It’s interesting reading these comments. One thing that stands out is the number of products to tackle constipation. It seems to have been an obsession for many people in the middle of the twentieth century.

I'd forgotten the tiny jar of menthol crystals!
Assume lots of you had those too.

My dad made a linctus with the syrup of marshmallow (mentioned earlier) -
Equal measures of syrup of marshmallow, rum, and olive oil!
You had to shake it fairly well as it separated out.

None apart from Vick abd tiny bottle of olive oil for earache.. My mother was convinced we were what we ate and luckily we were fine apart from odd cold where drinking loads of water and getting in the fresh air was her cure.

Your mother was very wise Allsorts, although I think nowadays, its more about what you don't eat (sugary & UPFs) thats so important!

Bonamint was a chewing gum laxative as well

I was born when food rationing was on and money was tight, just a little 2p bar of chocolate each a week. Baking once a week, jam tarts, rock cakes, occasional victoria sponge with eggs from our hens in our back garden, everyone seemed to keep them, so egg custards too. Had to last the week. Everyday a pudding, treacle sponge, spotted dick, rice pudding, to fill us up. Only remember one child in our small school not being slim.It must have neen such hard work for our mothers.. I used to envy a girl at school, an only child who came with shop cakes and sweets wrapped in shiny paper. We had an apple every day, occasionally an orange. I remember the earache and toothache, you dreaded it. Some families used to live on chips though.. Never remember constipation or diarrhoea being mentioned.

I remember Askit powders for headaches and an aunt used to swear by brewe's yeast for a pick me up . My father used to eat a brown granuled stuff called I think Bemax because he thought it was good for him. My mother was a nurse and I never remember having a medicine chest in our house.

I remember sprinkling askit powder on a wisdom tooth that kept trying to come through.
Marvellous stuff.
Haven’t seen it for years I think you can still buy Beechams but not as nice tasting.

Oil of cloves for toothache. Tasted disgusting but worked!
