Single beds double duvets

We've got rid of our king size double and bought 2 single beds as sleeping was proving very difficult for me. This has made a huge difference to me and glad we took the plunge.

However, I had to buy bed linen fast to go on the new beds so bought single duvets and covers from Linen Direct. Couple of things, I am not overly impressed with the quality of the covers as they need pressing...eek before use, so we intended to redecorate the room next year so will buy new.

This is the question/s:
If I were to buy double duvets would they be suitable for single beds, or would they drag on the floor?
I am also considering buying sheets to go under the duvets should they be double or single do you think?
The bottom fitted sheets I have, does not keep in place particularly well, not sure if again it is the quality, or should I go for a flat sheet instead of fitted?

Sorry lots of questions, hope to get answers to some at least.

You could only use that duvet cover for a week or so in a year though - a waste of money!

My thoughts exactly Jalima.

On the single bed/double duvet issue, shouldn't a quilt be regularly "fluffed up" to introduce air between the pockets and isn't it difficult to do that when the edges are hanging right down and weighing down the "body" of the quilt?

I have Christmas bedding, lovely and warm. I have a king size quilt on a double bed but I also use a teddy bear blanket from Dunelm or ebay as a bottom sheet, along with a teddy bear pillowcase, wonderfully warm and snuggly. I have a memory foam topper and a leg support in memory foam to help the water retention in my feet and legs. The support goes under the topper and then the blanket and it is extremely comfortable.

I have a double bed, just me - and double duvet 4.5 tog, which I only use in the winter. Too warm for me in summer when I just have a throw. Fitted sheet on mattress (deep one) and a flat sheet under duvet or throw, just tucked in at bottom. Often in the summer months I will push aside that throw and just have the sheet. That gets changed weekly along with pillowcase on pillow I sleep on. Duvet cover only gets changed every few weeks.

I have an electric bed which is great and have found it easy to get the deep fitted sheets on line
