New Car - would you be angry?

When I have collected my last 2 new cars they have been outside BUT you are asked to check external condition before you drive it away to make sure bodywork etc is undamaged - not easy in rain so I have some sympathy. Until all paperwork is complete & Salesman has given you the keys you are not allowed to drive it - certainly not from inside Showroom!!!! I think that is the issue here - there should be some-where undercover to inspect a car on a wet day but that is not always possible.

I would not worry about it .I live in Surrey and in Walton there is an Austin Martin Show room with a lot of Austin Martin in the forecourt with no protection against the rain ect ... The car cost between £80000 to £130000 .. I enquired once with the show room ( I was pleased that they thought I could buy one of them ..... ) and was told it was ok .. so dont worry and enjoy your new car ...

It should have been undercover. One does not want to get into a new car soaking wet. Glad they took it into the showroom at your request.

I decided to lease a car this year instead of buying a 2nd hand one again & when I got to showroom it was under a wrap indoors & they made a big show of pulling the wrapping off. There was a big bouquet of flowers for me in it too.
I was really touched & I felt they treated me very nicely indeed.
It was not a hugely expensive car & only the 2nd brand new car I've ever had.
I also got (get) regular calls from the garage to make sure I am happy with it- which I REALLY am! It was the first sale the sales man (well boy!) had made & he was so chuffed.
It made me feel special & didn't cost them that much to do so- yes- I do think if you are spending £20,000 you should get excellent service. My car new would have been worth less than half that.

Do you not intend to drive it when its raining no then? Keep it wrapped up and cosy in a garage to ogle at?! Please leave it outside for us mere mortals to look at in envy!

I can understand you being disappointed. I have only recently been able to afford new cars and both times the garage has had the car ready in the showroom covered with a silver drape to be uncovered at the handover time. This Showed that they understood it was an occasion - which it was.

In this 21st century customer service has had a boost. Most companies are keen to give good service and those that don't are asking to lose custom.

It seems that this car dealer does not care so I would avoid it and maybe even the brand of car. There is no call for any red carpet treatment but any buyer can reasonably expect to have the opportunity to examine their purchase before paying and leaving. To put customers at a disadvantage due to the rain is very poor customer service. I would complain to senior management and expect some compensation.

I really think you are all missing the point here. Firstly when picking up a new car it is essential to check for bumps, scratches etc BEFORE you take it home. Doing this check in the rain is impossible to see any marks/damage that could have been done to your car. Once you take it home and off the garage forcourst any damage that may have been missed becomes your problem. So I quite agree with OP that it IS reasonable to ask for it to be brought indoors so that it can be checked throughly. The price of the car is irrelevant in my opinion. Also I am appalled that some posters have been rude enough to comment on world problems and poverty. What has that got to do with anything.

Some of the rude comments about a new car are due to people's misconceptions, Boosgran. Maybe their circumstances are different, but they shouldn't criticise others.

I am still working and move in circles where I need a car befitting my status. Sometimes, depending on where you live and the wealth, it is necessary to show that you are successful and smart.

I'm not sure I agree with you, Lillie. 'A car befitting my status' leaves me cold. If people drive posh cars I do not think they are successful and smart. I am impressed if they do a good job whatever their paid work is or if they show kindness. I am more impressed with people who decide not to run a car for ecological reasons. I know this isn't an option for a lot of folk however.I think it is sometimes a matter of self esteem and people with low self esteem may need to try and boost this with smart clothes or cars or name dropping.

I can see the bumps and scratches on my car when it's in the rain and even when it's muddy, which it is at this time of year most of the time (I live in a muddy place), so I'm not quite sure I understand why such things wouldn't be visible on a new car in the rain.

I don't disagree that it would have been preferable to be able to inspect it in a sheltered from rain space.

Although HM does have a chauffeur I think she would much prefer to be driving her Landrover herself through the mud and rain, wearing her headscarf with a few smelly corgis in the back. I don't think she cares too much about status but has to put up with having it bestowed upon her.

Interesting comment, mumofmadboys. I would hope I do show kindness in my job, but, and this is mainly in the business world, a succesful image is important.
I agree about using alternative transport to the car for ecological reasons and we only have the one vehicle these days, (relying on the tube and taxis at other times.)

I wasn't getting at you personally Lillie. I can see perhaps in the business world image is more important. I was a GP and always drove small second hand cars. Perhaps I got fed up with male colleagues driving posh OTT vehicles! Personal number plates are a pet dislike!!

I think that concerning Aleppo and how so many of us feel after hearing the news that we really can't understand getting upset that a new car is standing out in the rain.
Its only ever an object and our thoughta are with people and especially children.

No worries mumofmadboys, I would be more than happy to know my GP drove an old banger, but if I turn up at the private hospital I kind of expect to see expensive new cars in the consultants' parking spaces but I'm not quite sure why I think like that??!

I remember when we bought a large (nearly new) Volvo many years ago, the person who sold it to us said that we would be able to park it amongst Rolls Royces, Daimlers etc and hold our heads up high

Sorry I disagree. Marks and bumps can be missed in the rain. We bought our daughter a small car a few years ago and it was outside in the pouring rain on the forecourt. We did inspect it and it looked ok. Next day when it had dried off there was a small bump on the bonnet that was not visable when car was covered in blobs of rain.
