Multiyork sofa dilemma

Twenty year old Multiyork sofa still structurally sound but scruffy.

The dilemma is whether we

a) throw sofa out and buy a new one
b) get it recovered at a cost of about £1000.

I just wondered what others have done or would do.

New one sounds cheaper to me!! - especially if you wait till the January sales.

I'd get a new one, unless this one is particularly comfortable and you love it!

Get another quote or buy a new one. The old one has done you good service.

petallus, Last year I bought a replacement cover for my Multiyork sofa from Lynplan for considerably less than £1,000, or you could try Plumbs. price does depend on the fabric you choose.

My MultiYork sofa cost £2,000 ten years ago so generally, if you are going to buy a sofa of a similar quality, recovering is cheaper.

Yes, FlicketyB that's what I was thinking. My sofa cost about £2000 so it would be cheaper to have it covered if I want another expensive sofa.

Wondered whether to go downmarket. John Lewis do some nice ones for just over £1000.

If I do decide to get another loose cover will try Lynplan.

I was considering having a fixed cover this time.

Incidentally, although it is a very well built sofa I probably couldn't give it away now. Same with my medium dark Ercol dresser which I bought 20 years or so ago for a fortune.

I think you should get your old one recovered. They don't make decent sofas anymore unless you spend thousands and thousands. I always regretted getting rid of my very comfortable sofa because I thought it was too expensive to recover. If you love it, keep it!

Petallus, Ercol is back in fashion. Almost all the house magazines feature. It is now highly desireable vintage furniture. My daughter sought it out when she moved house and now has a dining table and chairs and a three piece suite and other occasional furniture whch she has bought at auction sales and on ebay. I drove from Oxfordshire to Honiton to collect her 3 piece suite with her as her car was too small.

Choose your favourite fabric and have it recovered if it is still comfortable. We have a local social enterprise that does upholstery at a reasonable cost..may be worth seeing if there is anything like that near you petallus

Went to John Lewis yesterday and certainly sofas for £1000 ish seemed flimsy compared with my Multiyork one.

I'm going to investigate getting it covered whilst waiting to see what turns up in the sales in January and then make a decision.

As for Ercol furniture, I have noticed it is coming back into some shops and is still very expensive. However, it is the light finish which is popular and I have a sort of golden oak dresser.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. It's so nice to be able to get advice on Gransnet when undecided or wanting information.

petallus I sent for a quote a few years ago to Lynnplan for loose covers for my Tetrad suite , didnt buy any as we put everything into storage and decided to wait until just before we moved into the house so it had new covers. They are always sending me special offers in January with huge discounts, why ask for a price now and to look at the samples and you will probably be offered the discount in the New Year.
