Cleaning the oven

Haven't cleaned the oven for a while (!) and it is covered in baked-on black stuff (this would be followed by a blush emoticon if I had any square brackets on my laptop). Has anybody got any tips / favourite products to suggest? I think the oven cleaner I have got has died of old age. It is a Lacanche range cooker so it doesn't self-clean (presumably on the basis that it is meant to be used by professional chefs who have lots of minions).

When I ran out of wardrobe space I convinced DH we needed another home, overflow and seasonal clothes get stored at the other place.

harri With your imagination, you should write a book on how to save time by not doing housework. grin

Don't waste time cleaning, throw it away and get a new one grin

I put all the loose parts in the bath with soap powder over night. Job done.

At this very moment Mr absent is removing the oven door prior to cleaning it and the oven. The shelves are soaking in their plastic bag of Oven Pride. Bless.

Sorry peaches just messing about - anything really rather than clean the cooker. grin

Before the days of oven cleaners, (and in the days when I had to clean the oven) when we were marching out of army quarters every two years, we ALL soaked as many moveable bits of the oven we could find in the bath. It worked- together with Brillo pads. Good to know it still works, petallus!

BTW - new house has a gas hob (a really posh one). Haven't used one for years. L******d do hob liners - anyone tried them?

Sorry peaches just my sense of humour blush

A) I live in a bungalow
B) The bath only needs rinsing afterwards, the soap powder cleans it.

I'll think twice about posting any more hints.

Ella46 Wed 29-Aug-12 16:24:56

Then spend the next few days cleaning the bath! grin

kittylester Wed 29-Aug-12 15:39:47

Ella blush

peaches sounds like a dangerous job, carrying anything that dirty upstairs!

Cleaning shelves - Fill the bath with hot water, pour in some biological washing powder, put the shelves in and leave overnight. Next morning, wipe with cloth - all clean and shiny.

kittylester Thu 16-Aug-12 20:13:40

Annobel Thu 16-Aug-12 20:05:07

I had a new kitchen six years ago. How does on clean the oven? confused

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only person with an oven which would not stand a health & safety inspection (in fact any H&S inspector worth her salt would have to have 3 weeks off work lying in a darkened room). My mother introduced me to the very useful sentence "I haven't had so much fun since the last time I cleaned the oven" which is very useful when discussing a really awful experience.

Mishap Thu 16-Aug-12 18:10:50

I daren't tell you what my oven/s look like!
The most embarrassing bit is the cobweb between the double glass of the door!

kittylester Thu 16-Aug-12 14:27:28

Barrow if you get a man in and he says anything about the state of your oven, refer him to my man for an explanation on a really dirty ovenblush

Ariadne Thu 16-Aug-12 13:32:39

I have just cleaned my oven! Please feel free to drop in and admire it. Then I went to Lakeland at Bluewater to get one of their oven floor liners, only to find that they Lakeland) are closed for refurbishment. Boo! So there I was, in Bluewater, so of course had to have a wander round.....

I shall now revert to pre march out (Army) standard - once the oven was given the final clean, everything was lined with foil until the day we moved!

Mamie Thu 16-Aug-12 13:14:49

As I started this all those months ago, I can report that the Oven Pride worked a treat, but it needs doing again now. Can also report that there are no peripatetic oven cleaners or handypersons round here - and I am one of the ladies at the Mairie....

Barrow Thu 16-Aug-12 12:04:48

Sugar soap works on enamel (you can buy it ready mixed in B&Q) but it is hard work - I am still wondering if I can be lazy and get a man in but think I would be embarrassed at the state of the cooker!! I didn't think you could use Ovenpride on enamel.

absentgrana Thu 16-Aug-12 10:39:13

Mr absent cleans our oven using Oven Pride. Absentdaughter moves house when the oven gets too dirty. grin

NfkDumpling Thu 16-Aug-12 10:12:07

(didn't notice this was an old thread - was scanning through while bored on hold to Eon!)

NfkDumpling Thu 16-Aug-12 10:09:38

My MiL used to say 'Clean oven - bad cook.'
