Why didn't my mother warn me?

We get lots of advice from our mother's but mine forgot to tell me about how dirty cutlery drawers get. I just don't understand it. The only things that I put in are clean, straight from the dishwasher and I only open it to take cutlery out or put clean in. Why does it get so dirty?

Yes you can tell how bad this self-isolating is getting when I'm cleaning the kitchen cupboards and drawers. grin

Thanks for the sugar soap mention. My oven is cleaned fairly often but could do with a thorough going over and the firm I contacted wanted £75.
Our cutlery drawer and those underneath it are currently spotless because DH accidentally knocked a milk carton over when the drawer was ajar. We spent all evening washing the contents and the tray, drying the drawer then cleaning with wipes, then discovered that the milk had managed to get into the other drawers (fortunately not the man drawer!) so they were cleaned out as well. I never realised I had 17 teatowels.

When OH butters toast or makes the sandwiches he often leaves the drawer open and gets irritated when I push it to. No wonder it gets crumbs in.

Yes, cutlery drawer and draining racks Are a mystery. And what about the draining ‘pot’ for cutlery - that get really yucky. How many germs are harboured there?

This is so very puzzling!! Thank goodness it doesn’t happen only to me!!!

I havegot one of these new fangled kitchen draws thats under my built in hobrather than the work surface, its a full metre wide, has more slots than l will ever need for holding cutlery and kitchen knives in, ut the best bit is that its got a silicone type seal along the top to keep out any dust or dirt from the cooker hob, and the lining lifts out for washing up in the sink if needsbe.
My old kitchen had the cutlery draw right under the bread bin and chopping board and was a nightmare for collecting all manor of food debris from above!

The goddess Anoya visited my kitchen this morning.
I was just holding in one hand a precious decorative plate of Poole pottery, inherited from my mother, in order to put it away, when a very large antique plate, inherited from my ex mother in law, slid down from being leant against the back wall of the kitchen cupboard, knocked out a Pyrex dish onto my mother's plate in my hand, and carved a nice chip out of the edge! Couldn't make it up! Hope it can be glued to look perfect again.

My query is how do the lens on my glasses get so dirty i do not touch the glass when putting on or off but they always get smeared

longpinknails Fri 10-Apr-20 10:32:09

My husband doesn’t shut drawers completely either...it must be a thing! It drives me mad....and yes, crumbs fall into the cutlery drawer because of this. I am always closing them in front of him and i give him ‘the look’ as he knows he’s done it again. I give up.

Same here Springychicken, ,my 2 sons (yes they do live with me,i dont know why we have to put this nowadays, gagajo, but we do,or someone says" i hope they live with you".grin) they do the same, leave drawers and cupboards open everytime they go in for something-must be a bloke thing!! Its blooming annoying though.theres often something hanging/sticking out of the drawers too! The cutlery one is the only one they close! And no i don't bake above cutlery drawer either...but theres always the bits.?

Athenia,im afraid id be tempted to put the MiL's plate in a box to donate when 'the virus' has disappeared....grin

Nannan2 Fri 10-Apr-20 10:51:10

I sympathise Mollygo, milk gets everywhere,i leaned slightly with a bowl of cereal in hand yesterday,& some sloshed out, went everywhere,on floor,on some drawers, splashed near tv unit(id taken it in living room, leaned over to switch tv on,at plug socket.) It was only a tiny splosh, but it seeped a fair way! Id to rush to grab tissues before it ruined anything.then follow up with wipes.

Wow! So not just my hubby who cannot close cupboard doors after opening....and will leave fridge door open whilst he makes a sandwich ‘well! Im putting this back in there, in a minute..’

And strands of spaghetti which are now carefully hoarded ? My Mil used to say how wasteful I was with food sometimes. I wish she could see me now.

I am not even going to look at mine then I won't know how grubby it is so can ignore.

Nannan2 Fri 10-Apr-20 11:04:06

Haha,no thats not why Leah50,in our house IM the one who was put in a drawer as a baby,(i was so small, but not early,at 4lbs,and midwife put me in drawer, nearer to heat,to keep me warmsmile) -my sons were prem, but were in incubators,so no drawers for them)! But i see on here a lot of the blokes do same thing! Definitely a man-thing i think. No idea why though.hmm My elder son cleared out the 'tat' or 'man' drawer once- but it ended up same,he's never done it ever again!

Nannan2 Fri 10-Apr-20 11:08:35

?my sons do that as well Monkeebeat, with the fridge! Ive a freezer beeps when they leave it open so they cant get away with it,but i used to have a fridge with alarm too,but not anymore...i miss that fridge...smile

Mischief. In reference to being confined to Barracks that I am experiencing, I caught myself the other day cleaning the kitchen sink taps with a (ex) toothbrush. Something regularly done. no doubt, by you hygiene conscious people. But not me who can scarcely lift a cleaning rag. Cleaning is not something I do except if I am expecting visitors. (I have some standards)

TashHag Fri 10-Apr-20 11:14:24

So funny, only just seen thread but guess what I did yesterday afternoon? Cleaned my kitchen drawers out. No fluff at the back or stray crumbs at the front.

I keep opening them now, just to have a look smile

ReadyMeals Fri 10-Apr-20 11:15:17

The drawer is usually right under where you do food prep - the crumbs fall in if you open the drawer before cleaning the worktop - or even after if you didn't notice crumbs dangling under the edge where the cloth pushed them

TashHag Fri 10-Apr-20 11:15:59

... I meant no fluff or crumbs NOW. There were plenty before blush

TashHag Fri 10-Apr-20 11:17:53

I know, it’s funny isn’t it. I suppose dust and crumbs are everywhere and there are always gaps they can get through, including the ones you can’t even see

Nannan2 Fri 10-Apr-20 11:20:27

?i had my granddaughter over to stay a few days, years ago (she's now 21) and said,at end of day,to her,& my 2 youngest sons(they're now 21& very nearly 17) "come on lets clean up now" and she said "why, who's coming?"i think that speaks volumes of her mums cleaning when she was littlegrin

Atqui Fri 10-Apr-20 11:23:17

Atqui Fri 10-Apr-20 11:23:51
