My partners going to Boots on Tuesday so he’s going to get some for me.

I think I've got this now. It's useful to read other people's experiences. I've had it for a week now, pouring nose and now cough setting in. I had the RSV vaccine and flu, does it help much identifying the virus? I don't know, sounds like a long haul whatever it is.

I’ve been reading up on some of the cold and flue remedies I’ve been taking and I think some of them were making me feel worse. Eg I kept feeling very strange after taking the Boots cold and flu sachets. The ingredients in some of them could either make you drowsy or keep you awake depending on how you reacted to them. What I don’t understand is how I caught anything as I rarely go anywhere. And my partner was sat in the living room for a week with me coughing constantly and yet didn’t catch it.

I have been feeling dreadful for about 10 days. Cold symptoms but freezing and shivery even with heating on. It went to my chest agrivating my asthma. However seeing a doctor here is virtually impossible and there is no way they will give out antibiotics. It's hot lemon drinks Jakemans and soups and letting nature take its course.

MayBee my DH never caught it from me either. His immune system must be very robust indeed.

My DH never catches anything, I'm drowning through my nose, he's sipping coffee and reading the news.
I have tried everything to stop my nose running and sneezing. Antihistamines, decongestant spray, saline spray, camomile tea, a warm cloth, ibuprofen, sttepsels, those Swiss lozenges, can't remember the name. Still sneezing, feel like I'm going mad, such a nice day too.

I did find alternate nostril breathing calmed things down but I can't do that all day. Anyone any other suggestions?

I found a saline spray to be a great help. And Benylin. Can’t believe how many tissues I’ve got though. The nose has now stopped running but I’ve still got a bit of a cough and the biggest cold sore.

Those decongestant sprays can have a paradoxical effect if used more than a couple of days. Overuse of them and saline sprays can prolong congestion.

Be careful. The decongestant sprays can also cause nosebleeds, too because the steroid component thins the skin in the nasal cavities making it easier to rupture the cluster of blood vessels up there.
My partner was a regular user until one night last year when he had a sudden bleed while driving. Happily, we hadn't quite got to the motorway and he was able to get off the road. It didn't stop and we ended up being fast-tracked through A&E, spending most of the night there. It's very scary, watching someone you love apparently about to bleed to death in front of you and being able to do nothing.
Believe me, after that experience and talking to the consultant who treated him, neither of us will ever touch those sprays again.

My DH has tested positive for covid but I am testing negative despite feeling really rough, chills, headaches, etc., has been like this for three days and have done two tests.
His test came back with a definite line immediately so the tests are obvs working. Suppose I could have caught something else but it seems weird.

I tested negative in early September but the doc said my symptoms mirrored those of the new Covid variant. Took a while to recover and increased breathlessness

What a scary story Scribbles , thanks to you and Aveline and MayBee , I've never used a decongestant before except in cough medicine or Lemsip. I had a lemon and honey this afternoon and that has helped a little but I feel really hammered by this virus. There are so many different viruses now.

Aveline Sat 14-Mar-26 18:44:48

I always know I'm ill if I really fancy a Lemsip! It's very comforting when you've got a cold

I've just done a Covid test and it was negative, they always are! I have had Covid once despite vaccinations and I remember how fierce it felt and how it hung on. I've just discovered that two of my daughters are feeling rough with a similar virus as me, there's a lot of it about.

I started doing Huff coughing because I was coughing so hard I thought I was going to get a hernia.

It's a horrible, hacking cough isn't it? Hope you get a reasonable night's sleep, I had 5 hours last night and a nap this afternoon.

I’m pretty much ok now. But I had a similar virus when I was working; it lasted for weeks. I had to sleep upright and it made me temporarily incontinent. I went to a walk in centre one day because I was coughing up blood but they still wouldn’t give me anything…I did end up having to take antibiotics. Another time I was given a beclometasone inhaler to use for a short while and that really helped. But it’s impossible to get a doctors appointment these days.
