Woodwork - Satin or gloss?

We use satinwood and always very happy with it.

If you are painting over gloss why not look at an oil based eggshell? We have this in our hallway and it's been pretty durable without the stark shine of a gloss.

Re eggshell... We have water-based eggshell in the kitchen and it's not as durable by the way.

Also, I'm not sure you can over-paint an oil based paint with a water based one if you want it to stick. You may need to remove the gloss first, rough it up significantly, or maybe use a coat of something specialised in between?
You maybe should check this out.

Satin, we don’t like shiny

I have painted waterbase satin finish over white oil -based gloss without any problem at all. If it gets marked or stained and it will not wipe off, i just lick another coat of paint over the mark.

Mind you I am bone idle, I always look for the quickest easiest way of doing anything and only when that fails do I do start reading and starting to follow the rules.

Satin finish all day long.

Used satinwood for years, still like it, but have recently gone back to gloss, I love it in really dark colours, all shiny and sleek.

Satin.

Egg shell if you don’t want a glossy finish. However, you need to rub down with fine sand paper if you intend to use a water based (acrylic) paint. However, We had to paint over oil painted fitted wardrobes but found a primer that was a bit more expensive than normal primer but was able to cover any surface. It was great, so easy and provided a really good surface. Dh has just found it. It is called ZINSSER Cover Stain. It says on the tin “works on all surfaces without sanding”.

I love gloss and only ever use Dulux Once. Find it reflects light everywhere and that pleases me. Confess it does go cream in time but then I just add another coat as and where it is annoying me.

I do small paint jobs but we got a firm to do main hall landing etc. They recommended satin as gloss is not fashionable now. The results were lovely I won't use gloss again.

Satinwood for me. Mine has stayed white, has a slight sheen and cleans well with a damp cloth.

Satin finish every time. Gloss is soooo dated yuk !

Satin wood. Dulux Timeless. Never goes off colour.

We had a decorator in a few weeks ago to do all the paintwork and ceilings in the house we were moving into - he recommended satinwood which he's used throughout over the gloss - it looks very nice.

Personally use eggshell matt, very hard wearing and doesn’t go yellow like gloss. Find satinwood chips easily

Lin52 Can I ask the make of eggshell mat you used?

I know someone who alternates, she does like decorating and does it regularly, so that she can see where she has re-painted ?

I use water based satin. No problem keeping it clean. Washing out the brushes is SO much easier.
