

Stay in the warm, hot water bottle, blanket, sofa and Judge Judy 🤣

I've had the same kind of cold - why do they call it a 'common cold', a description that belies the havoc the virus can cause? I am grateful I don't have to explain myself for permission to stay put. Many years ago, when I phoned my head of department to say I had a bad cold and he shouldn't expect to see me, I could almost hear his eyebrows rising and knew he was thinking it was 'only' a cold. I just hoped that he would catch it too.

Sarnia Mon 08-Dec-25 11:24:32

Indoors and stay warm and hydrated.

HelterSkelter1 Mon 08-Dec-25 11:24:55

Goodness stay home in the warm. Plenty of liquid and rest and you will get better more quickly.

fancyflowers Mon 08-Dec-25 11:52:58

Stay at home, try to sleep and drink plenty. You can go to bed rather than try and rest on the sofa.
Vicks vapour rub or Olibas oil are both good choices, and a honey and lemon hot drink for your sore throat.

I am just getting over exactly the same.
Started last Tuesday evening , got worse by Wednesday evening and by Thursday I felt grim.
I had to cancel 3 social outings and as I don’t have many I was cross.
However I felt it more a duty not to inflict it on anyone else.
It is only today I feel better, not totally, but mostly.
Stay in the warmth and spoil yourself, “you are worth it”

“ a cold left alone will last a week, treated with everything you can throw at it it will be over in 7 days”

I woke up a couple of nights ago with stomach cramps. I was very sick, and unfortunately I couldn’t stop. It carried on through the next day, goodness knows how many times. I gave up counting after 12 bouts. No diarrhoea, just the vomiting. I was sipping water constantly between bouts, to avoid dehydration, and mostly kept it down, at least for a few minutes. That went on for 14 hours.
Now, two days later, I still feel rough. I still have a cramping stomach, but no diarrhoea today. The worst thing now is, I have got really weak legs. I feel as though they will give way whenever I walk around the flat. I rang the doctor who said it’s a bug which will settle over the next couple of days. He made no comment about the leg weakness other than that.
Has anyone else had this? If so, what, if anything, did you do to help it?
Thank you.

Luckygirl3 Mon 08-Dec-25 13:04:39

Ah - more diagnoses over the phone. It probably is a bug but it is a brave doctor who blandly makes that assumption in an elderly person.

travelsafar I’ve got the same - but due to my lung problems (Bronchiectasis) I have decided to start antibiotics , and have come up to bed.
Crosstitchfan - yes I had similar last year. It was food poisoning , after eating a prepared salad from a very popular store. I even had bleeding .
Get well soon everyone …

Thank you all. Hope those who are poorly too get well soon

Sorry to hear you feel so rotton.

I developed a wracking cough on Friday, barely slept all night, got up Saturday, let out the cats, made coffee, took a mugful back up to bed and stayed there all Saturday, quarter of an hour later the female cat curled up beside me, having jettisoned her normal morning inspection of the garden after weeing. Twenty minutes later her brother joined us.

Sunday morning I cancelled what I was supposed to do that day, and remained resolutely indoors, as I have never believed that pouring rain is weather to walk in.

Tuesday now - I am still more tired than I should be, but have practically got rid of the cough and runny nose, am able to fulfil various commitments although tire quicker than normal.

So, stay indoors, cosset yourself, make sure you get plenty to drink of water, tea, coffee or anything else non-alcoholic and rest.

hope this works as well for you as it has for me. (Though I suspect a purring cat, or two as a permament hottie helps too.)

I’ve just had the same. No way would I force myself out in the cold! I had two days in bed I felt so rough, hacking cough, seriously blocked nose, coughing and blowing what felt like gallons of mucous, limited breathing and exhaustion. My lovely husband made me breakfast, lunch, cups of tea etc in bed, where I rested and slept and got up when my body was ready. That’s the key….listen to your body without guilt!

Esmay Tue 09-Dec-25 15:40:37

Always rest when you are unwell .
You are stressing out your body in the cold .

You need to be warm and super hydrated.
Bit late for echinacea but Id take it with Vit C and zinc .
Make some real chicken soup loaded with garlic, onions and if you like it ginger and chilli.
I had a mucous overload and one hot curried soup nipped in the bud .

Etoile2701 Tue 09-Dec-25 15:51:54

Stay at home!

welbeck Tue 09-Dec-25 16:00:30

Hunker down.
Send out for or get someone to bring you New Covent Garden soup or similar.
Add in to that any useful ingredients you might have.

albertina Tue 09-Dec-25 17:49:46

Don't force yourself to do anything. Rest, rest, and rest some more. It's the best way to get better. Eat what you like, order online, and drink lots and lots of fluids.
Get well soon.

MollyNew Tue 09-Dec-25 17:58:54

We are just getting over a similar cold in our house. The only things that worked for us were rest, paracetamol and fluids - not alcohol. I also found that avoiding dairy for a few days helped to reduce mucus build up. I always find the classic hot lemon and honey is comforting but I don't know how much it actually reduces symptoms.

Kats2 Tue 09-Dec-25 18:07:32

Doctors do say the reason you are told to rest when you’re ill, is so that you conserve your energy to fight off the virus or whatever it is thats ailing you..so looks like the sofa wins…
