I am fed up having to raise my voice and /or turn up the radio while my kettle is boiling. Does anyone know of a make of kettle which is 'quiet' while boiling.

Slightly off piste I know but, talking of volume, is anyone else driven mad by the change of volume on the radio? I'm an insomniac and often have the radio on (quietly) during the night-DH being deaf so hears v little when his hearing aids are out BUT the change in the volume between items drives me mad. And then there are the loud Big Ben chimes, why do we need that at midnight for goodness sake? And then, suddenly, when we go from Radio 4 to World Service do we suddenly have the national anthem (Don't get me started on that!). If I keep it too low i can barely hear the progs but if it's turned up a tiny bit, the in between items blare out and if perchance I've just nodded off it wakes me up! Grrr!

Yes Newquay, I am with you on the World Service! Some of the "jingles" are mega loud!

We have one that is more like an urn so instant water on tap.fairly expensive initial outlay though some traditional kettles can cost similar.wonderful for instant drinks day and night as we keep it on 24/7.
We wouldn't be without it now!

I have a small Kenwood kettle that only takes 2 cupfulls, so it's economical. I fill it from the filter jug. It boils quickly so is not too much of a nuisance. Then I fill it ready for next time.

Do any of you have a Teasmade?
You don't need an alarm clock ,it would wake up a whole house.

My friend has just had a new kitchen installed and treated herself to a boiling water tap. It's brilliant - instant cuppas! Quite expensive but something to think about if you're having kitchen done.

"I have a small Kenwood kettle that only takes 2 cupfulls, so it's economical."

The cost of boiling water is determined by the amount you're boiling and the temperature it starts from, not the kettle size. A mug of water costs about 0.3p to boil, but it just takes longer to boil in a smaller kettle, nearly four times longer if it's like this one.

Isn't that just because it's only 650 watts though?

Isn't what because it's only 650W? Yes, the small kettle will take about four times longer to boil because it's lower power, but there's no economy in using the smaller kettle because the energy you pay for is the same. Maggie was saying that her kettle is economical and boils quickly, neither of which is the case by comparison with a larger one. (It is uneconomical to boil two cups when you only need one, but there are large kettles that will boil a single cup nowadays.)

The fact that it takes four times longer to boil in the kettle you gave a link to, of course.

I've gone back to a gas kettle, along with a whistle! Lovely, takes me back a few years which is just what I needed.
