Fenning’s Little Healers.

Famel Syrup for coughs. I loved the taste. Evidently it was discontinued due to containing creosote 😨

Vick before it became Vicks, cod live oil, Virol, (I loved Virol)
Sugar and soap if you got a stubborn splinter, heated salt in a handkerchief for earache, a drop of whiskey on an aching tooth
Andrew’s liver salts, germalene, half a crushed up aspirin in jam for everything else, calamine lotion for sunburn or measles and chickenpox spots Milton for cleaning wounds.

We were talking about this a few years back and my kids said their lasting memory of being ill was lucozade and chicken noodle soup

My mother in law taught me to use arrowroot for the runs it works a treat

Romala was it zinc and castor oil cream? My Mother always rubbed our chests with Vick if we had a cold believing that the consequent redness showed that she had drawn out some of the inflammation!

Grammaretto Mon 05-Oct-26 07:44:01

All of the above from my own childhood . Gosh such memories!

Wrights coal tar soap and a Wright's vaporiser for my DD who had chest infections and couldn't sleep.
Also zinc and ichthiol or ich thymol? For nappyrash. Stained the terry nappies but did the trick.
Gripe water for babies - which contained alcohol.

Andrews Liver Salts (my cousin used to eat it with a spoon, urggghhhh).
Ammoniated tincture of quinine (for colds - you had to ask the chemist for it and he'd fill a bottle while you waited).
Aspirin (the go-to headache pill - or any ache, come to think of it).
Cod liver oil (Mum would give it to the cat!).
Vinegar (Dad's cure-all for cuts & grazes, done't even ask).

Lots of memories in the posts. Mum was a nurse and painted a grazed knee with Gentian Violet. I must google it and see what it contained. I was forever falling off my scooter or bike and had colourful knees and elbows most of the time.

Andrew’s Liver Salts.
Malt.
Cod liver oil
Ex lax.

My mum used to make 'onion juice' when we all had coughs, colds and sore throats. Not sure whether it had any benefits but we kids loved it and still feel nostalgic about it. Not sure of the recipe but guess it was just onions, water and sugar in a big (at the time) screw top jar.

Virol. A delicious sticky malt given by the spoonful daily. It was meant to build babies and children up after the war and rationing years. As I have never been an ideal weight it certainly did the trick with me.
Cod Liver Capsules These dreadful things took over from Virol when I was about 7. I was always scared one would burst before I swallowed it.
Californian Syrup of Figs. A large spoonful every Friday night whether I needed it or not. My parents generation were obsessed with the bowels.

Just loved Virol! The other one we had was Pulmo Bailey (not sure of spelling) as my Dad had very bad lungs and this helped.
Also Germoline and Caladryl Lotion.

Peacelilydilly Mon 05-Oct-26 09:44:36

Beechams Powders and Andrews Liver Salts.

Esmay Mon 05-Oct-26 09:49:44

Calpol was introduced in 1959 ,but I don't remember it.
We had Dr Collis Browne.
I took it for stomach cramps and later for period pain .
I don't recall it working !

I remember the liquafruita for coughs.

Also minadex for coughs. It was a ghastly lime green colour.

Pink calomnie lotion that turned white as it dried.

Malt and cod liver oil.

Syrup of figs.

Beecham's powders.

fancyflowers Mon 05-Oct-26 11:27:56

I've just googled minadex and it seems to be a brand name now. When I was young it was a liquid.

My mother’s remedy for feeling bilious or nauseous was milk and soda. This was cold milk mixed with soda water. It was very pleasant.

Californian Syrup of Figs. A large spoonful every Friday night whether I needed it or not. My parents generation were obsessed with the bowels.

That generation and also ours had low numbers of bowel cancer so maybe they knew a thing or two.
We didn’t have a medicine cabinet, we had a large old biscuit tin in the kitchen cupboard full of stuff.
I remember a tatty old packet of Bile Beans, always some Beechams Powders, syrup of fig, assorted plasters, aspirin and a bottle which looked ancient called Fennings Fever Cure.
Also Vicks Vapour rub and some green stuff for chilblains.

Oreo Mon 05-Oct-26 12:11:00

Oh, Calamine Lotion and cotton wool balls Germaline and also Andrews Liver Salts.
Also Indian Brandy for period pains and stomach cramps.

Oreo Mon 05-Oct-26 12:11:52

Kaolin and morphine for upset tums.

Nell82 Mon 05-Oct-26 13:34:34

Anyone remember?

"If the bottom has fallen out of your life take Beechams Powders and your life will fall out of your bottom"

Skodadoda Mon 05-Oct-26 13:47:18

MaggsMcG

Syrup of figs. Milk of Magnesia. Germoline. Asprin. Disprin. Junior Disprin or Asprin (it was orange) and Haliborange.
TCP. Some pink throat tablets that really did a good job but I cant remember what they were called, not Strepsils.

Pink throat tablets were possibly Tyrozets, made your mouth numb. You can still get them.

• Chlorodyne (Collis Browne’s) in the late 1940s and 1950s — cured anything, thanks to its now illegal ingredients!
• Germolene ointment
• Thermogene — warming medicated wadding that you put on your chest
• syrup of figs
• cod liver oil

Delila Mon 05-Oct-26 13:55:05

The only “medication” I remember from childhood was a dash of brandy in hot milk - to “sweat it out”. Very nice too.

mrsjonesy Mon 05-Oct-26 13:57:18

Quite a few of the things that have already been mentioned, plus Gripe Water for the baby
