White bedding

Looking forward to redecorating and I really fancy white cotton duvet covers. We've stayed at hotels and been impressed by the look and feel of their bed linen. I expect they get washed every few days though. Any tips for keeping them white and soft at home? Also any recommendations of where to buy good quality cotton bedding? Thanks

We buy cheap white bedding and put our lovely patchwork on top.

I use white bedding, Egyptian cotton from Dunelm Mills. I've never had any problems keeping it white, TBH. I have psoriasis in my scalp and often find little blood spots on the pillows where I've been scratching my head in my sleep shock, but I just put them through a hot wash, adding Oxy in with the washing liquid.
My bedroom is painted white, with white and silver wallpaper on two walls, white furniture, white lampshade and a silver grey carpet. And, of course, the all white bed. It is my sanctuary, a little haven of peace and tranquility smile.

TKMax is my favourite store for buying very good quality sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases etc. They often have plane white bed linen 'hotel' quality, i.e. very good quality cotton at half or even less of the original price. As for keeping them white and soft, I wash mine on a hot 60 wash every other time - no problems.

I'm amazed - my bedroom could never be that pristine! I actually sit on the bed to dry my hair, put makeup on etc., plus I drink tea in bed and sometimes even eat a biscuit...

I'd be forever washing white linen and life's too short. Each to their own, of course.

Have had white bed linen for years, find they look good longer, you can mix and match and you have no patterns fighting. Only wash once a week on 40 deg. I too find TK Maxx a good source and also Dawson's Department store on line. Christies seem to keep white longer, whereas anything with a bit of polyester goes creamy coloured eventually.
Your bedroom sounds lovely Indinana. I put duck egg blue throw and cushions with mine, in the futile hope of achieving a calming effect. grin

I too use white bedding always but I'm not brave enough to have a white duvet cover too, I wash at 60* now and then and the sheets and pillow cases stay white and soft. I buy mine either online or at Dunelm.

It is so much easier if everything is white cotton , it all matches!

Indinana Sun 25-Oct-15 20:55:39

Take the plunge tanith, I have white duvet covers and they just look so lovely! Always stay white. If I had tea and biscuits in bed, like Ana, then I'd probably be wary of white, but I've always hated sitting up in bed with a cup of tea - if I'm awake I'd rather get up and sit downstairs with my morning cuppa.

We have a white embroidered duvet set from M and S brought during one of their 20% off promotions. It looks and feels lovely but does need ironing.

I have white linen duvet covers from a company called Soak and Sleep. They were very reasonably priced and feel gorgeous.

I can imagine the state of my bedding if I had white duvet covers with a cat who is not afraid to jump on the bed with muddy paws and also shed her black hair.

I like white, or pastel colours in the summer. Red in the winter.

Ana Sun 25-Oct-15 22:16:34

I usually drink the tea at bedtime, Indinina, but like you I'd rather go downstairs in the morning for my first brew of the day!

I just think an all white bedroom would feel too sterile, I prefer warmer tones, but it certainly is a matter of personal taste.

I also stick to white cotton for our bed. I always have breakfast in bed, and lots of tea but the being can be washed hot so no problem. I like the look of a white bed, it's very calming.

I just love my white bedding and it keeps its looks from one week to the next. Ive had white for many years now and do love climbing into a freshly made bed which is all white. I've had breakfast, lunch and even dinner lounging about in this bed - and why? because I can and because I'm worth it. wink

I love our white bedding too. I buy it in Fenwicks sale or online from companies who specialise in bedding for hotels. One of these even managed to deliver it the next day from England to my door in rural France, which is faster than anything else I have bought. We have a wooden floor and lots of beams so the white makes a lovely contrast.

All the linen including sheets and towels is white In our house. Wash at 95 all whites. Stay white until too old. Try to buy nothing less than 400 thread count and much more if I can get them reduced as they last forever.

Well, we are all different aren't we? I like lots of colour, so no white anything for me at all!

kassi Mon 26-Oct-15 09:03:23

My bedroom is also all white too. Even my bedroom floor which is white laminate. I love it!

Cherrytree59 Mon 26-Oct-15 09:28:34

Love my white bedding . Especially now the clocks have changed it looks lovely and bright. Curtains, cushions and throw are in berry colours to give hint of colour. Nordic countries use white and pastel colours also. Anything goes with white so just by changing curtains etc. You've got whole new look!

A cautionary tale. I bought a couple of sets of good Egyptian cotton and DH hates it, says it rustles so it sits in a cupboard and doesn't get used!

shysal Mon 26-Oct-15 09:37:10

When I moved into my house, I painted the bedroom white, but hated it because it looked so cold. I therefore went back to the original colours of pale terracotta and sand, which were popular at the time, 16 years ago, with gingham/white bedding. The colour scheme went out of fashion, but I am pleased to see earthy tones are back this winter. They say that if you wait long enough you will be 'with it'. (pic is not my room, it is from bedding ad.)

Bellanonna Mon 26-Oct-15 10:07:42

Shysal , I was just about to compliment you ! Lovely pic.
Yes, white, white, white. I have lovely curtains in red and beige floral pattern with cushions to match as I thought it would look nice. I just found the cushions a nuisance so use them somewhere else. I have a Laura Ashley bedspread over the bedding, and the walls are white. Bits and bobs lying about lend enough colour contrast anyway, along with the curtains. Oddly enough the white seems to keep its whiteness and the throw doesn't seem to get dirty quickly, or at least if it does I don't see it. smile

What lovely replies. Like Luckygirl I intend to have a patchwork throw over most of the bedding. A good excuse to make patchwork quilts, maybe one for each season - nothing wrong with a bit of ambition.
The carpet will probably be taupe or whatever they call beige now. I love the calm look of hotel rooms but will keep it more personal with quilts and favourite pictures. smile
