cleaning the toilet

Not a nice subject, I know. But husband and I disagree on this.
He believes that the blue stuff you can put down is the answer. Whereas I think just water and a hand clothed in a disposable rubber glove.
No doubt I'll compromise as usual, just for peace.
How do you clean yours?

Modern toilet bowls don't have rims anymore (at least mine don't) thank goodness and I have to agree that today's toilet brushes are much too cumbersome to reach around the bend and into sharp corners.
I try to keep chemical products such as bleach down to a minimum as it is so bad for the environment.

Asda George home white toilet brush.
It's only £2 and has a main brush but also a small brush for the rim attached to the main brush.

Just glanced to the right and there is an ad from a Dutch company for toilet bowls, coincidence I don't think sosmile

For some reason I don't like toilet brushes. Maybe because I suspect there will always be a few small pieces of faeces left stranded among the bristles.
I know it's just decomposed food, but still not nice to think about.

I use Method toilet cleaner (eco friendly not tested on animals) and a loo brush. Lovely minty smell.

grannyqueenie Thu 28-Jun-18 18:13:34

Sorry slightly off topic here. OldMeg I just read somewhere today that both Ecover and Method have recently been swallowed up by Johnston and Johnston who as far as I’m aware don’t have the same commitment to cruelty free products. I was disappointed, you may feel the same.

Thank you for pointing out the method/ecover take over grannyqueenie I use these products all around the home. Will keep an eye on their continuing eco/animal testing ethics.

buy a litre bottle of cheap Coca Cola , pour in the loo and leave overnight!
Yes, that's good too Nanna58 - it dissolves limescale
We buy Coca Cola in case guests want some but we never drink it ourselves so when it goes out of date it goes down the loo.

Just think what it does to your teeth and insides .....

Oh, I didn't know that!

I have noticed that supermarkets are suddenly producing a lot of their own 'eco' products and I wondered how eco and ethical they really are.

wash toilet seat with antibacterial spray every morning.. husband does toilet duck and brush daily. bleach overnight now and again. Bath rarely used and cleaned when we do.Shower is hell to clean doors never look clean no matter what I do. and believe me I've tried everything.

Lazigirl Thu 28-Jun-18 20:34:11

I wouldn't worry too much about the toilet as most pathogens according to research are found in the kitchen sink, particularly in sponges!

I find scrubbing the shower doors with one of those net body scrubbers (they're not good for the environment though) and some shampoo brings them up clean and shiny.
Just very occasionally I use a bathroom product that gets rid of limescale.

Fennel Thu 28-Jun-18 20:45:05

Oh dear - you lot make me feel (somewhat) guilty blush.

send him round to train mine annep
He's excellent in so many ways but cleaning the toilet after he's used it is not one of his strengths.

FarNorth Thu 28-Jun-18 20:55:06

I use a rubber toilet brush - not so nasty as a bristly one - and shampoo or shower gel which I keep on a shelf, not on the floor.
That way, I'm more likely to clean the loo most days which didn't used to happen blush.

OldMeg Thu 28-Jun-18 22:52:28

Yes granniequeenie I was aware of that and it was last year. Johnson and Johnson are looking to have eco-friendly brands to capture the trend towards more environmentally friendly products.

They have no plans to alter the products. What indeed would be the point when that is exactly what they were buying into? ?

FlexibleFriend Thu 28-Jun-18 22:55:26

I use bleach and Toilet duck but not together, I keep a rim brush in the cupboard in both the downstairs loo and the bathroom and it's not like anyone else would dream of cleaning it.

I think that cleaning the toilet is a chore that has not often benefitted from gender equality.

Purpledaffodil Fri 29-Jun-18 06:49:09

Why is loo cleaning generally a pink job when men spend so much time looking into it??

petra Fri 29-Jun-18 11:21:40

I was advised to never use any cleaning products on shower doors. Just use a squeegee thing and micro cloth. It works grin

wot Fri 29-Jun-18 11:24:07

Use a steam cleaner under the rim.

FarNorth Fri 29-Jun-18 12:39:31

A 'Bloo' block, I prefer the kind which is clear not blue, goes in the cistern and helps to stop the toilet getting too yucky in the first place.

(The poor chaps just don't notice that it needs done, btw. Such a shame for them.)

Fennel Fri 29-Jun-18 13:14:29

It's my husband who is the fussy one, FarNorth. Drives me mad.

Cabbie21 Fri 29-Jun-18 13:26:34

My plumber advised me against putting a block into the cistern. He said it will damage the fittings. I have tried various rim cleaners but DH says they get in his way....
My latest is those things that stick on the inside of the pan. Keeps the loo fresh and smells nice, but as we do not flush the loo if ( when) we go in the night, it does get stained. I use bleach about once a week.

annodomini Fri 29-Jun-18 14:05:04

Bleach and loo brush for me, though I will now try and eco-friendly cleaner. No problems with limescale here as we have very soft water from the Dark Peak.
