Just remembered iodine. I remember mum putting it on a jagged barbed wire cut. Boy did it hurt!

Toothache tincture
Senna pods

My Dad always had TCP In stock which he swore by. My Mum used to buy things called Bile Beans. Funny how that just came to mind.

Zubes for sore throats and coughs. They came in a little tin - I still have one of the tins!

My friend’s DM always had a supply of ‘blue bags’ for putting on insect bites and stings.

Real trip down my Memory Lane this one. Remember nearly everything that has been mentioned by posters.

What about Fennings Little Healers, Oil of Cloves and yummy Ross Hip Syrup.

Syrup of Figs was definitely the work of the Devil.

Dr.Collis Browne.
Honey , Lemon & Ipicacuana, cough syrup.
Children’s asprin , orange flavour. I think they may have been called something like Angiers.
There was also a liquid that was dabbed onto bruises but I can’t remember what it was called.

Think the liquid was either Witchhazel or if brown iodine

Beechams powders

Liaise Mon 05-Oct-26 18:12:49

BAZZA Beechams Powders were for colds and pain as far as I remember.
My Mother said that if you had a bottle of cough linctus you always bought another because it had morphine in it. When we lived in Canada a doctor was very shirty over that fact even though I never had any.

Grandma600 Mon 05-Oct-26 18:22:37

Oil of cloves for toothache (fortunately I never needed to test its efficacy)
Challip for cold sores (stung like billyo and was no use whatsoever
Sanatogen (never did find out what that was all about, but its strapline was "fortified the over forties")
Pink Germolene
Vaseline
Collis Brown Compound

Gin Mon 05-Oct-26 18:23:20

Parishes Iron Tonic was awful stuff. The doctor said I should take it but I hated it and in desperation, as a young child, I climbed up.on the dresser and hid the bottle behind some water pipes and never owned up’. By now the liquid will have turned into iron filings ‘. This was in the 1950s

Germolene, vaseline, calamine lotion, dispirin and junior dispirin, gripe water, vicks vaporub, olive oil for earaches, Andrew's liver salts, throat lozenges, plasters, a bandage and cotton wool. I can smell the bathroom medicine cabinet in my memory - it was a very distinctive smell.

Musicgirl Mon 05-Oct-26 18:29:45

Oh, I forgot the Milk of Magnesia. It was in a blue bottle and I was never quite sure what it was used for

Vic's Vaporub. I'm from US. This horrid ointment was rubbed on our chests almost every winter night. Supposed to keep us from getting pneumonia.

It was widely sold here in the UK, too. It was rubbed on your back and chest if you had a cold.

harrysgran Mon 05-Oct-26 18:37:39

A children's aspirin called Topsy pit was small pink in a little bottle with cotton wool in the top

DonkeyOaty Mon 05-Oct-26 19:16:57

That should read Fennings.
