Woodwork - Satin or gloss?

I have found a few old threads about satin or gloss (from 2014) but was wondering if there was any more up to date info.

I need to paint the woodwork my hallway and stairs. This involves 9 doors plus door frames and skirtings, so it's a big job.

It is currently gloss white. It was done about ten years ago and is looking really yellow in some parts as it was oil based paint

At the moment I can't decide between satin or gloss. I have always used gloss in the past.

The gloss is too glossy and the satin looks a bit like undercoat to me as it is too matt. I sound like Goldilocks!

In the older threads the comments were that the water based satin was hard to clean and not hard wearing.

On the other hand, is gloss a bit old fashioned?

Is there a water based gloss that won't yellow but will be hard wearing and a bit less glossy, because it isn't oil based!

I usually use Dulux trade paint - though I am only a diy-er.

Any advice or specific recommendations for good paint would be welcome.

Satin for me. Today's formulas are much easier to clean and more hardwearing than they were in the past. They still reflect light but are much more modern-looking than gloss.

I think gloss is more hard wearing, and easier to clean (with a duster).

Satin looks nicer, but takes abit more cleaning ( on your knees with some spray and a damp cloth). I don’t know why this is .

Being the age I am, it’s easier to do the job of dusting with the ‘Shark’ attachment, and not kneeling down.

Although gloss is tough it chips easily. I prefer egg shell.

We have satin at present, but have to say it does chip and scratch much easier than gloss.

Satin finish for us, can’t stand gloss

I use water based satin. No problem keeping it clean. Washing out the brushes is SO much easier.

I know someone who alternates, she does like decorating and does it regularly, so that she can see where she has re-painted ?

Lin52 Can I ask the make of eggshell mat you used?

Lin52 Sun 02-May-21 16:15:19

Personally use eggshell matt, very hard wearing and doesn’t go yellow like gloss. Find satinwood chips easily

We had a decorator in a few weeks ago to do all the paintwork and ceilings in the house we were moving into - he recommended satinwood which he's used throughout over the gloss - it looks very nice.

Satin wood. Dulux Timeless. Never goes off colour.

Satin finish every time. Gloss is soooo dated yuk !

Satinwood for me. Mine has stayed white, has a slight sheen and cleans well with a damp cloth.

I do small paint jobs but we got a firm to do main hall landing etc. They recommended satin as gloss is not fashionable now. The results were lovely I won't use gloss again.

I love gloss and only ever use Dulux Once. Find it reflects light everywhere and that pleases me. Confess it does go cream in time but then I just add another coat as and where it is annoying me.

Egg shell if you don’t want a glossy finish. However, you need to rub down with fine sand paper if you intend to use a water based (acrylic) paint. However, We had to paint over oil painted fitted wardrobes but found a primer that was a bit more expensive than normal primer but was able to cover any surface. It was great, so easy and provided a really good surface. Dh has just found it. It is called ZINSSER Cover Stain. It says on the tin “works on all surfaces without sanding”.

Used satinwood for years, still like it, but have recently gone back to gloss, I love it in really dark colours, all shiny and sleek.

Satin ?

Polarbear2 Wed 28-Apr-21 17:29:38

Satin here?

tanith Wed 28-Apr-21 17:23:09

Satin finish all day long.

I have painted waterbase satin finish over white oil -based gloss without any problem at all. If it gets marked or stained and it will not wipe off, i just lick another coat of paint over the mark.

Mind you I am bone idle, I always look for the quickest easiest way of doing anything and only when that fails do I do start reading and starting to follow the rules.
