Cleaning the oven

Haven't cleaned the oven for a while (!) and it is covered in baked-on black stuff (this would be followed by a blush emoticon if I had any square brackets on my laptop). Has anybody got any tips / favourite products to suggest? I think the oven cleaner I have got has died of old age. It is a Lacanche range cooker so it doesn't self-clean (presumably on the basis that it is meant to be used by professional chefs who have lots of minions).

I have a man, probably once a year, when the smoke gets too bad!! grin

Mamie Wed 21-Mar-12 11:12:47

Does the man do France?

Oven Pride is fantastic, almost a pleasure to use. It includes a huge bag for shelves and removable parts, to which I also add my enamel baking trays. After leaving overnight all you have to do is rinse - honestly, it is that easy!

Probably, if you paid him enough. Might be cheaper to buy a new cooker though. Are there not oven cleaning services in France? We had a thread on this a while ago and I think some people suggested something from Lakeland and one, called maybe Ovenmate, which comes with a bag in which to soak the shelves. Awful job, I really hate it! In fact, I hate housework seems daft to have been a stay at home mum of five children really! confused

Crossed posts with Shysal obviously. Not Ovenmate but Oven Pride! Can I ask how it cleans the base and the grill area, doors, top etc? Is it as good on those? You can buy a lot of Oven Pride for what my man charges!

Was going to write 'we use oven mate from lakeland' and then realised that as DH cleans the oven the 'we' was a bit cheeky! I know I am very spoilt, and I'm not thinking of lending him out - sorry!

Perhaps I'll buy him some Oven Pride as a present, it sounds even easier that Oven Mate. grin

Oven Pride is great and there is no "smell" that sometimes come with products. In Annika's idea world when cooker gets dirty sling it out and buy a new cooker wink

Anagram Wed 21-Mar-12 12:37:18

Yesss...! In my world too! grin

Mamie Wed 21-Mar-12 12:38:38

Right thanks - trip to Lakeland on next visit. No oven cleaning services round here, no internet shopping, but there is a man who comes every six months with wine...
The Lacanche was 4000€, would your man and ferry crossing be cheaper Kitty?

On my old cooker which did not have self cleaning oven I used a non abrasive cleaner for the top/bottom and sides then used oven pride for the shelves. It always came up as good as new it was only when the oven died a death that I bought one with self cleaning oven but still use oven pride evry couple of months to keep the shelves pristine.Ther must surely be a "man who can" in France try one of the local restaurants and enquire who does their deep cleans which I am sure they must use for their yearly checks for their kitchen/health certificates.

Mamie I think it would be touch and go if you take into account the travelling time etc. He charges £150 for my range and takes about 3 hours, so getting to you and back, staying overnight and travelling might make it a close run thing.

kittylester Oven Pride works anywhere in the oven, you just smear it on and leave. Only one problem is that it goes on thick but then liquifies a bit, so I put newspaper beneath the door in case of drips. You will need a whole bottle for an average oven including half in bag for shelves. Don't know the price, but whatever it is it is worth it. I buy in Asda, may be cheaper in Wilkinson's.

kittylester Wed 21-Mar-12 17:27:29

Thanks shysal can you also use it on enamelled surfaces and in the bottom of a self clean oven. Please say no, or I will feel duty bound to clean the cooker myself after the budget. shock

Napalm - thats what my oven needs!

shysal Wed 21-Mar-12 19:57:15

kitty it works great on enamel, but says do not use on self cleaning parts. See the link. www.ovenpride.com/how-it-works

kittylester Wed 21-Mar-12 19:58:46

Thank you shysal - I think. grin

I put the shelves in the dishwasher. I just wish the rest of the oven would fit too!

I wipe my oven while it is still hot and if I have the odd spill I use Brillo pads (or their French equivalent).
I could not use any chemical cleaner in my vey small living room/kitchen because of the fumes.
My oven is just a table-top model so it is easy to see inside. It wouldn't take a turkey but as I live alone it suffices. (I have two hotplates, a microwave ,a toaster and a kettle, so I can manage most meals).
Mamie - I am sure the ladies at the mairie could tell you about a handyman.

My MiL used to say 'Clean oven - bad cook.'

NfkDumpling Thu 16-Aug-12 10:12:07

(didn't notice this was an old thread - was scanning through while bored on hold to Eon!)

absentgrana Thu 16-Aug-12 10:39:13

Mr absent cleans our oven using Oven Pride. Absentdaughter moves house when the oven gets too dirty. grin

Sugar soap works on enamel (you can buy it ready mixed in B&Q) but it is hard work - I am still wondering if I can be lazy and get a man in but think I would be embarrassed at the state of the cooker!! I didn't think you could use Ovenpride on enamel.
