I'm looking to buy a mattress topper to firm up the mattress on our spare bed. D is a temporary long term occupant of the spare room and says the mattress is too soft.
Any recommendations and experiences of whether this will work, or do I need to replace the mattress ? thanks

I think we have had a thread on this but I can say that Dunelm have a large selection. I can't comment on the choice, I've only noticed them while walking through.

Matresses toppers won't make the mattress any firmer.

Have you tried putting a board under the mattress. My mother did this when she had back trouble years ago.
We had a mattress topper. I really don't think they have much to recommend them.

ninathenana Mon 14-Mar-16 18:23:42

Anya all the blurb I read says if you buy the right one it will. I am sceptical though, hence the thread smile
I will go do a GN search but we know how fruitless that can be grin

I love my Octospring topper, but I bought it to add softness when I had tender hips, which are now a thing of the past. I have not heard of a firm one.
I hope you find something suitable.

Nina if you go onto forums "house and home" try page 5. There are some comments on there.

I needed a new mattress in a hurry. Something medium/firm. All the big bed people had a 2 week wait. I found a Which Best Buy double mattress from Argos, available for next day delivery or same day pick up for £200. I was dubious as I usually pay a lot more.

But it's the best mattress I've ever had. If you want I can tell you the brand.

We got a cheap one for our spare bed Anya about £250. I tried it out and have used it ever since. It is quite firm and of the " no turn type".
Maybe won't last as long but hey maybe I won't either.

Well, H has decided we're buying a new single bed and mattress as he retreats to that room when he can't sleep. When it's not occupied by D grin
Thanks anyway.

My first mattress topper was sheepskin, and it was just glorious in winter, but too hot in summer. I have since heard that I should have turned it face/fleecy side down in the warmer months. I then bought a microfibre topper which is like sleeping on a cloud; told a friend how wonderful it was, and she went out and bought a duvet very cheap in Sainsbury's and swears by it (used as a topper, beneath the bottom sheet). Anyone dubious about a topper could do a test run with a duvet under their bottom sheet for a night or two to see if they like the sensation.

Without a doubt, a topper is one of the best things I have ever bought/used. Remember the dictum, "Have the best shoes and the most comfortable bed you can afford, since if you're not in one, you're in the other".

Night night.

Ikea do good mattress toppers

Hey Ann I know what you mean! Those 'lifetime guarantees' just don't have the same value as they once did grin

A lot of 'bed' threads today of one sort ir another!

Victoria08 Tue 15-Mar-16 14:05:23

I have commented on this thread before.

I recently bought a topper from dunelm mill store.
It was their own brand.
When I unwrapped it, I noticed a strong chemical smell.
On reading the instruction leaflet, it said that the odour would disappear in time.
I persevered, although I found the smell a bit unpleasant.

I must say, the odour did eventually disappear, but it took a long time.
Was reluctant to take it back as it is comfortable.

Another thing is, the sheets won't stay put. Even bought a larger size, but it slips off on one side of the bed.

Anyone else had those problems.

You can get 'deeper' sheets from Dunelm

Havent rft but DD2 swears they make beds in grotty student lodgings bearable

I bought a 4inch one, allegedly hotel quality, whatever that means, through group on. Took a bit of getting used to as it is very squashy. Mattress underneath is rock hard and was finding my hips ached if I slept on my side. Now happy with it, but, yes, sheets do slip. Will look into those deeper sheets someone mentioned. So thanks!

Irenelily Tue 15-Mar-16 18:30:24

Hi Ninathenana, I bought some recently, two from Memoryfoamwarehouse and one for a 2ft6 bed a company through Amazon - make sure you get Coolmax which stops you being hot in bed! Also they ad hardly any smell which soon went away befor it was put on the bed. Very happy with all ours. Only slight problem one person sleeping alone in a double bed, tossing and turning(!) found it moved to one side a little. When I get time I shall sew on tapes! Some companies sell them with tapes, I've discovered. Have a look online! Good luck

Hi. I bought the deeper sheet from dunelm mills, but it slips.
I think it's something that happens with these toppers.
Mine came with elasticated straps at either side, so doesn't slip around. The mattress topper, that is.

The best deep sheets I've found are from Belledorm. 200 thread count, 18 inch box depth.
They tuck right under the mattress and never slip. Not ever.

Just noticed this thread. I bought a topper yesterday. Super King 'Rebound' from Dunelm - the best £39.99 I have spent. It's like sleeping on a cloud. I was tempted with a far more expensive John Lewis one but decided to have a look in Dunelm first - thankfully. I don't sleep well but had the best night's sleep in ages and didn't get out of bed until after 9 this morning - hurrah!

Armida40. No one can answer your question, only you would know why you need a mattress topper. (if in fact you do)
I wanted one because my physical condition changed. I developed bursitis on both hips and could not sleep on the firm mattress we had. I would still choose a firm mattress as it supports my back, but would need the softer top layer that a topper gives. I'm sure others have their own reasons for deciding to add a topper.
