Having just read the post about a new airing cupboard, i am jealous.envy, not that we need an airing cupboard, but a divided under stairs cupboard would be good. My DH is not a DIYer, but a long time ago I marked a line down the wall in the hall where the door could go. He painted over it nuff said. I had seen what the neighbours had done, and thought we could have the same. I am still waiting, patiently hmm

I would love some ideas for a door to hide my vacuum cleaner etc. under my stairs. Presently there is a 8" wide cupboard which has all the meters in. I keep the vacuum cleaner and a couple of boxes to keep other things at the front of that small cupboard but they are all on show. Has anyone made folding doors or does anyone know of a firm him does folding doors so I could keep things out of sight.

Numberplease I'm sorry to hear that both of you have health problems. It is important to have an accessible loo. Perhaps you should approach your local council and ask for advice about adapting your home if moving to a flat or bungalow is out of the question.

There are grants available and an expert may see possibilities that your plumber didn't think of.Try googling www.disabilityrightsuk.org/housing-grants

Good luck

We've lived in this place over over 4 years now and have two cupboards in the hallway. My oh calls one the cupboard under the stairs if I ask where such and such is - we live in a bungalow now !

My understair cupboard is used for stacking the recycling boxes, and where the Dyson lives as well as brooms, wellies and paint tins. A very useful space.

Badenkate, the Collins dictionary definition of glory hole is cupboard filled with untidy miscellaneous items. I think the new definition is one of those annoying cases where an innocuous, innocent and usefully descriptive word has been hijacked by dubious sources to refer to something objectionable. I will have to think of a new name for my messy cupboard. 'gloriously untidy space housing a miscellaneous collection of possessions'?

I wish I had an under-stairs cupboard. It's a former miner's cottage and under the stairs there's a small cellar which at one time must have been the coal hole as there was an outside wall there - the kitchen is an extension. In that cellar my freezer lives plus anything I want to see the back of. shock

Here in the frozen north it's a bowelly hole.

Haven't read ft threadauntieflo but why not DIY or get someone in?

Auntieflo Thu 02-Jun-16 17:57:03

We probably will, eventually. smileThe coffers have to recover from a new bathroom, revamped cloakroom and whole house re-paint this year so far. I used to do a lot of DIY, and enjoy it, but age galloped up on me apace, and DH is not a DIY er, and the workman of choice, is in high demand. I still live in hopes though.

When I buy things for Birthday/Christmas presents throughout the year it goes 'under the stairs' along with shoes, bags and other -junk- items! Great, but so hard to reach when I do want something! Plus getting back up from kneeling down is FAR harder these days there's a lot of grunting and groaning when that happens I can tell you!!
