White walls in homes

Pale colours look great. But pure white can show shadows more than other pale shades. However if you just use white then it's easy to touch up when needed. Make sure you get a good paint. White looks modern and clean if kept fresh. Hang some nice pictures and put in some good lighting - wow!

I live in a small two up two down, all walls painted white, apart from feature wall in dining room and bedroom. I love white walls, so easy to add colour with rugs, throws etc., and very easy to touch up?

Can look cold if the room gets no sunlight or the lighting is harsh. I agree it often looks very good and clean.
A strong colour on at least one wall is now starting to be the trend. DS has done one large wall a deep teal blue and DGD has done a room with lots of windows a deep grey - both look stunning.

Never even thought about shadows HettyMaud , haven’t attempted it yet, but certainly considering it

Love, love, love this. I fell into it accidentally in a house I lived in temporarily many years ago. Beautiful, clean cut lines.

Every home I've had since then has been white. I love the sculptural way the edges and shadows are created. Took me 6 years to put art up because I loved my blank walls so much in my current house.

I had white walls everywhere in my last home. I didn't realise that OH wasn't completely au fait with it until we moved and I wanted the same here. We compromised ?
I like pale walls as I'm big on bold pictures, mirrors and carpets on walls. I also have a big collection of masks from around the world.

I’m not keen on brilliant white everywhere, but a very slightly off-white on walls, with white-white on ceilings and any coving, IMO looks lovely, still very light.
I’ve done Dulux Timeless on walls, with brilliant white on ceiling and coving, it worked very well.

I love this look and would really like it in my own home.
Sadly it isn’t going to happen for many reasons.
I would like a small new build which I could start again with everything new.
This is a pipe dream.

You need either perfect plastering OR ELSE completely rustic irregular walls, and then white looks amazing.

It is very unforgiving on imperfect walls (unless theyre cottagey, supposed to be imperfect walls)

To be honest when I first heard of it going back several years my first reaction was, Oh no not for me too clinical, hospital Drs surgery, but when I saw it, I completely changed my mind and thought Oh wow this looks amazing

We’ve just redecorated our hall and also our kitchen white, what a difference it looks beautiful, so bright and clean.

We’ll shortly have a mid grey carpet laid in the hall, the hall stand is also white.

I PLASTERED the walls in my house before painting the whole place white. It looked stunning while it was empty.

Hate white walls, except in very limited circumstances, one room in a house is fine but wide spread use of white looks cold and institutional and makes the house look dull and unimaginative.

Our current house, an old farm house, was painted white everywhere when we bought it and within a month even DH was asking where to start the decorating to get rid of some of the white.

I am not overkeen of lots of very dark or strong colours either, but a subtle use of colour to define each room and its mood is essential for me.

For me its the othet way round.
All white looks like a design choice to let the archetecture/features speak for themselves
One white room just looks like that room is unfinished

I can't imagine having white walls in my Edwardian house - I just think it would look wrong. Having said that I have a daughter who's an interior designer and I'm planning to let her have her way with my dining room soon. I don't think she would want white....gulp!

White is lovely in small rooms, especially in a cottage. There are some lovely shades of off white which is much nicer than brilliant white.

I like pictures on a large white wall and often paint the frames to make them stand out. White walls also give you plenty of choice when it comes to soft furnishings.

White everywhere except family bathroom, which is calico atm.

We had calico throughout, but found that room by room we preferred white.
To us it is light and airey and I can ring the changes by changing soft furnishings, rugs lamps, shades etc.

I agree with merlot pictures and paintings do seem stand out well on a white back drop.

Our kitchen has also white units and walls.
However the blind and accessories are bright orange.

We have original framed modern art on one kitchen wall all in primary colours, curtesy of our three little grandsons.
It is a sunny happy room.

We have chalk white paint on the rooms in our small apartment. It helps open it out a bit and reflects the light well.

When we moved to our second home after marriage, in 1977, all the walls in that house were white. Loved it and we kept it that way for years.

It's come around again. It seems in the early 80's everyone had off-white walls. It somehow seems too safe and sterile for me; i like a bit of colour.

I subscribe to a home decor magazine, and was getting a bit annoyed the last few years since every single article showcased white walls. Thought they should rename the magazine The White House. I understand decor trends, but they are not for everyone.

I am a lover of colour, our old farmhouse sill has open fires we don't often use the central heating system. White would not stay pristine for long, with three soon to be four dogs who wait until they get indoors to shake mud up the walls and wellies and muddy jackets everywhere everything has to be washable, white would not be white for long. I have friends with lovely white rooms and cream carpets which look amazing. We have wooden floors except in bedrooms and could give dulux a run for their money on washable paint.

I am another lover of white ( or near white) walls. I find it means I can change colour schemes in rooms just by changing curtains cushions etc which is much cheaper than an overhaul of of walls and other things. I have a colour called white blosom on my sitting room, the old standby magnolia on my dining room and timeless in the bedrooms.

Yes love it, we’ve had it for the last twenty years. Moved house now and gone with a soft light grey all over, looks good in the lounge and staircase, but wish I’d had white for the bedrooms, they look a bit cold and gloomy.

White walls to me are cold, unimaginative and a very common choice. I like to feel every room in a home has a unique character and is coloured to suit the mood. Somehow a white interior house feels like an igloo

Magnolia all through here, open plan, but thinking of trying White with maybe some contrast somewhere.
