Does anyone remember their parents saying they.had goosegrease rubbed on their chests when they had a cough? My mother often mentioned this. She said a layer of brown paper was placed on top of the grease. My mother had a country upbringing, my father a city one and he said he had never heard of it. Fortunately she never used it on me.
I have enjoyed reading the recollections, brought back memories!

We were very poor so my parents had no money to waste on stuff we didn’t need. We had calamine lotion in for when I got heat lumps/ hives. Germolene for cuts and grazes and nothing else that I can remember. It never occurred to them to give us vitamins or laxatives and we were very healthy.

Yes, that’s what I was just about to add! A lovely, warm and safe feeling, even if you weren’t very well!

Does anyone else remember quinoderm for spots as a teenager?

Mecca. Not sure if that was just a Canadian thing though. It was a salve in a small tin. My mother used it on everything. Haven’t seen it for sale for years.

Germolene when it was pink and in a flattish yellow tin, plus Disprin. Also cod liver oil and malt - loved that!

My Granny used goose grease with orange Thermogene wadding over it.

Sorry GN's, I haven't the time to trawl through 6 pages but does anyone remember Bates Salve? I was shaped like the old fashioned sealing wax but was black.
Whenever I had a cut or graze, out would come the biscuit tin with rolls of old sheeting torn into strips and the Bates Salve. I dreaded watching my Mum holding a match to it and seeing the hot salve drip onto the bandage. It would then be slapped onto my cut whilst still hot. Nowadays it's Peppa Pig plasters.

Does anyone remember Galloways cough mixture? I loved it. Mum would give us it in a little drop of hot water at night.

Sarnia I don't remember that but I do remember some ghastly stuff called Nu-Skin which was a liquid plaster, painted on to cuts to seal them instead of using conventional plasters.
It stung and was quite painful. Horrible stuff.

Has anyone mentioned Woodward's Gripe Water for babies? It used to contain a small amount of alcohol.

Indian brandy.

Indian brandy.

My Dad kept a bottle of that in the medicine cupboard.
It looks quite good for indigestion, I wonder why it's been discontinued?

Friars Balsam for steam inhalations.

Minadex stands out for me. I was quite a thin child, and my Mum used to worry about me. She fed me Minadex daily, I loved the orange flavour.

I forgot about Minadex .
I caught whooping cough as a child and was seriously ill -my weight plummeted and I was given Minadex .
I gave it to my children .
I thought that it was fantastic .

Yes I had whooping cough as well, I can remember now the horrible whooping sound and struggling to breathe.

My mum used to make 'onion juice' when we all had coughs, colds and sore throats. Not sure whether it had any benefits but we kids loved it and still feel nostalgic about it. Not sure of the recipe but guess it was just onions, water and sugar in a big (at the time) screw top jar.

My Dad did this when I was small. Onion cut in half, and put in dish with some (preferably brown) sugar, and the 'syrup' that developed was given to us for coughs etc. I detested it and the smell of it was almost enough to ensure I got better.

For nighttime tickly coughs, he would spoon feed us with warm milk with a dab of butter added. I detested warm milk, but really loved this attention.

Warts he tied off with some cotton, and they fell off. Chilblains he treated with some very staining yellow stuff (cannot recall the name).

Great believer in 'natural medicines' was my Dad.

Nurse Harvey’s Mixture for us!

I remember Syrup of Figs and Milk of Magnesia, and in winter I got Minadex, which I loved, and cod liver oil, which I hated.

When I got the inevitable tonsillitis my granny used to blow a disgusting yellow powder called Flowers of Sulphur on to my throat from a teaspoon.

I made "onion juice" for my children exactly as my dad used to.
Slice an onion thinly.
Add honey
Steep for 4 hours plus.
Take in teaspoons-full as needed.

Syrup of Figs and Liquid Paraffin to really get things going. Together on Fridays. Both bloody foul.
