I hope my tale of woe will make you laugh - but a change to my normal medication means I haven't been able to poo for three days now!

My eyes are almost popping out from the straining!

Please can everyone wish me good luck that one day I can finally "go" !!!

Jodieb Sat 21-Feb-26 15:13:50

Only 3 days!? Lucky you!

JaneJudge Sat 21-Feb-26 15:16:36

pickled gerkins are quite good at getting things moving

Prunes are your friends. Lots of them!

JaneJudge Sat 21-Feb-26 15:26:25

oh and anything with kidney beans in!

Astitchintime Sat 21-Feb-26 15:30:24

I find eating an orange or a couple of clementines in the evening helps me. Prunes are good too and be sure to drink plenty of water.

On a serious note OP, don’t strain at the loo, it will lead to further complications.

Magnesium

Or laxative based suppositories.

It's not funny, according to District Nurse.
You need to go to hospital if it persists.

Thanks everyone - I need dynamite up my bottom to deal with my constipation!

Laxatives and suppositories.

As this keeps happening to you, RebeccaJames, do you think you need to go for further investigations.

Or at least change your diet?

It is the most unpleasant experience.

3-4 years ago, I had covid swiftly followed by a very bad dose of the flu. The result of all the medication was being totally blocked to the eventual extent that I couldn’t sit down and my body (just like going into labour) went into pushing mode totally outside of my control - I was was sent pronto to A&E.

The doctor manually evacuated my bowel 😳😳😳, then gave me a very strong suppository. After 20 minutes I then proceeded to totally block the lavatory in A&E.

I have sworn to myself that I will never allow that to happen again. So every day I strive to eat 30g fibre and drink 6-8 glasses of fluid. I also (belt and braces😀) take 5+ml lactulose daily.

There is nothing more miserable imo

Tell yourself 'This too shall pass'!
After my first knee op I had this problem. A comforting GNer told me that when he finally managed to 'go', he felt he should notify the coastguard about an approaching danger to shipping!

RebeccaJames told us it happened last year and the year previously after operations.

Yes, the medication can do it, as well as iron tablets.

There must have been good advice on those threads.

Hope this helps.
Don't strain!

Usedtobeblonde Sat 21-Feb-26 15:54:36

I have just eaten 2 large kiwi fruits in my battle.
I have prunes, apricots and raisins on my bran cereal as well but still need lactulose occasionally.
It actually isn’t funny at all.

Chia seeds are supposed to be very good, although if you eat too many they have the opposite effect.

LOUISA1523 Sat 21-Feb-26 15:56:33

Movicol was my friend when I was having chemo...took it daily

grandMattie Sat 21-Feb-26 15:57:17

Pineapple does it for me.
Good luck!

Liquorice

RebeccaJames Sat 21-Feb-26 16:16:25

Thanks everyone smile

CocoPops Sat 21-Feb-26 16:55:05

2 glycerine suppositories

Fallingstar Sat 21-Feb-26 17:09:30

Chocolate works for me every time, or liquorice Allsorts. And I just so happen to love eating them both so am pretty regular 🤣

Fallingstar Sat 21-Feb-26 17:10:34

Dried apricots or prunes if you want dynamite.

GrannieWalker Sat 21-Feb-26 17:20:57

Get your feet up! RebeccaJames
When sitting on the loo … raise your feet. The stretcher bar on my bathroom stool (that’s the item of furniture ‘stool’, not the other!!! wink ) is about 8/9 inches above the floor, perfect perch for my feet to move things along nicely.
As well, of course, aiming for high fibre diet, keeping hydrated and boosting healthy gut biome.
Last resort is lactalose and senna when medication has upset everything.
