I was listening to the radio and there had been a survey about how often do you wash your bed linen. I was shocked at the results as the majority of single men wash their bed linen four times a year!! the majority of single women wash theres every 3-4 weeks.
Im single and do mine every week and my mother was the same. Am I a clean freak grin

Greenfinch -i have slept naked from about 20 years old. Sometimes i have to wear bed socks tho!

That was to Juney64

Leave a pile of clean sheets in their bedroom and let them do it themselves?

What horrifies me in such frequent sheet-changing is the amount of fuel used to heat the water to wash all that bedding and then power the tumbledryer to get them dry in our cold damp winters. When we should be using less power wherever we can, it really is ridiculous to waste it on unnecessary luxuries - and that is what it is. Surely no healthy person is sweaty and dirty enough to need fresh bed-linen daily?

Once I saw a tv program showing us how much skin we shed in a week. A lot, it really ' grossed me out' , so I change weekly , towels the same.

Many years ago before showers and constant hot water one had a weekly bath and a daily wash - bed linen needed changing weekly. Nowadays with showers every morning and baths nightly maybe aweekly change of sheets not totally necessary?? Of course it depends on what you get up to in your bed!!
Ideally i would live clean bed linen every day -it's one of the joys of cruising!

On the same sort of subject - a relative of mine complains if she books into a hotel and the pillows are not brand new (not just clean but in their wrapping). She couldn't believe that it had never occurred to me. Am I alone?

Elegran, I stayed with my Son and DIL last week in Barcelona and my DIL changed the bedding every day.

They're coming to stay with me in February and I've got a doze of the 'frights'. The idea of changing my bedding every day isn't one I'm looking forward to.

Greenfinch Wed 14-Dec-16 12:45:28

There is no answer to all that !!!

If I could afford it and had someone to do it for me I'd have clean bedding every day. As it is I do the bedding on a Friday and towels twice a week (quick wash with a splash of Dettol laundry stuff to nuke any nasties).

I don't know about the queen but the queen mother used to have her bedding changed several times a day. The maids would change the bedding in the morning then she'd have a nap in the afternoon and the bedding had to be changed again so she could go to bed at night with clean bedding. The servants also had to wear special shoes if they were working near her room when she was having a nap so that they didn't disturb her.

When we lived abroad and had house help, we had clean sheets every day. It was lovely but. I stopped him from doing that because of water shortages. It felt wrong to be gaily using a scarce resource on bedding.

Now, our bed gets changed about every ten days. Sometimes I change just the sheet in between full changes. Towels get changed every three/four days. Cloakroom gets a clean towel daily and we get through several in the kitchen every day as I'm a bit of a freak about germs.

Ok Jack, I'll ring up Buckingham Palace and ask her. "How orften does ONE change ONES sheets and towels, ma'm?" If she's not home I'll get her to call me back. If I'm not on here any more it's probably a case of "Orf with her head" grin

hapgran Wed 14-Dec-16 12:18:21

Keeping quiet on this one - I seem to leave towels a bit longer than most posters!

jack Wed 14-Dec-16 12:17:33

Do you think the Queen has clean bed linen every night (ditto clean towels etc.)? I would, if I were her. Is there anybody out there who could find out? wink

Greenfinch Wed 14-Dec-16 12:11:06

I am with Lucky girl ! Does everyone sleep naked ? How else would sheets get dirty or sweaty? I change mine whenI have the time and nothing better to do with it.I don't have a tumble dryer so it is difficult to get things dry these days. That's my excuse anyway. I should really do it more I know but changing the duvet is my hated job ever.

Skweek1 Wed 14-Dec-16 12:10:25

I grew up with changing every other week - because of physical disabilities, it is a real nightmare changing bedding and we don't do it nearly as often as we should!

granjura Wed 14-Dec-16 12:00:11

No routine - always wait till I can dry outside in the sun. Beds every 2 weeks approx, pillow cases every week, handtowel weekly or when required- towels the same. Hate routine...

paddyann Wed 14-Dec-16 11:59:41

towels every second day and bedlinen every wednesday and saturday ,my mother did hers twice a week ( she was a stay at home mum) so I've always done the same .I love clean bedding and when my night sweats were really bad I changed it every day .My lovely mother in law wont sleep in a bed if someone else has even SAT on the cover,it has to be remade for her.Oh and I iron bedding too and always buy the best I can get, currently 1000 threadcount cotton

BlueBelle Wed 14-Dec-16 11:57:27

I think it's different if there's only one person in the bed wearing clean jimjams and getting out the shower into bed so I don't have a set day I change when I feel it's needed Towels get used for two showers than washed Suits me

Lewlew Wed 14-Dec-16 11:51:23

I'm a weekly. But someone mentioned ironing... my mum did that as there was little polyester and no fitted sheets. She'd turn edges and save worn ones before they became dust sheets or cleaning rags.

Stayed with an Irish family in the 1950s for Christmas and the sheets were STARCHED and ironed as nicely as altar cloths, which the gran did for work. I didn't think I'd like them, but found the crispness comforting, and they did soften by morning. It's one of those childhood memories that really sticks with me.

hicaz46 Wed 14-Dec-16 11:47:22

I'm with Kitty Lester - beds once a fortnight, towels weekly but hand towel more frequently. I also leave spare beds until someone comes as it is frequently someone who used the bed before.

rosesarered Wed 14-Dec-16 11:42:19

Bedding changed weekly (and often change pillow cases mid week as well!)
Towels....personal hand towels for DH and myself changed about twice a week, but general hand towels that anyone may use, changed every day.Towels from our showers are washed straight away, so clean towels every day.

Elegran Wed 14-Dec-16 11:26:36

When this topic was aired once before on GN someone posted that they changed their sheets every day

hulahoop Wed 14-Dec-16 11:23:47

I'm like you Mauri I like my sheets ironed I wash bedding 1to2 weeks towels every other day I changed spare when needed

joannewton46 Wed 14-Dec-16 11:06:57

Spare bed always clean for new user, towels and teatowels once a week (I have enough not to need to do more) but bedding probably once a month. Why does it need it more often? We shower most days, are retired so don't have energetic jobs and wear PJs to bed so washing more frequently is totally unnecessary.
My mother did the bedding every week but my Dad worked in the steel works and came home grimy. We had to fill the bath from the boiler by the fire so Friday night was bath night and showers unknown. Yes, in those days bedding did need washing every week but not any more.
Sorry if that offends your tender sensibilities ladies but I have better things to do with my time!
