Steam cleaner for carpets

I wonder if anyone has experience of buying (rather than hiring) and using a steam cleaner to clean their carpets. Is it hugely better than a normal vacuum cleaner? Can anyone recommend a make and model I should look at?

Haven't used a steam cleaner, but have a vax carpet cleaner, which does the job well. I found out that white distilled vinegar diluted with water removed stubborn stains caused by coffee drips.x

I borrow my daughter's vax cleaner when I need to clean the odd rug or carpet. It does a great job, and extracts that much water the carpets are practically dry. Very efficient.

when ditto vax seems to be very popular and gives a very good result every time,I have done my bedroom carpet and rugs twice with DDs vax and always had a really good outcome and almost dry carpets.

I have a Bissell which also heats the water to 14 deg warmer. Has done a good job on carpets and rugs and the furniture attachment works very well - cleaned a dralon velvet chair and settee a treat.

Do these vax cleaners work on lino and laminate as well?

dorsetpennt I would't use one on laminate flooring as I would be frightened of the strips warping with the liquid,I use a steam cleaner on mine twice a year the rest of the time I use a laminate cleaner from Wilko's with calomine, can't see any problem with cushion floor though ?

Brilliant. Looks like I'll be going the Vax route! Thanks for all your helpful comments.

I'm sure I can't be the only person that does this, but just in case you haven't thought of it. We make it the last thing we do before we go on holiday; the cases are literally outside the door. Then we know it has a good long time to dry out.
