Need a new mattress! Sorry it’s boring!

Well thank you for answering everyone. The update is that we went to JL and tried their lowest price visprings but they seemed too firm and not at all inviting. Then we tried the JL Natural collection and it seemed really soft and comfy. So took a chance and decided to go with their Egyptian Cotton 7000. However, since then we have read threads mentioning that the bed which arrives does not feel like the one in the store. There is talk of it being really hard and smelly for quite awhile. Others complain it was too soft and didn’t give support. Others on the JL reviews were pleased. We queried this with a JL salesman and he said it takes time to soften up - could be three months!! Now I wonder what we are in for. My SIL says buying a mattress is a minefield. Reading your posts confirms this. It’s being delivered on Wednesday.....ooh...ahh.

I can't choose a mattress by laying on it for 5-10 minutes in a shop, so last time I bought a very expensive pocket sprung with memory foam top, it weighs a ton. I again decided it wasn't comfortable but I really didn't think any bed would be. So instead of wasting more money I just bought a thick mattress topper. Problem solved for a couple of years and then the aches returned. Bought an even thick memory foam topper, binned the current one etc. So now just replace the topper with a really good quality thick topper every couple of years and problem solved.

What a lot of posters have already said, go to a good independent bed retailer, they are much more knowledgeable than the ‘Chains’.
We did this earlier this year, as our old comfortable mattress was now not so comfy, and about 11 years old.
The make we bought was Gainsborough, and it was expensive, but think how long you spend in bed.
At first I used a mattress topper ( memory foam) on it, but it was affecting my hip ( memory foam is hard to turn over on) and think I was getting stuck in one sleeping position for too long.So, have put away the topper, and now sleep better.
The mattress is designated as medium firm.
All mattresses will sag in time, and need turning regularly ( unless you buy a non turn one, of course.)
Oh for the days when I could, and did, sleep on anything, especially on many camping holidays with the children.

JL pocket sprung mattress from Natural collection. Medium. Heavy but just about manageable. Also bought bed frame, with unsprung slats (makes it a bit firmer). All delivered on time, and built in situ. Advised against mattress topper. An unnecessary expense, and they need replacing frequently, the salesman said. I took his advice.
So far so good.

Dislike the foam mattresses I’ve used.... too hot and clammy ..... and don’t seem to ‘breath’ .

Strangely I've never found mattress toppers to be hot and sweaty but always go for one with a clima- cool cover. The one thing having dodgy knees has taught me is to lay still, no turning over, so if memory foam stops me turning over that's great, plus I get a better nights sleep. I sleep with my legs raised so laying on my side would be both uncomfortable and difficult. Of course toppers need changing frequently, they wear just like everything else but they're not particularly expensive and the mattress is as good as new. So I spend around £100 on a topper every year and sleep like a baby.

M&S have mattresses on sale. Mine is from there-1500 memory foam topped pocket sprung. It is wonderful.

We bought from independent family shop. After a week they took it back ( too hard. hace fibromyalgia) and were so nice. Make sure you can return. No need to overpay.

I bought a new mattress lately from a local bed ‘warehouse’. I asked how long they had been open.....27 years! Think they must be pretty reliable!
On another note, my daughter informed me that a new mattress should be allowed to air because of the flame retardants, as I put the sheets on she said.....about a week at least!

Must get new reading glasses. I read this thread title as need a new mistress .........

I change my mattress for 3 years, because my husband loves to eat on the mattress, and we love the pocket sprung mattress, too. Because of its firm and support, and we move our mattress with my husband. We love to give our old mattress to the poor people who haven't the mattress, and we would move the mattress to my husband's car and call our children to send the mattress to the poor guy by car, my children both love to do that with. And we bought a homylink mattress for a half year, that is great I think so.
