Do you iron your sheets?

I am sitting here with a pile of ironing - yes, that would be on a Saturday night - and wondering why I am ironing the bedsheets. Am feeling rebellious (this is what two glasses of red wine does to one). Does it really matter? Does anyone else bother ironing duvet covers and sheets or do you just put them on all wrinkly?

Why would anyone want to iron bedclothes, it's as bad and useles as ironing tea towels and towels. Stop it, find something fun to do instead. Read a book, go for a walk, play with the grandchildren. Stop ironing.

I actually love ironing - although arthritic hands have made it more difficult. It's one household chore that I can relax into, especially if listening to my favourite radio programs all the while.
I would happily do everyone's ironing, if only they would come and do my vacuum cleaning for me. That's the job I hate the most, and tho' my sheets are pristine and crisp, my carpets look decidedly uncared for!

Yes, bedlinen always ironed! Would have fresh ironed bed linen every day if I could afford it! grin

gulligranny Sun 29-Nov-15 16:07:08

I too really enjoy ironing and like mrshat I'd love to have fresh bedlinen every day (roll on that Euromillions win and the live-in housekeeper).

I just wonder why people such as Bothiegran2013 and various other posters on here seem to think that just because some of us like to iron, we don't have enjoyable, fullfilling lives! I iron in front of "Homes Under the Hammer"(a guilty pleasure) a couple of times a week, which then leaves me free for the rest of the day to go out for coffee/lunch with friends, etc. etc. I look after grandchildren one day a week, I love to cook, read, go to the cinema, go for long walks .... and I like ironing.

Now housework, that's a whole different ballgame, which is why I agree with Nannanoo and I'm looking forward to the live-in housekeeper!

Used to have a friend who ironed nappies back in the day

Clematisa Sun 29-Nov-15 16:32:43

I iron my sheets and pillowcases (and sometimes my knickers too, lol!) I just love the feel and smell of freshly ironed sheets! And I do it to whatever is on at the time including Homes under The Hammer or some great music - I set my timer for 15 minutes and see how many I can do each time before the timer goes off! And I still have time for coffee or lunch and various other good things...

I never iron a thing

DADDYBEAR Sun 29-Nov-15 17:08:03

yes, it feels so nice when they are ironed

Conni7 Sun 29-Nov-15 17:35:20

I take my sheets to the laundry, so they do get ironed. Haven't ironed anything else for years.

Wheniwasyourage Sun 29-Nov-15 17:37:52

Never iron sheets or duvet covers, even for visitors, but I do iron pillowcases, shirts/blouses, trousers except for Rohans and tea towels (when I was Brownie I was told that you could use a clean tea towel to stop bleeding, and that it would be extra clean because it had been ironed, and so I still feel I should iron them - I have, touch wood, never used one for that purpose, it must be admitted hmm).

Has anyone else found that if you read through this thread, the word "iron" looks increasingly bizarre?

mollyc Sun 29-Nov-15 17:44:31

I never iron polycotton sheets and douvets but do iron pure cotton ones.

Evertheoptimist Sun 29-Nov-15 17:45:52

I iron a lot of things - I hate wrinkly clothes and an untidy bed. Doesn't take long if do it regularly and I certainly have a lot of time for other activities!

pooohbear2811 Sun 29-Nov-15 17:49:39

I iron clothes, and I iron my uniform for work, but I do not and will never iron bedding. Really do not see the point. Buy a darker colour pattered cover and it does not show the creases

Penstemmon Sun 29-Nov-15 17:53:37

If I manage to do the washing I don't need to do much ironing as I take care hanging/folding etc. but DH often steps in to 'be helpful' and washes all sorts together, wrong temperature, never pre-treats and then hangs it all in odd ways without stretching/shaking out creases . He then treats the dry creased clothes like cut glass laying it all out, tenderly ut unfolded on top of each other so they crumple beautifully. I have tried explaining about folding things whilst still damp etc. but he know what he's doing!! He does not need my advice!!

I think some things really need to be ironed, for comfort. Not so bad if they've had a good blow on the line, but drying on the pulley can leave laundry a bit stiff. I find ironing quite therapeutic. .

I iron pillowcases, but duvet covers and sheets just get folded and ironed on each side of the folds.
My sister-in-law many years ago used to iron everything, even socks and baby`s nappies. My daughters tell me off for ironing knickers!

Iam64 Sun 29-Nov-15 18:31:42

My mother was an inspiration. She taught me how to pull, shake and fold sheets (same applies to pillow cases, duvet covers etc) and then give the folded sheet a good stroking over. In her world, this eliminated the need to iron them - thanks mum x

Well said gulligranny! I only have white 100% cotton or linen blend bedding. I iron it because it looks nicer and feels great and gives me pleasure. I'd agree polycotton bedding probably can get away without being ironed. How strange that the pleasure I and others get from wearing ironed clothes is regarded by some as not having a life. I bet some of you spend time doing things us ironers would consider a waste of time. Each to their own I say, as long as it's legal and doesn't frighten the horses.

missislippy Sun 29-Nov-15 19:04:07

No, I've never ironed sheets or duvet covers (unless for the guest bed) and I only iron pillowcases on the "sleeping" side..... I've always thought that only my husband and I would see the wrinkles, and even if I ironed them, as soon as we got into bed they'd be wrinkled again! I don't iron anything that won't be seen. And since I got my "Dry Buddy" I can hang jumpers on hangers to dry in there and put them straight in the wardrobe. grin

Jayh Sun 29-Nov-15 19:21:22

I do too. I love getting into a fresh bed with smooth cotton sheets. I don't iron much else unless there is a good reason to ( don't often think of good reasons). ?

Maggiemaybe Sun 29-Nov-15 19:33:21

i haven't ironed for years. In fact, I can't imagine why I ever did it in the first place. Mind you, I used to do my ironing stint in front of the Eastenders omnibus on a Sunday, and I can't imagine now why I used to watch that either!

Sarahsue35 Sun 29-Nov-15 19:40:10

Yes I iron my bedding as they are Egyptian cotton and crease very easy x

Sadiesnan Sun 29-Nov-15 20:09:37

I never iron, never. My husband irons his own stuff and if I buy anything for me that needs ironing, it's a mistake and I end up sending it to the PDSA.

Theoddbird Sun 29-Nov-15 20:27:24

I never iron bedding. I do iron my cotton skirts and cotton cardigans.

Marmight Sun 29-Nov-15 20:42:51

I ironed a king size duvet cover today because someone else washed it and folded crumpled it. I quite like ironing but I do have a press type iron which makes life easier .....
