stair lifts

My neighbour went through her Council Motorbility team,she was referred to
them by her occupational therapist and she was pleased with the result,
do not sign off for any instalation of the lift until you have it examined by
an independant expert who know's what they are looking for in the fitting
of the lift,don't accept the first price you are quoted and see if you can
have at least three estimate's.We did this when dad has his fitted years ago;

Agree with Glamma....if you can get some independent mobility advice before you start through local authority its a good idea. Apart from that we had to get one for FIL....through Stannah, very expensive but the service was excellent.

Stannah have started making an "express stair lift" -- it gets you up to the top before you forget what you were going up for.

Check on Stannah Company one of the big Companies had financial problem's
but not sure which one it was,I know the walk in bath Company went bust,
but there was also talk of other Companies

I worked for a Housing Association and they had many installed - always used Stannah never a problem.

Have double checked on Stannah it was another Company that had problem's
but better to be safe than sorry, it was about the same time a specialist
bathroom Company went bust (the walk in type)and a lot of people lost their
deposit's.

My mum had a fall recently, and after returning home from hospital the OT and myself realised my mum needed a stairlift. I decided to do some research and found there seamed to be 3 main companies, Stannah,Acorn and Age uk stairlifts, we decided to have Age uk as we liked the thought of dealing with a charity rather than a large business, and we had heard stories of pressure sales from the other companies.
We made an appointment, thier surveyor came round, who did not pressure us and informed us that the lift would be a straight stairlift called a minivator 950. This would cost £1900 and he told us this was the same price to any Age uk customer, which we liked so we purchased. The lift was fit a week later and everything was fine.
Some weeks later a neighbour of ours had a stairlift installed, I called in to have a look and found it to be the same stairlift as ours. She had purchased it from a company called Companion for £1400 brand new.
I decided to research this company and found that Companion and Age uk are run from the same building in Leeds, they are owned by a larger company called Handicare who supply them with minivator stairlifts.
So if we had called Companion we could have had the same stairlift with the same warranty fit by the same engineers for £500 less, what a con, Age uk are supposed to be helping the elderly! how does this help my mum by taking £500 more for the same product, totally disgusting, wish I had gone to Stannah.

We had a stairlift fitted in May. We contacted 3 local mobility shops, each sent a representative round to measure up and give us a quote. The first one who came was from Acorn, he measured and quoted us £2,600 for a new one, but said we could have the same model in a reconditioned version for £1,600. Then he rang his head office, and, surprise, surprise, they had a special offer on, the £2,600 one was on offer for just a couple of days at £1,850. The next rep, can`t remember where he was from, said he didn`t think that they could fit one for us, as our stairs are quite narrow, but he said that he would do the calculations when he got back to the office and let us know. We expected a phone call the same day, but 3 days later we had a letter saying that no, they couldn`t fit one. Then rep number 3 came, took one look and said straightaway that it would be impossible to fit one for us because the stairs were way too narrow. So, we contacted the Acorn man again, told him what the others had said, and he said that the reason they, Acorn, could fit one was because they make the narrowest stairlifts. Anyway, we ordered one from them, and it was fitted 3 days later. I thought the men would be here for a long time, but it was just one man, and it took him 45 minutes! And it`s been an absolute godsend! I`d been having terrible problems getting up and down stairs, mainly up, but it`s great now.

Numberplease, we also had a stair lift from Acorn and are very happy with it indeed. They even managed to fit it without taking away the handrail and we liked the fact that it is fixed on the stairs and not the lovely wood panelled wall.

Yes Hunt, we also specified that we wanted the handrail to stay, and ours is fixed to the stairs as well, makes them a bit narrow for anyone walking up, but that doesn`t happen often, so it`s OK. We actually found the Acorn rep to be very helpful and informative.

How do I find the model of a stannah stairlift I just got one second hand

hover if you google it, you'll probably find an online handbook. (Works for most things, anyway!)
