To clean a lavatory? Pour in a can of coke cola around. Leave it for a few minutes. Result Sparkly clean grin

Precoat stove tops by using car wax. It's great to see a shine.

Oil spatters? 2 drops of mineral oil on kitchen tissue, wipe and yucky,
gloop comes right off grin

Anyone have a messy cleaning job and use a product not associated with cleaning?

For burnt saucepans just cover the burnt area with cooking salt. Leave overnight then use a sponge scourer and washing up liquid. Easy.
Not sure if it works on non stick pans as mine are stainless steel, so havent tried it on non stick.

Well thank you, how timely, I have just burnt a saucepan because I was on here too busy to keep an eye on it!

Water that potatoes have been boiled can be used to clean silverware, just leave the items in the potato water for an hour then take them out, wash and dry them - no more tarnish.

I used the strident tablets on my China mugs and they look like new. Thanks for the tip!

Bennan Thu 12-Nov-15 07:01:49

steradent tablets, stupid thing!

feetlebaum Thu 12-Nov-15 07:51:42

Olive oil can be used to clean stainless steel.

mrsmopp Thu 12-Nov-15 17:52:54

Stillhere, delighted it helped! :-)

No-one has mentioned it so maybe it's too obvious, but soda crystals are great for soaking cups and teapots - half a teaspoon then top up with boiling water for cups, works in 10 minutes, stick your teaspoons in as well and after a short soak one wipe with a cloth gets rid of stains. Soda crystals and white vinegar are great for sinks, pile up crystals in the plug hole and pour on vinegar, it all fizzes up, then pour boiling water down to clear it, gets rid of hairs and gunk and leaves the sink fresh.

Two things that help me clean the shower as I get less agile.
I spray cleaner on the tray before i shower and use a micro cloth to clean it with my feet.
Then before I rinse my scrunchie, I wipe over the shower screen with it and don't rinse. We have very hard water, and I find this easier than a squeegee and as effective.
The one I haven't solved is mould on a latex shower mat, which we need for stability. I rinse it, dry it, but still get mould inside the layers. I've tried all sorts of washing powders, stain removers, and bleach to no avail. Perhaps I should try Steradent? I just replace it every month or two.

My tip is cheap make-up remover wipes. they remove marks on walls, wallpaper, material, upholstery, carpets and so on.I even keep some in the car so that when I am waiting to collect my grand-daughter from school I can clean the dashboard and all the other accessible bits of car, including the passenger seat

Charleygirl Tue 17-Nov-15 12:48:47

allule my latex shower mats wear out- I have never had a problem with mould and I also live in a hard water area. I also rinse it after each shower and place it on the stool I have inside the shower and next day once it has stopped dripping I hang it over the shower. Are you placing it on the base of the shower after cleaning?

Welshwife Tue 17-Nov-15 13:40:13

Have not read through all the tips but one I was given a few days ago and have tried is baby wipes or household cleaning wipes to clean the glass of a wood burning stove - this is usually a horrible hard job - but the cleaning wipes worked a treat - just used a few to get it all sparkling. grin

aggie Tue 17-Nov-15 14:09:43

I use damp newspaper on the glass of my stove , the trick is to get it when it is slightly warm , not hot , then the paper can go in the fire

Daisyanswerdo Tue 17-Nov-15 22:48:47

Thank you Scooter58. I've only just seen your message. I admit I haven't looked in all the possible shops. I don't think we've got a Home Bargains though.

allule Wed 18-Nov-15 10:37:29

Charleygirl...Ah..I have just looked again, and what I have is a 'latex-free' shower mat! Perhaps this is the problem.
I don't really mind what it is made of, but need one that is really squishy, as my husband has lost feeling in his feet and sense of balance.
I am now trying the Aqua rug from easy life, which seems promising, though the suction pads aren't as good.

Charleygirl Wed 18-Nov-15 11:10:41

allule maybe buying a stool for your OH may help. I would have problems if I did not have one in mine.

mrsmopp Wed 18-Nov-15 14:33:19

How do you clean a greasy cooker hood though - it's such a yucky job & I hate doing it. Any tips?

rosequartz Wed 18-Nov-15 20:24:06

I confess that I use a proprietary cleaner such as Mr Muscle or Flash for that yucky job, and a new filter every so often.

It's the oven I hate cleaning, I may even get someone in next time .....

Milton is good for removing stains as well (in cups etc)

allule Thu 19-Nov-15 13:24:37

Charleygirl. He tried a stool, but it took up too much room. We have grip rails all round, which help. Thanks for your interest.

Another tip for getting tea stains off the insides of cups is to rub the stains with soil from the garden, then wash well.
Something my MIL told me years ago, and which I still do, is to put a drop of bleach in my washing up water, it keeps dishcloths clean and fresh. She also used to use up her old knickers as dishcloths, but that one I haven`t done!

annodomini Thu 19-Nov-15 18:23:39

If soil from the garden works to remove stains from china, surely any abrasive cleaner would also work. I swear by Barkeeper's Friend (mildly abraisve) for removin stains on cups, worktops, hob and just about any other hard surface.

mrsmopp Fri 20-Nov-15 18:17:33

Numberplease,
I have to ask, did she also make knickers out of old dishcloths too?
Wasn't it called Make Do and Mend?
[hmmm]
