Black flooring for kitchen?

Hello all, and sending good wishes.

Now, if you had a kitchen that measured approximately 12m sq, and had light beech cupboards, sort of black granite type speckled worktops, tiles that are black, cream and light coffee, floor currently light beech (but not the same colour as the cupboards) and needs replacing, what colour floor would you go for?

It's a kitchen dining room, the (cat proof!) dining chairs are black with chrome legs, most of the kitchen bits are either black or chrome/silver.

I have lived with the current floor since we bought the house in 2005, and the floor does need replacing.

Have looked at various "wood" (i.e.laminate/vinyl) options, but just wondered if black might be a good, possibly even "stylish" option!

Your opinions are welcomed!!

light coffee
What about picking up the colour of the light coffee tiles?

you won't notice if coffee/tea gets spilled then grin

I would go for medium to light grey, as black will show every speck of dust and crumb.

It's probably the only time DH has cleaned a kitchen floor - and it had to be done to perfection! It must have put him off completely.

I had black slate in my kitchen and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Every little crumb, mark and water spillage showed up and baking day was a nightmare! Put oak effect vinyl down and that's so much better.

I have faux travertine tiles down in the kitchen. It is harder wearing than the stone because it is porcelain and will not stain. It never looks dirty.

In our last house we had terracotta tiles which needed mopping every couple of days and polishing every so often.

I would think very hard before putting a dark floor in the kitchen.

Shiny black tiles do show every mark - DH did some odd jobs for a builder friend after retirement, one task was to clean the very stylish shiny black tiles the buyer had requested throughout a very large kitchen-diner.
He came home and said 'please don't ever choose shiny black tiles for our kitchen!'.

I don't like black flooring for kitchen at all. Because kitchen needs more cleaning and back color is not suitable for it.

Phoenix, if you feel good with black floor why not? I love modern interiors so I also have kitchen with mixed black and wooden color. Of course there must be a lot of light in the room so it won't be so dark. If you are not sure what floor color to choose let's make an visualisation in design programms. In Ikea it is free to ask an assistant to help you or you can do it on your own online!

No no no don’t have black slate. Very unfriendly, unless you Have underfloor heating it’s cold, and rough and unless you make sure to have it properly sealed and maintain it then it’s hell to clean.
Just replaced one. With wood.

p.s I do love the look of it though.

My floor is dark navy blue stone tiles. Doesn't show the dirt but does show up every crumb.
I'd be happier if I could see the dirt and that it's been cleaned.
I'd also be happier if it showed less small crumbs.
Not a success really but does make for a very clean floor, just in case there is unseen dirt lurking.
Then again I don't clean it. (Multiple sclerosis).

Vinyl could be open as an option then.
How about photos online of kitchens with black flooring. There must be lots if you Google.
My husband finds Pinterest useful for reference.

Go light.

It will do!

gmelon managed to get a reasonable sized piece, ignored by mogs, so we can tick the box on that count.

Now it seems to be just down to my worry that it will make the kitchen look smaller and darker confused

Can you get a rug sized sample or offcut of the vinyl and see if the cats claw it?
Lay it on the kitchen floor and see what they do.

My kitchen flooring is black. I love it. Quick sweep each day ( would need to do that whatever the colour) and a quick mop a couple of times a week.

I worked in a very busy house, with lots of people milling around, parties quite often, and the dining table with 7 people eating there every day.
We had oak effect lino down, and it kept immaculate.
It had been down around 10 years and was as good as the day it was laid.
Plus it didn't show any crumbs or stains.

I have a black slate floor and with a hairy, muddy dog it is a disaster ! Shows every mark and I could be forever cleaning it. I have learnt not to look too often blush

Mr P is rather taken with this one:

Whatever flooring you purchase don't buy anything with a shine.
I have engineered wood flooring in both the hall and dinner.
The floor in the hall has a mat finish and is great but the diner floor has a shine and it shows every mark and bit on it.
You could clean the floor every day and within a couple of hour of walking it needs sweeping again.

The problem with slate or tiles is that if you drop a plate or a dish, it will smash to smithereens. I would bear that in mins as I'm always dropping things. I would go for amtico or karndean. My sister has flotex because it is warm underfoot, it reduces echoing, it's indestructible, and you can scrub it. She had samples to drop on the floor which helped when making the choice.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 22:21:08

That would look good Phoenix. I have this on the floor:- internetflooringsupplies.co.uk/karndean-knight-tile-lime-washed-oak-kp99.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwlejcBRAdEiwAAbj6KWpHIRcNa6XvxkpM0vB4DtHopBPECHjJz8bFIxpH_f1Qe2JhkIAouxoC9DsQAvD_BwE

And the countertops are like a wooden butcher's block. Cupboards are cream, tiles neutral, like yours. Could you go to a flooring company and get some samples to put down and see what works best in different light? I had several samples down for weeks whilst I decided. Its a big decision to take and, like you said, you want to get it right first time.

I really like black tiled floors. The house I have seen with them always, seem stylish.

phoenix Thu 13-Sept-18 22:16:10

Going back to the topic, sort of, I wish I could persuade Mr P to consider ordinary vinyl flooring, I'm pretty sure that the current incumbent mogs wouldn't scratch it, but he is not prepared to risk it sad

I feel that we could probably find one that was a similar pattern/effect to the worktops, so might look quite good, a sort of "sandwich" as in worktop, light coloured cupboards, then same sort of floor as worktops.
