Do you act on “urges”?

I really didn’t mean to do more than put some ironing away, but somehow I found myself bagging up sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers I no longer use and have filled two huge bags for the charity shop.
Then I started on the shoes...5 pairs (one pair looks unworn!)
Ready to go.
Better stop, although I do have an urge to polish some silver, after supper with friends the other night who still use theirs. And it reminded me of what I have got!

Were it not for these sporadic "urges" I wonder if I would ever get anything done!!
Trouble is that I tend to over exert myself and make such a clean sweep that for days afterwards I bitterly regret discarding so many things now gone for recycling or the Charity stores!

My last "urge" was just prior to what we thought were exchanging of contracts and down sizing big time from a 4 bed/3 bath home standing in an acre of ground to a 2 bed/2 bath retirement apartment.

It was manic and a real case of don`t stand still or you might well end up on the rubbish heap!!!

There were several layers to this proposed move.
Furniture all set for the Auction house plus some antiques and precious pieces,Antique shop for other less valuable bits and bobs.............a garage sale for garage/ garden sale, and whilst heaps of older more used but yet sturdy clothing went to the Red Cross and Salvation Army..........whilst not having had a clothese clear out in all our 14 years of living here (I hold my head in shame..........urges were obviously on strike!!)........I ruthlessly went through wardrobes, cupboards, chests of drawers and more wardrobes ending up with some 7 black bags full, whilst a double bed were covered about 4 high from unworn, hardly worn, now oversized coats etc............our local Cancer Charity shop sent their van and went away smiling.............
The garage/garden sale sold almost all our garden stone urns complete with plantings, all our outdoor furniture, tools and equipment etc.............
ONLY to hear( when we were both very ill in Hospital taken is as emergencies).............the sale of our property had been cancelled.

Agh...................Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

As you may well expect and understand..............all urges also went out of the window......rapidly!!!

We are about to put the property back on the market.............and I am expecting a further few urges very soon!!

Nothing like old knickers or tee shirts to make dusters!
I usually cut off the gussets and elastic bits - a process DD refers to as ‘removing the euphemisms’ !

I am not keen on housework but I do love to polish the silver because it used to be my parents and it reminds me of the hours Dad spent polishing it every Sunday morning whilst Mum was cooking the Sunday dinner.

Bathsheba
You are a lady after my own heart- I do the absolute same thing!’
This afternoon I had a hair appointment, when I turned op my hairdresser had booked me in for tomorrow instead and wasn’t free to fit me in later.
So... instead of sitting down and finishing my book I decided to have a good old clean and clear out.
Spare bedroom was gutted at Easter, some of you lovely ladies may remember the saga of the unwanted lodger?!
I did loads in about 3 and a half hours, it was very therapeutic and now my house is looking and smelling sooo fresh!!
I can get my hair done tomorrow knowing I have a lazy day planned!

I've often used old cotton knickers as dusters. One day when DD was about seven, she had a friend in to play. DD told me later that the friend had been horrified when she had used said duster to wipe the blackboard they were using. Apparently it didn't happen in their home.

Love having a good clear. I have just one prompted by the fact that I had lost my my big bunch of keys with all my important keys, also because my husband keeps saying found another pair of glasses (make 11 in all). So every drawer, cupboard and bag was sorted and either down to the charity shop or tip. Trouble is in about 2 weeks time I will go into the shop and probably buy it back again forgetting I donated it. Still looking for the keys.

Best way to tidy up is ask visitors over ! Nannyme just do small bits, set a timer and do one task, good luck.

I was visited by the urge to clean windows yesterday. Got eight done. In other words the upstairs windows, plus kitchen and passage. Now all that is left are the five that face south and have the sun on them all day. Should really do them in the early evening today, but doubt I shall.

Someone nicked my shoulder-bag containing my housekeeping money for the next fortnight, my passport, my international health insurance card and my visa card this morning in Lidl, so I am in a filthy mood now. Really ought to work it off on the windows!

Definitely a quick tidy up can sometimes end in a spring clean.

I had an urge, long postponed, to clear out my shoes.
I have many pairs of pretty high heels which I shall never be able to wear again, as me poor ol’ feet can only cope with comfy pumps.
I amassed quite a pile, and put them in a box for the charity shop, then DGD age 4, fell on them with delight and spent the afternoon tottering around dressed up in the shoes, and some old hats and scarves also destined for recycling.
I told her I was going to give them to the Marie Curie shop, and she said “Oh no, Nanna - I might want to wear them when I get married!”
I hope she doesn’t ever fall on such hard times!

