Why didn't my mother warn me?

We get lots of advice from our mother's but mine forgot to tell me about how dirty cutlery drawers get. I just don't understand it. The only things that I put in are clean, straight from the dishwasher and I only open it to take cutlery out or put clean in. Why does it get so dirty?

Yes you can tell how bad this self-isolating is getting when I'm cleaning the kitchen cupboards and drawers. grin

This is topical, I had a rush of blood to the head yesterday & not only cleaned cutlery drawer but also set to work on the tea stained teaspoons!

Mess in the cutlery drawer is a complete mystery to me to. Also, can anyone give me hints on how to keep the pan rest on the hob clean. It seems to be covered in "plastic" and is a nightmare to clean. Have been told never put in dishwasher. Been used to cast iron pan rest and this new fangled stuff is driving me mad! Kitchen shop folk look at me as if I am speaking alien when I ask them.

Thank you, it gave me a jolly good laugh. Best advice given to me by my LMIL on discovering me having a domestic demon surge: "you know you are going to kill yourself, and for what, because the dirt your sweeping-up will be the same dirt someone else will be sweeping-up after you have". Wise woman!

Where do you buy sugar soap?

Starblaze Fri 10-Apr-20 12:24:24

There isn't a kitchen gadget for unsticking drawers that get jamed shut by kitchen gadgets. That's what I don't understand.

I watched a Channel 4 programme last night about cleaning your house and the coronavirus. They were showing two homes and how to clean them. Where on earth do they get these people, their homes were IMMACULATE, SPOTLESS, UNBELIEVABLE!!!! And are these homes supposed to be
typical, I don't think so, oh for a kitchen like theirs instead of my mucky one!

Elderflower2, we used to buy from places like b&q but as supermarkets now sell paint and so on you might be able to get it there.

Chewbacca in our house that is known as ' THE drawer' - witht the emphasis on 'THE'; and it holds everything that we don't know what to do with. Unfortunately it has of late expanded into 'THE drawers'. Something needs to be done.

Love this thread, this is one of life's little mysteries that has never ceased to confound me, likewise the draining rack at kitchen sink, we always rinse our washing up so it can't even be residue from washing up water that makes that dirty, the cutlery drainer is the worst thing, so difficult to clean too.

I know none of those jobs will be getting done at moment, I'm banned from downstairs of house, is cos I have long term illnesses and my DH wants to keep me as safe as possible, it's a tad frustrating but it's good to feel treasured. If he gets ill I'll need to access rooms and disinfect things before I can even make a cup of tea but by staying home hopefully we'll both stay safe and he can continue to look after me in the easy he wants to. I'll need to mention cleaning the draining rack etc to him, I know they'll not have been done for over 3weeks now, eurgh. ?

I attributed it to the fact that the cutlery drawer here is directly under my work top, but I see it happens even if the drawer is somewhere else.

I've managed to get rid of the Sock Goblin by counting the socks as they go into the washing-machine and when I take them out. It may only work with Danish Sock Goblins, but you are welcome to try the remedy.

I watched that too Maggieanne, I felt like I needed a lie down just having watched it! Does anyone really do all that cleaning?! Obviously if you have someone with the dreaded ‘you know what’ in the house extra measures are needed but as for the rest of it!! Exhausting!

Hair cut
My DH has offerred to cut my hair today. I know he loves me and I don't think he'd do anything unruly or daft but really?
Would you let yours?

granbabies123 Fri 10-Apr-20 13:04:48

Sorry weong place

PamGeo Fri 10-Apr-20 13:06:10

I'd love to know how the inside rubber rim of the washing machine gets so disgusting ?
The amount of water sloshing around regardless of the temperature should keep it clean surely ? yuk !

timetogo2016 Fri 10-Apr-20 13:07:24

Mine is the same too and i too have a husband that does`nt shut it fully.
He aslo has the nack of not putting lids and bottle tops back on properly.
AHHHH.

Cid24 Fri 10-Apr-20 13:49:48

We keep our trays on a shelf stacked sideways. They go in clean , why then , do crumbs gather? The shelf as above head height! ???

M0nica Fri 10-Apr-20 13:59:32

But my cutlery drawer is in a dresser in the breakfast table end of the kitchen and is no where near any worktop and I have the same problem.

Elliane. Talking of baguettes, I remember seeing a cage at the zoo with two inside. The keeper told me that they were bred in captivity!

Purplepoppies Fri 10-Apr-20 14:33:57

I have a kitchen with no drawers!
I have no idea who would design a kitchen with no drawers ??‍♀️.
Its rented. Nothing I can do about it.

re Man v Drawers 'n cupboards. Male friend, single, is unable to close either. He went on holiday with neighbour promising to "keep an eye" on his house. I got a panic call from said neighbour saying she thought there had been a break-in at friend's house as when she looked through the window all the drawers had been pulled out and all the cupboards were open. Hard to re-assure her that this was normal.

Txquiltz Fri 10-Apr-20 16:35:47

While cupboard cleaning and organizing, I realized it was time for new dinnerware. Why does that mean I have to receive 6-8 cups? We love cups given to us by the GC saying things like, "Worlds' Best Nana". Storing extra cups just starts the clutter cycle again. Maybe cups should be add-ons for those that want them

Jennyluck Fri 10-Apr-20 17:21:48

My mystery is the washing machine drawer, it only has clean water going through it . So how does it get black and so hard to clean ?????

TwinLolly Fri 10-Apr-20 20:09:17

Mum always had a spring clean of her kitchen cupboards every 6 months. It puts me to shame, more so if I get to.doing my own once a year or every 2 years...
