Naff or not?

My patio badly needs re-pointing. I have the 'brush-in and wet' stuff and plan to do it when the weather cools down.
I have had the idea of setting in an occasional shiny bead, making sure they are not a slip or trip hazard. My garden is quite feminine, with lots of flowers, fairy lights and metal sculptures of peacock and cats.
What do you think of the idea and how could I make it tasteful rather than tacky?

Oooooh, pretty! Yes, forget your love of symmetry, it needs to look random even if it isn't, but yes, yes, yes! I think I'd go even further, and make some resin beads with glitter or mica powder in toning colours embedded in them!
Please may we see photos of the finished job?

You’re the one that matters .... your patio... your choice. Oh opinion shouldn’t matter.

A neighbour of ours has painted large pebbles and put on her low garden wall. They are just so lovely with flowers and insects and smiley faces on but are cemented in place naturally!

I'm not convinced that beads would work from the practical point of view - they'd possibly be too small to make much impact and I'm not sure whether they'd last long.

I'd consider mosaic tiles - which can be cut to size to fit the gaps. If you want shiny then they're probably available too.

To be absolutely honest, I think factory made beads would be naff. I (would definitely prefer broken up coloured glass. (As I've said before grin)

Different strokes for different folks though. And different gardens.

I think an occasional bead will look lovely. You go for it. Can you post pics when you have finished it please, I’d love to see it

Lovely idea! What about planting some tiny alpines or thymes in the cracks? Pretty flowers and thyme smells lovely if you tread on it. A garden centre will tell you what plants are suitable.
You can buy glow in the dark resin so you could make your own 'pebbles' to scatter in with your beads. You can also get coloured grits for fish tanks. Experiment in an out of the way part of your patio with filling the joints with silicone caulking (available in different colours) and embedding your treasures in it before it sets - just a thought, shouldn't need re-doing for years after.
I would love to have fairy lights around the garden for sitting out in the summer but living where I do (North of Scotland), it isn't dark until well after my bedtime in the summer, and when it is dark enough, it is too cold to want to sit out and the curtains are drawn so can't even see them from inside. I miss the darker summer evenings in country pub gardens when I lived in London.
Please post some photos of what you do so we can all admire.

Love that idea! I'd also string beads up and either hang them from a tree or shrubs so they catch the light, or add them to bunting.

Agranbytheendofthesummer Fri 26-Jul-19 11:33:37

Your garden looks beautiful and the stones would only add to it. Lovely idea. ✨

shysal Fri 26-Jul-19 11:52:01

jaylucy, I have beads hanging from the bird feeder which send rainbows around the garden. I had more but DGD admired them so I gave them to her (as we Grans do!)

quizqueen Fri 26-Jul-19 12:16:17

In my opinion, it would tacky. If I bought a house which had them, I would be digging them out straight away. Fairy lights etc. are moveable, but it's your home so your decision. Why are you asking the world of the internet anyway!

Bijou Fri 26-Jul-19 12:25:30

I prefer a natural garden just with trees, plants and flowers. I do have bird baths and feeders but things like fairy lights and ornaments I cannot stand.

JanaNana Fri 26-Jul-19 12:33:50

I think they"lle look lovely just a few dotted here and there, as long as they"re safe and non slip when it's been raining and set in flat enough so you won't trip on them. The rest of your garden looks lovely and this will complete it.

Brilliant idea, might nick it myself! My garden has a similar vibe going on.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 26-Jul-19 12:36:15

It is down to what you like / want and can manage . I have a large garden which due to that which comes to us all sad and less mobile have had to make it manageable.
Unless I want to pay someone else to do it for me and what pleasure is there in having a garden when all you can do is sit and look at what someone else has had to do for you.

Craftycat Fri 26-Jul-19 12:38:58

Sounds lovely. My patio is very feminine & pretty. If DH wants it butched up he can help do it!!
Some hope!

Esmerelda Fri 26-Jul-19 14:15:26

Am totally inspired by your idea shysal as I too have a patio where the pointing is crumbling and needs replacing. Time for me to think "colour scheme" ... do post up some pictures once you've done it.
PS I think your garden looks just lovely!

GabriellaG54 Fri 26-Jul-19 14:53:38

shysal
Fabuloso garden...I love the different levels.
I'm sure it's a wonderful place to relax and having fairy lights and Moroccan lanterns on as night falls is magic. Love it.

Auntieflo Fri 26-Jul-19 15:51:09

Shysal, love the idea of crystals hanging from your bird feeder, so I am gong to ‘borrow’ your idea. I have 3 or 4 lovely hanging crystals, and shall adorn my bit of garden faffery. Two little birds on a swinging perch, Peter and Paul.
I don’t care if they don’t like it. Off now to search for said crystals!

Bucklen Fri 26-Jul-19 17:15:19

It's your garden.

Do what YOU want .

Feminine garden calls out for Sparkly and Bling , If that's your thing ( which it probably is by your question ). DO IT !

Barmeyoldbat Fri 26-Jul-19 18:43:08

I would say go for it. I have solar lanterns hanging from the trees and a glass greenman that I made hanging from the fence. Instead of being over why not get one of those plastic low stools and sit on that?

Buntybunny21 Fri 26-Jul-19 18:43:22

Shysall, just been round your garden, very nice pics

Molly10 Fri 26-Jul-19 18:58:14

I love your garden shysal. It looks very private and I can picture your beaded handiwork. Go for it. Enjoy doing it and enjoying it after. sunshine

Theoddbird Fri 26-Jul-19 20:05:56

Sounds absolutely wonderful. Go for it. Put your unique stamp on it. I have just acquired a garden mo
oring...had since Tuesday and I already have loads of Crystal sun catchers hanging from a dead curly willow....

Grandmama Fri 26-Jul-19 21:01:39

Sounds lovely - good luck with it. I'm envious!
