Mice or rats in loft

I’m going to try that Greta8 - Some say they work, some not, but it’s definitely worth a go. I’ve also ordered some peppermint oil!

Last month, I saw a rodent in my house, the body is about 3 to 4 inches in length, who was trying destroy my house, by cutting all electric wires and spreading disease.

Immediately, I called up the local Nassau County exterminator who had done the best prevention methods to eliminate all rodents.
After the rat infestation I was also dealing with the same situation of rodent smell then I had opened up the windows and used electric fans, I had also used deodorizing air fresheners and disinfectants which helped to eliminate the rodent smell.

Do be aware it may not be nice or rats but birds that get inthrough the eves my kids grew up with little pattering around over their beds but it was actually swifts

It might be worth investigating what is up there.

My DM had starlings in her bungalow roof every winter. They went on their own in the spring. After a couple of winters she had a builder go round and net under the eaves to stop them getting in.

At our last house we had a winter bat roost in our chalet bungalow on the other side of the wall from my DS’s bed. (They moved under the hanging tiles in summer) They jiffled a lot if the weather was warmer.

Where we live now we have house sparrows.

When we lived in the country we had mice each winter. We caught one running around livingroom. Had it in a jar and of course we couldn't kill it, we put it out in the field that bordered our garden, knowing it would be back by evening (though hoping it wouldn't).

They seem to like the plastic that covers wiring. We used poison because we wanted our lights to work, but yes you get a "mousey" smell.

I can't say we really heard the mice, just saw "evidence" and the one running around our livingroom. So maybe it is birds you have.

Just remembered we did hear them in the walls.

Could be squirrels!

It could also be a member of the weasel family. The exterminator may be able to tell you what it is if there are droppings around, which there will be if it is mice.

Dead rats stink, and as they, like mice, do not all die in the open, but under floorboards or behind skirting-boards poison would not be my method of choice.

Would you object to borrowing a fox terrier or a cat?

When we were living in the country we had a lot of experience with mice, and the damage they can do. In the house, in the car, in the piano etc.
So we resorted to poison in the end. Yes, the decomposing bodies smell bad , like gas.
But when you take into account the rate at which they can breed, for us there was no choice.

When we lived in the country we had the odd ‘visiter’ luckily not in the loft. We knew straight away as the cat would sit staring and waiting for it to emerge. Said cat also dealt with the problem.

We once had mice in the loft from the field behind our house. They took the peanuts we had in the garage for feeding the birds and it seemed like they were playing football above our bed. I couldn’t sleep, imagining the mouse running over my face. (I am not normally scared of them.) . We had the pest man in. We never noticed any smell afterwards. I felt bad because I had decided to become vegetarian a few days before, and it seemed a bit hypocritical, but I couldn’t put up with it. We have had a cat since then and no problems!

Gma29 when I moved into my bungalow last year which had been empty over a year. The people selling cleaned it but left the mice in the loft and evidence of them in the kitchen . My pest controller used poison as I wanted the pests dead. None in the kitchen but killed the ones in loft. Couldn't find bodies no smell but did have problem with flies. The loft hatch was in the shower room. I got 2 large rodent/ insect electronic repellers from Screwfix. One plugged in the hall the other in the bedroom. It made the fly's easy to hit. But I used fly papers and got my son to tape up the edges of the loft. They either found another way out or died out. This year a squirrel got in the loft. Pest control put out traps but I also had my roofers block any route into loft. They put a hard plastic board which is hinged under the tile lip and it sits in the gutter nothing can get in its completely sealed. The squirrel couldn't get back in. Had my home improvements guys remove all the insulation as it had mouse and squirrel droppings . Found 2 long dead mice . Had all new insulation put down. Due to home improvements had loft hatch moved into bedroom. It's well sealed as I am never putting anything up there. Hope that helps.
