Do you bath or shower?

Reading the other day about a lady whose husband sometimes took two baths a day got me wondering.

Do people really still take a bath every day?

Here in Denmark no-one would dream of doing so. People shower to save water and to keep their water rates down to an affordable amount.

If you have a bath tub at all, and many people don't as there isn't room in a flat, you bath once in a while as a great luxury.

Am I right in thinking that bathing is still more common than showering in the UK?

I can assure you that every bit of me has been thoroughly wetted and cleaned in the shower , I can't understand how your "bits" don't get washed in the shower , I prefer to hose down the drain all the stuff that comes off , (dead skin mud fluff ) down the drain rather than sit in as soup of soap and body particles

I would say showers are far more popular now rather than having a bath although bathing can be more relaxing. I find our bath too big and I get too hot so I prefer a shower.

I shower every morning and sometimes in evening if its hot and I’ve sweated (!) and we don’t have a bath but if I stay somewhere that does have a bath I do enjoy a wallow but rinse off afterwards.

Bath every day, hate showers, as I don't feel clean, the water can't get everywhere if you know what I mean ladies. Also it's just so relaxing, especially in winter after work, pjs on and a nice relaxing evening in front of the TV with gransnet as well of course.

I shower every morning and would only shower again if I got really hot and sweaty. DH and DS love to take long baths in the evening, usually every other day.
My body has got used to a daily shower and I feel yuk if I don't have one before dressing.

Ooh, M0nica I think I might go and have a relaxing bath right now. smile

We moved here a year ago and don't have a bath. I thought I would miss it but I don't. However I don't shower every day, my skin is dry enough as it is. I have a good wash if I don't shower and no-one has told me I smell! I'm amazed people have two showers a day. The country is running out of water!

I shower every day. I usually only have a bath occasionally in the winter if I’m cold. The grandchildren use my bath more than me

To answer the OP's question - I would say that showering is much more common than bathing in the UK nowadays. DH and I shower daily but we both do like a bath for relaxing - especially in the winter, but that is a luxury now that we are retired. When we were working and had a young family we never had time to luxuriate in a bath.

Both DH and I are bathers, not showerers,

Bathing is an entirely different experience to showering. Showering is entirely utilitarian. It's purpose is to get you clean and on your way. I find it unrelaxing and inconvenient because I never feel it has really cleansed all those hidden away parts like ears and genitals and has to be followed up by extra washing at a washbasin. Also I keep those areas free of soaps and shower jells and the like because of allergy problems, and that is almost impossible to do in a shower.

Bathing is about relaxing, lying down in warm water and quite literally letting it wash over you, while you unwind and relax. This was an absolute necessity when I worked and a luxury now I am retired. My compromise is I only bath every other day, unless I get particularly dirty or sweaty, when I will add a quick shower to my washing routine. I think our obsession with washing our bodies at every available opportunity is wasteful of water and probably not good for our skin flora. Even my nearest and dearest have never made any complaints about body odour, and DD assuredly would if there was a problem.

Always showers for DH & I. (In our new home we've had only showers installed.) Neither of us have had a bath in years; gravity would help us to get in - but it's not going to help us to get out!

I much prefer a bath, to relax. But I haven't had one for over a year since we moved here. We only have a shower room.
But it's just well as the last time I had a bath, before we moved, I passed out and fell, with a few bruises etc.
I still miss baths.

Desdemona Mon 05-Aug-19 17:18:47

I bath a couple of times a week - if I have time to fill the tub with bubbles and really relax, or if I feel stressed or ill. Also, I can only shave my legs sitting down in the bath!!

The other days I take showers for speed and convenience.

SueDonim Mon 05-Aug-19 17:11:52

We have both but I prefer a bath as does dh. I never feel properly clean after a shower, which just whisks a bit of water over your body. I've also been frozen/scalded too many times in showers - that happened last week in a hotel I stayed in! I hate all that temperature adjustment.

There's never any scum in my bath, maybe because we have very soft water. Also, I don't stand and watch the bath fill up, I turn on the water and then do tasks such as cleaning my teeth and putting away clean laundry. The bath is ready by the times I've done those. I live in Scotland, we have an abundance of water here so that's not a concern.

Funnily enough we’re just about to have our bath taken out and replaced with a walk in shower. DH does like a soak at night but it’s become too dangerous for both of us getting out so needs must and all that! End of an era ☹️

Mapleleaf Mon 05-Aug-19 16:58:37

Most of the time, it's the shower. However, if I'm chilled through or feeling achey, then a soak in the bath is great. I seem to sleep more soundly after a bath, too, but that may just be psychological! ?

Willow500 Mon 05-Aug-19 16:56:37

Very occasionally I will have a bath especially in the winter but use the shower every day - can't wash my hair in the bath. Husband showers first thing on a morning - don't think he's had a bath in years as he would struggle to get out.

Grandad1943 Mon 05-Aug-19 16:52:13

We have both a Shower room and separate bathroom. I have not used the bath in the 43 years we have lived in this house. My wife also normally takes a shower, but will "now and again" have a bath.

I believe (but I could be wrong) that taking a bath is more of a women thing, whereas men, in the main, always have a shower.

Nannyxthree Mon 05-Aug-19 16:41:59

OH and I both shower now but I would like the luxury of a soak every now and again if it wasn't such a struggle to get out .

GC love the bath.

Minniemoo Mon 05-Aug-19 15:58:34

I love my bath. Suffering with chronic pain makes it almost a necessity. Epsom salts and a good book. I can lie in there and almost feel normal again.

We do have 2 showers as well which I will use but I have a bath every day.

dragonfly46 Mon 05-Aug-19 15:54:56

I shower every morning and use the bath occasionally.

shysal Mon 05-Aug-19 15:52:55

I dread the day when I won't be able to get in and out of the bath. I have RA and a soak every morning loosens me up for the day. I wake very early (before 5am) so I spend about an hour reading there to pass the time before my usual walk to get rid of any remaining stiffness. A bath is one of the joys of retirement, I always showered when working.

SalsaQueen Mon 05-Aug-19 15:50:46

I have a shower every morning, and again in the evening, and so does my husband. We've also got a bath, but don't use it more than once a fortnight or so.

tanith Mon 05-Aug-19 15:45:14

I don’t have a bath anymore just a lovely big walk-in shower which I use every day I don’t enjoy a bath and can’t remember when I last had one.

maddyone Mon 05-Aug-19 15:26:41

I use bath and/or shower, we have both. I enjoy a shower with some nice shower gel, but equally enjoy a hot bath (especially in winter) with lovely bubble bath. Like Day6 , my bath water isn’t mucky, I shower or bathe every day, usually before bed. I love getting into my lovely, comfortable bed with crisp cotton sheets, when I’m nice and clean. I don’t like the idea of getting into bed with the day’s dirt on me, even if it isn’t very much dirt.
