That the best way to clean them is with a large dish of boiling water, containing 2 or 3 chopped lemons with the juice squeezed into it, then put the oven on maximum temperature for about 45 minutes. shock

Apparently you should then just be able to wipe it clean without too much elbow grease.

I haven't tried this myself, but will mention it to Mr P, (oven cleaner extrordinaire) who usually favours Oven Pride.

I'm guessing, when I use the method in the microwave it's the juice that's cleansing and the lemon skin just masks, kills food smells Charleygirl.

rosesarered it is probably the same franchise! This post has reminded me that it needs to be done again, thanks phoenix. I hope that the fellow managed to repair your oven and that the bill was not too horrendous.

KatyK Fri 20-Nov-15 10:32:33

Oops sorry phoenix . Note to self - read the title properly blush

Oven working fine now, Charleygirl!

No idea what the bill will be, the same local independent firm came to fix the washing machine a few weeks back and I'm still waiting for the invoice for that!

They have a good reputation, have been trading for years, and also sell new and second hand appliances.

What I like about them is that they do try to fix things, rather than do the intake of breath, tell you the appliance has done well, but isn't it time you thought about a new one?

Actually, I'm slightly disappointed, I never did like the oven and had been having a look on line at new ones, but as the one I had earmarked was £250 (not expensive by todays standards) I'm pretty sure that mending was the better option financially!

To those who mentioned also having dirty oven shelves - yes mine get filthy, but Oven Pride includes a giant zip-lock poly bag in which to put them with some of the liquid. Turn every which way a few times and leave overnight, then next morning all they need is a wash and they are sparkling. I also include my enamel baking trays in the bag and they come up a treat too. Almost a joy to do!

JamJar1 Fri 20-Nov-15 15:49:20

It's getting harder to find people who fix things, well it is round here but I do try especially with larger appliances. All that land waste. sad
The TV repairman was a regular visitor to our house when I was growing up. I was fascinated by all the paraphernalia to be found in the back of our television.

Almost a joy to do!
Almost, but not quite shysal!

(yes, it is good, why do I put off doing it?)

Elrel Fri 20-Nov-15 20:58:37

I didn't know the double glass doors could be unscrewed, Grandma2213!

Grandma2213 Sat 21-Nov-15 00:27:39

elegran a sliding glass door sounds much more sensible. Elrel I live in fear of losing the screws and the little metal pieces that hold the glass in place! This is the most stupid design I have ever seen. There is a small top oven (or grill) and the larger bottom oven. Both have gaps between the glass panels at the top of the doors so splashes get down in between the glass plates.

daffydil I did buy liners for both ovens but did not realise that the one in the small oven would smoke and disintegrate when I used the grill function!

shysal I might try the oven pride zip lock bags if they are not too expensive. Can they be used more than once? And where can you buy them?

Stansgran Sat 21-Nov-15 09:42:40

Lakeland do oven pride . I just put the shelves in the dishwasher and take them out before they are completely dry as then any grunge still on is soft and rubs off.

queenMab99 Thu 10-Dec-15 13:30:39

I don't clean mine at all, the heat will kill any germs.

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 15:23:34

Must be pretty stinky though queenMab99

Galen Thu 10-Dec-15 15:35:53

How often should I clean my oven? It probably gets used 2-3 times a year?

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 15:38:31

I wouldn't bother if I were you Galen 2-3 times a year is less than a weeks worth of use in my house !

Marieeliz Fri 11-Dec-15 11:35:53

How do you keep your oven liner from blowing around the bottom in a fan oven?

miep Fri 11-Dec-15 11:36:40

Oven Pide comes in a box with the ziplock bag, bottle of cleaner and gloves. Brilliant stuff. HHome Bargains have oven liners for 49p and they work just as well as the more expensive ones so you can change them frequently.

FinnMcCool Fri 11-Dec-15 11:52:21

I put my oven shelves in the dishwasher once, and they went all sort of dull. Its like the chrome shine has been washed off.
It bothers me slightly, but since no one sees them I try not to notice myself.

Hellebore Fri 11-Dec-15 12:57:01

I use one lemon in a basin of water to clean microwave. I'm not absolutely sure the lemon is necessary, I think the hot steam on its own is enough to loosen the grime. I wipe it out with a microfibre cloth. That said I don't cook anything messy in my microwave so it never gets really dirty. The lemon makes the kitchen smell nice though.
Regarding the main oven, I use one of those kits that comes with a huge plastic bag to put shelves/ trays in. I don't put all the solution on the bag and use this to do the inside of the oven itself. It's important to keep turning the bag during the soak to make sure all bits are done. It works like a dream with the minimum of effort. I do this about every three months, if I leave it longer than that the oven smells when it's on, I think it's the residual fat from roasts that causes this.

Last week there was a discussion on cleaning carpets and I then felt compelled to drag the VAX carpet cleaner out and do my sitting room and hall.

Today it's ovens. My afternoon is now completely spoiled as I now know what I have to do... Grrr!

Can anyone start a thread about sitting eating cream buns and reading a book?

Candelle Fri 11-Dec-15 13:45:03

I should perhaps mention that when I do clean the oven I use 'Oven Mate' from Lakeland. This is a liquid in a bottle which is painted on with a brush. One leaves it on until it turns from clear to brown in colour, then wipe it off. It is quite effective but of course won't work between those blessed glass shelves (designed by a man who never cooks?).

I have tried using my 'self-cleaning' oven setting but it was not very effective. I certainly wouldn't pay more for an oven with this function, were I choosing another.

I tried the lemon with water in the microwave but that was not particularly good either. Perhaps it is something I am not doing correctly?

pennturner Fri 11-Dec-15 14:34:06

The oven cleaning instruction for my rayburn is to sweep out any bits from the oven floor the rest is self cleaning! Mostly I use a remoska when it is not lit in warm weather so no oven cleaning here.

MaggieKnockater Fri 11-Dec-15 14:58:14

My oven's about the same age as yours, annodomini, and I have tried to use the self-cleaning function - it wouldn't get up to temp and said it was too dirty! I can still see in through the glass door (just).
Manufacturer's instructions say warm soapy water and a microcloth - what planet are they on?

annodomini Fri 11-Dec-15 15:14:30

Mine did get to the right temp and the sides of the oven are fine, but then I don't roast meat in it so don't get much spattering which is probably why the oven is reasonably clean to begin with. However, the glass door is another matter. I don't know why it's so badly stained.

Hellebore Fri 11-Dec-15 15:16:43

I swore by this product until I found the Oven Pride which is must easier to use and just as good if not better. Better still it is much cheaper and no p&p x

pattie Fri 11-Dec-15 18:35:56

Can't say I lose too much sleep over the state of my oven. Did try the cleaner sold in aldis it was good but prefer the alternative is getting a man in. He charges £50 once every two years bliss.
