Bed Cushions

Every design programme, every bed showroom, every hotel room has beds piled high with an assortment of cushions. Looks lovely. However they all have to be removed in order to get into bed, the most obvious place being onto the floor. Am I missing something here, or have we (nearly) all been brainwashed into buying cushions which serve no purpose except to chuck on the floor?

Hey so glad I am one of the majority in this issue !
Couldn't be bothered to waste good money on such useless items !!
But thanks for tip off regards bed bugs !
I often wonder if it's the worry I might be sleeping with bedbugs , that stops me getting to sleep ? In hotels !

Whoops think I did something wrong in my first attempt at starting a new thread -what did I do wrong?

My 94 year old Mum who suffers from vascular dementia, has up until two weeks ago been living in her apartment but was housebound. My DB and myself have for almost two years been supporting her and organising care services, doing shopping, organising doctor visits, collection of medicines etc. Following an assessment of Mum's health by the community nurse we were advised she should go into residential care as she is incontinent, was laying in bed all day, not washing and living on corn flakes and toast and refusing the evening meal that a care visitor was engaged to prepare for her. She has been in a wonderful care home for nearly two weeks now but keeps asking us when she is going home and says she'll go mad if she has to stay in there. She is being so well looked after but many of the other residents are far more advanced with dementia than she is and she said it's depressing her. We feel that if we leave her in there against her wishes then we are playing God with her life and if she should pass away in there feeling as she says that we have dumped her then it will haunt us for the rest of our lives. If we return her to her flat all the old problems will return and the pressure wilk be back on for DB and myself. I am 72 and my DB is 64 and just can't cope with supporting Mum in her flat anymore. We are both in a very bad place emotionally at the moment and have shed many tears. Help - can anyone advise please?

Staying with friends I have stood on a chair an put them on top of the wardrobe for the length of my stay. In hotels if there is a spare bed I put them on it otherwise on the floor!!

Never! Bloody awful things!

nannieann Tue 17-Jan-17 22:35:07

I love them but we just have one large one each. I use mine to prop me up when reading in bed and then sleep with my feet on it. Lovely!.

Seasidenana Tue 17-Jan-17 21:40:05

If some of you don't like cushions on the bed don't have them ! It's a matter of personal choice surely ? Not about being brainwashed !

joannewton46 Tue 17-Jan-17 20:16:13

No. You have to put them somewhere overnight so they just get in the way.

flaxwoven Tue 17-Jan-17 19:40:04

Can't see the point. Just extra clutter on the bed. We do have cushions in the lounge to support the back. We once stayed in a hotel where they put teddy bears on the bed!

Morgana Tue 17-Jan-17 17:38:39

No! Waste of money and I think cushions generally are over priced!!

Jalima Tue 17-Jan-17 16:42:01

shock
I will remember that Janal next time I stay in a hotel

Janal Tue 17-Jan-17 16:36:51

I have a friend who had to get up in the night in a hotel (as so many of us do),tripped on the dreaded cushions and broke both of her hips.now I curse them heartily every time I see them.

Grannylu Tue 17-Jan-17 16:27:01

Such a silly fashion! You can't get into bed without removing all those pointless cushions, and where do you put them? On the floor? That's one daft fashion I certainly shan't be falling for.

Niobe Tue 17-Jan-17 15:16:16

I love the look of them but don't have any at the moment as I don't have a chair in the bedroom. When I find a chair that I like I will get some cushions . That way they can be put on the chair at night, the idea of putting them on the floor does not appeal to me.

NanaandGrampy Tue 17-Jan-17 15:06:59

I love them too.

Yes they can be a nuisance. Yes I throw them on the armchair at night sometimes .

BUT I love the look of them, they're cheap to change , and I think the aesthetics are as important as the use.

VIOLETTE Tue 17-Jan-17 14:52:04

I love them .....each to his/her own ! I have five on the bed to match everything else in the room ..curtains, duvet cover, etc AND I also have the folded throw at the end of the bed to be pulled up over the bed when the cat decides to stay on the bed overnight ! Other half hates them with a vengeance ...and throws them everywhere, so much so that it is difficult to climb over them on the floor to get to my side ! The two spare beds also have cushions .....the cat has cushions the chairs have cushions .......anyone coming to my house can have a cushion over their head so they won't see them if it upsets them !!!!wink

We are selling our house so every morning the bed is neatly made with the cushions nicely arranged in case of a last minute viewing!

Bagatelle Tue 17-Jan-17 14:35:31

Yes, entropy, the main purpose of the Fashion Industry is to empty our bank accounts. However, a 'dedicated follower of fashion' is unlikely to notice that!

I wonder how many jobs depend on the cushion-manufacturing industry?

Bluesmum Tue 17-Jan-17 14:33:39

Life used to be too short to stuff mushrooms, now mine is too short to play cushion arranging/re-arranging on a daily, nightly basis!! I hate the way beds are dressed these days! They just look totally unmade jumbles most of the tine! We recently changed to two single, twin beds, and I have been mortified to discover I cannot buy single bedspreads that enable me to cover the bed, down to the floor on both sides and at the bottom, with a nice allowance at the top to make a false pillow type fold! All single bedspreads are now square, so touch the floor both sides but only reach the foot of the bed and the pillows! I recently spoke to the manager of a bedding department in our local large store, who confirmed this! I would love to know who decides we need to changes like this!

entropy Tue 17-Jan-17 14:28:05

Total waste of time, space and money. Cherrytree69, as a 'dedicated follower of fashion' should realise that the main purpose of the Fashion Industry is to empty our bank accounts.

Never owned a bed cushion - and I do not know anyone of any age who has them in their house. I thought there use was limited to bed and breakfasts and hotels with pretensions.

MammaN Tue 17-Jan-17 13:44:38

I haven't been brainwashed. I won't be buying any bed cushions - ever - let alone some time soon to follow fashion. Don't see the point and find them irritating in hotels. I think the bit of material is for decor. They mostly match the curtains and aren't made of material that you would want to be washing frequently because people have put their feet on them. I suspect they're only washed at the same frequency as the curtains.

Alima Tue 17-Jan-17 13:43:18

I am with the "what's the point of extra cushions on the bed" brigade. Waste of space and simply extra crap. Do have squishy cushions on the sofas but they often end up on the floor too. Similar thing, what's with all the candles strewn around now? We rid the world of chip pans and get candles instead. Very odd.

pollyperkins Tue 17-Jan-17 13:41:43

I also cant stand them on beds, nor can DH, We usually ut them on top of the wardrobe if poss in hotel rooms. I take the point that people use them when watching TV but we almost never do (certainly not at home - no TV in bedroom. ). If we were to, surely pillows are adequate - we prop ourselves up with pillows to drink our morning tea in bed. And pillow cases are much easier to launder than cushion covers. Also we have no pets so that argument doesn't work for us either.

I do like cushions on armchairs and sofas though to put behind my back. Quite uncomfortable without them. They also add to what is a public room (unlike thrbedroom). But DH and DS juts throw them on the floor - very annoying!

If you need a touch of colour or prettiness in the bedroom why not buy a patterned duvet cover and pillow cases?

Witzend Tue 17-Jan-17 13:28:23

Can't stand them on beds, is what I meant. Nice squashy ones on sofas, etc., fine.
