How do I get rid of flies?

For some reason over the last week or so I've had an influx of great big fat flies - the big lethargic ones that don't seem to be bothered about you being near or swatting at them. They seem to be pairing up and I'll find them squatting on my kitchen window, then another couple next to my dining room table. Even in my downstairs loo! My house is clean, I rarely have any food out and surfaces are wiped etc. They are just so disgusting and I'm terrified one of them is going to lay eggs somewhere... What do I do to get rid of them? Is anyone else similarly plagued this year?

Thank you John for that very useful information.
However, I think it's a bit late, the cold weather has killed them off.

How horrible. We used to have alot when we had sheep in the field at the back, not so much now. At peak times I had two fly papers( Yes I know they are disgusting, but the do work...it wasn't much fun though when I was taking one down and it dropped onto our LONG HAIRED cat...what a job we had, and she hated me after that for about two weeks poor thing.

Other than that just keep on top of them so to speak, Tansy is said to help deter them not sure if it works though, and be very vigilant in keeping everything edible covered, and wipe tops more often than usual. You should have rid of them soon, good luck

I like the sound of the chain male curtain! auntieflo grin
Only most males I know are pretty useless at swatting flies.
Chain MAIL might work however ?

I ask them to leave. Mad, I know, but it seems to work somehow. I also had fruit flies and bought an electric swatter bat thing but by the time I had got it, they had gone. Another one for fruit flies is vinegar in a small pot, it attracts them.
