I hope my tale of woe will make you laugh - but a change to my normal medication means I haven't been able to poo for three days now!

My eyes are almost popping out from the straining!

Please can everyone wish me good luck that one day I can finally "go" !!!

Soft dried apricots - never fails me

NotaGrannie Sat 21-Feb-26 17:36:39

Under normal circumstances
Kiwi fruit is effective and gentle - keeps things moving

I also keep linseeds in a pepper grinder and add a sprinkling over any and all foods. Linseeds are more effective when ground, otherwise can pass straight through grin
The ground linseeds are tasteless and can be added to sweet/savoury foods, sandwiches, salads etc

The sprinkling becomes routine and easy to maintain.

hope things ease for you soon

Remember Syrup of Figs? My mother’s go to.

My sister ‘went’ only once a week and survived for 85 years .
But if it’s bothering you, prunes are your best friend.

Please Do Not strain. You can end up with a prolapse. Just try some of the advice given by other posters.
A doctor recommended raisins to friend.

As well a diet suggestions for the long term

Lots of fluid.
Longer than ususal walks. Walking, if you can, helps a lot.

You need a mixture of softening laxatives and make you go laxatives

The standard "make you go" laxative is Dulcolax, or Senna tablets. If needed as a one off occasionally use more than the general dosage, I do, it's OK.

Movicol is a softening laxative, expensive but one of the tops, as lactulose is. I take extra Movicol if stuck as well as the make you go.

(I'm on tablets that make me constantly constipated without help)

An enema will de bung you. You can buy on Amazon and self administer or someone else. (Squirt up bum near a toilet if you can reach the relevant bit to do yourself.)

My personal advice is try large dose lactulose or movicol asap combined with a "make you go" and.... stay home.

But don't stay sitting, move around, bend and stand, and if you can do these:

Prunes usually do the trick imo. I keep a couple of cans in just in case and half a can for breakfast two days in a row usually does the trick.

When things were too "difficult" for even that the other day = a quick question on ChatGPT and back came comments about drinking a glass of warm water, taking a short walk, lubricating the relevant area (vaseline or olive oil or coconut oil). All resolved very quickly after that.

Thanks everyone.

There's nothing worse than needing to go and being 'stuck' !!!

Hopefully I will be able to go today!

We're all waiting for the big moment. I don't really give a crap, but wishing you a speedy evacuation.

Bowl fibre flakes couple days gives me a boost .

pce612 Tue 24-Feb-26 14:05:39

Try eating a quantity of dried apricots. Works for me. Boost your fibre intake and keep hydrated.
Inulin (Amazon sells it) is a natural soluble fibre, I use a little bit in black coffee to take the edge off - it is mildly sweet - and you can cook with it.
Good luck.

My Mom used to swear by conference pears and kiwis to keep her 'regular'. I also find they work well for me.
Try not to strain as this can cause piles. A doctor once told me that when going to the toilet put your feet up on a low box or basket and lean back slightly. This adjusts the position of the bowel and allows you to 'go' without causing problems.

Lactolosr of caffeine always does the trick for me

Bazza Tue 24-Feb-26 14:22:13

No amount of fruit or fibre works for me. I was prescribed Laxido and it changed my life! Can be bought over the counter too.

dogsmother Tue 24-Feb-26 14:30:24

All the above, plus lots of water and a good walk. I have been through it all including haemorrhoids and surgery which was horribly painful.

sparkle1234 Tue 24-Feb-26 14:37:25

A sachet of movicol in the morning , a senna tablet evening . Breakfast a bowl of all bran with warm milk and a few prunes after your evening meal . Drink a large glass of water intermittently throughout the day and brace yourself for some farting then evacuation. Don't strain , your body will do it naturally.

Esmay Tue 24-Feb-26 14:48:28

After cleaning yourself soak a large cotton wool pad with baby or olive oil .
Hold it against your anus and gently push -do it several times.
As the faeces retreat they will have absorbed some of the oil and are far easier to pass .

Suppositories are good, usually work in about fifteen minutes.
