Bed Cushions

Every design programme, every bed showroom, every hotel room has beds piled high with an assortment of cushions. Looks lovely. However they all have to be removed in order to get into bed, the most obvious place being onto the floor. Am I missing something here, or have we (nearly) all been brainwashed into buying cushions which serve no purpose except to chuck on the floor?

I confess to being a cushion freak sprite66, but really only have 2 small ones on the bed and that's only because they match the curtains and they were too lovely to resist. You are right though, they just get thrown on the floor when we get into bed.

My real cushion weakness is in my family/dining room. I have a small sofa piled with all kinds of cushions. I am practising Hygge and cannot resist soft, cosy textures. I love throws too and everything else that promotes that warm, cosy atmosphere.

I think they look so nice and finish off the overall decor of a room just two pillows on the bedroom floor would not really cause a problem I am sure,if in hotels they can be placed in the bottom of wardrobes if you don't want them on your bed.

As well as being decorative the cushions serve to support your back if you retire to your room in the afternoon for a quiet read, or reading in bed with a ☕️ in the morning, or last thing at night.
MrA loathes them. He flings them on the floor with a gesture of disgust as he gets into bed, and once after making the bed, instead of artfully arranging them, piled them all into a vertical tower just to annoy me. shock

I'm with Mr A; I loathe them too. They are pointless. I cannot countenance throwing them on the floor, and I don't want to have the bother of finding somewhere else to put them. The last hotel we stayed in, I asked for them to be taken out of the room for the duration of our stay.

grumppa Mon 16-Jan-17 13:17:07

Well done Mr A. They are a thundering nuisance.

Seems to be a common thing, women love cushions and throws and men hate them, is that a really sexist comment ? I did have a lot of both but have ditched most now apart from some cushions. Saved myself a lot of washing.grin

Are we married to twins JaneA? Dh hates all cushions with a passion. Or at least he did until he hurt his back and now can often be found with one wedged between him and the chair back!

janeainsworth Mon 16-Jan-17 14:12:06

Sounds like it Kittygrin

I like cushions on a chair, but those on beds are just a nuisance. You don't need them ever. If you want to prop yourself up to read, that's what the extra pillows are for.

tanith Mon 16-Jan-17 14:44:29

I used to have some but realised what a waste of time and energy they were, on and off the bed for no good reason whatsoever. I bought square continental pillows which sit against the headboard and our normal pillows on the bed. Once I've finished reading or ipading grin the square pillow goes on the chair and I sleep on my normal feather pillow.
OH was very happy when I got rid as he couldn't arrange them tastefully like I could wink

I love bed cushions and have them for every season, (even ones with polar bears and penguins for the winter in the room our DGD uses).
I embarrassed to say they don't last very long because the dog runs off with them and shreds them to pieces for some unknown reason - probably because they get thrown on the floor at night! grin

I love textures too, so yes, cushions in most rooms.

Wobblybits Mon 16-Jan-17 16:00:12

You obviously have a wise dog Lillie, what purpoe do bed cushions serve.? Friends of our have loads of them, trying to find somewhere to throw them is a pain.

sprite66 Mon 16-Jan-17 16:14:17

Oh, so I'm not the only one to not get the bed cushions thing. Have to confess to liking throws, but then they have a purpose especially on a winter's evening. Also a nice touch of hygge.

I also cannot see any point in the runner that hotels put across the foot of the bed, why?

Lillie Mon 16-Jan-17 16:22:18

Isn't the runner on beds in hotels so that you can put your dirty feet/shoes on it and not get the white linen grubby? grin

Wobblybits Mon 16-Jan-17 16:26:36

Speak for yourself, my feet aren't dirty and Mrs.P would have a fit if I put my shoes on the bed. However, I will concede to putting cases on the bed, which could be dirty.

Lillie Mon 16-Jan-17 16:36:28

DH always flops on the bed in hotels with walking shoes on and watches TV. I think he likes to be prepared for a quick getaway in case of an emergency!! Not at home, I hasten to add!

Stansgran Mon 16-Jan-17 16:38:57

I get a bit shrieky about suitcases on beds as I have been informed that that is how bed bugs travel from New York. Not that we've ever suffered from them ( yet)

Cherrytree59 Mon 16-Jan-17 16:49:42

This year (or should it be decade) is cushions everywhere.
Next year could well be the year of the naked bed or sofa! grin

And as most of us are

My DH is the same, he loathes cushions and immediately chucks them on the floor if they are in a chair. However, if they are on the bed he stands there looking all pathetic and says 'What are we supposed to do with those?' The only bed cushions I have came with a set of VandA bedlinen I bought cheaply from Trego Mills and that was because they were too pretty to resist. I only put them on the guest bed, though, as DH would throw a fit if they were on our bed. I think cushions must be a woman thing.

ninathenana Mon 16-Jan-17 18:02:56

Nobody except H and I see our bedroom and once I'm dressed in the morning I hardly ever go back into the bedroom so what's the point of a pile of cusions. Also I quiet often fold my duvet neatly to the bottom of bed all day to air the sheet and matress, so cusions would stay on the floor anyway.
I do however have them in the lounge. I use a firm one behind my lower back, the others are for decoration. H throws the one in his chair onto the sofa before he sits down.

Can't see the point of bed cushions. I always chuck them on the floor or recently, when staying in a rented house, piled them up on top of the wardrobe along with the ridiculous, useless bit of material over the foot of the bed. I have extra pillows when reading in my big 6' bed and as I have no husband to share the bed with any more, pile them on the other side when sleeping. Far better use ??

Soniah Mon 16-Jan-17 19:48:52

cushions on the bed? Therein lies madness.