Well, the en-suite is still uncleaned! Still, it is only me using it. Instead I hung out two loads of washing, love doing that, it is so nice to see a washing line full of clean clothes fluttering in the breeze. Then thought I'd better cut the front grass as we are due heavy thunderstorms this afternoon, went round the edges as well and did a bit of weeding. Then potted up some more bedding plants. Had lunch and now feel justified in sitting down with the Telegraph crossword and my Kindle. Will have to keep my eye on the weather for my washing.

Normally when I get an ‘urge’ to clean I manage to stifle it and take the dog out instead. But, today, for some bizarre reason I am sorting out the garden shed - except, actually, I’m also catching up on my emails and Gransnet etc. Love modern technology at times!

Could hope for slightly better weather, but nevertheless it’s rather pleasant sitting here looking at the house from a different part of the garden.

Going indoors now, being bitten by garden bugs that have taken a dislike to being disturbed! ??

Having "downsized" twice in just over 3 years I now have little to clear out. I do have occasional urges to do some housework, usually when you can write your name in the dustblush.

Sunny days give me the urge to potter around the garden, rather be outside than indoors. Tuesday morning I did have the urge to clear my ironing basket (I hate ironing). Today the only urge I have is to curl up on the settee & sleep as I've got a raging toothache (seeing Dentist tomorrow) but instead it's a bowl of soup, painkillers & off to Job Centre for my 6 monthly meeting with my Work Coachhmm

GrannyGravy13 Thu 31-May-18 12:16:08

Petra I am just 'up the road'

Jayelld Thu 31-May-18 12:15:48

I downsized 4 and a half years ago. I had been in my last flat for 34 years, raising my daughter. I literally started in one corner of the spare room with 1 bin bag and two boxes, 1 to keep, 1 for charity. Then I worked round the room until it was all packed. Then as I went through my flat, all furniture and boxes I was keeping were stored in the spare room, unwanted items went to charity shops daily and several tips a week to the tip.
By the time I moved, every thing was packed apart from my bed.
Oh I had my sisters wedding to attend and babysit GC on the day.

petra Thu 31-May-18 12:14:11

Nannyme
Do you live in or around Southend on sea?
I would be more than happy to come and 'sort you out' grin. I don't have any stuff/ unwanted clothes/ ugly knick knacts. They are just not allowed in my bungalow.
OH has a long running joke that he's frightened to stand around too long in case he's sent to the recycling centre grin

GrannyGravy13 Thu 31-May-18 12:10:03

This thread has made me chuckle - just opened wardrobe, now sitting on bed, still on gn- need to get on and find my URGE xx

MawBroon Thu 31-May-18 11:58:46

Glad I had “the urge” yesterday, TBH it’s usually more like this!

gmelon Thu 31-May-18 11:55:22

I stay away from the urges constantly telling myself to get on with the more important daily stuff first.
Years ago I'd regularly get distracted by urges to start clearing out or mid afternoon I'd suddenly start decorating a room.
These days my mobility is very limited so planning tasks is forced on me sad

Goblinsattackin Thu 31-May-18 11:47:33

Maw, please can I have some of whatever it is you're having? I haven't had a sort out in thirty years.

David1968 Thu 31-May-18 11:46:09

Just moved to a smaller home, and oh, the joy! - of all the stuff we gave away! Now we actually know what's in every cupboard (almost). Haven't missed a thing that we gave away, and our new home feels so much "lighter" and uncluttered. The icing on the cake is the Hospice telling us that what we gave them raised £270.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 31-May-18 11:40:45

Have all my freshly ironed clothes hanging outside my wardrobe. I shall finish my coffee and this post, shift my backside upstairs and sort out my wardrobes. I done my underwear drawers last week.

I feel so much better in myself after a clear out, and it means that when I lay on the sofa with gransnet and my kindle later I shall feel no guilt!!!

Husband is already engrossed in his kindle.

Kim19 Thu 31-May-18 11:25:23

I loves urges. Yet another bonus of the freedom of being retired. However, like everything else in a balanced(?) life, they have to be controlled. I pander to sudden desires to go on a big city jolly or meet someone for coffee or lunch. As for the domestic ones? Completely ignored and they do go away ever so quickly. Great thread.

Sheilasue Thu 31-May-18 11:00:05

Love a good clear out, cleared out the ottoman at the bottom of our bed the other day. Old duvet covers, etc.

nanaK54 Thu 31-May-18 10:37:18

I had a 'get on with some admin' urge earlier this morning and just look where I am now grin
